MANILA, Philippines – Governments in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, as well as South Korea, China, and Japan, should support economic sectors that are vulnerable to American trade policy and geopolitical tensions. This support is crucial to bolster the region’s resilience amid heightened uncertainties.
This recommendation comes from the Singapore-based ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), which today released a new report emphasizing the need for strategic economic measures in the face of evolving global trade dynamics and geopolitical challenges.

In a significant development for the National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir, four independent MLAs extended their support to Omar Abdullah’s party on Thursday. This has enabled the NC to reach the majority mark in the 90-member assembly without requiring support from the Congress party.
With this added support, the NC now commands the backing of 46 lawmakers, surpassing the majority threshold. Consequently, Omar Abdullah no longer needs Congress’s support to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir.
### Omar Abdullah Elected Leader of the Legislature Party
Omar Abdullah is set to be the new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after being unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party. The decision was taken during a meeting held at the NC headquarters located in the ‘Nawa-e-Subha’ complex in Srinagar on Thursday.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, JKNC Vice President Omar Abdullah announced,
“I have been elected as the leader of the Legislature Party. I express my gratitude to the MLAs. Talks are ongoing to obtain a letter of support from Congress. Four independent MLAs have also extended their support to the National Conference. Now the number of NC members stands at 42, plus the 4 independent MLAs. After receiving the letter from Congress, we will go to the Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form the government.”
The meeting was attended by NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah, Vice President Omar Abdullah, senior party leaders, and recently elected MLAs. Farooq Abdullah had already indicated immediately after the election results were announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) that Omar Abdullah would become the new Chief Minister of J&K.
### Priority to Restore Statehood
Omar Abdullah emphasized that the first task of the new J&K cabinet would be to pass a resolution demanding the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory.
“It should be the first business of the cabinet to pass a resolution asking the Centre to restore statehood to J&K. The Chief Minister should then travel to Delhi with the resolution and request the government to restore our statehood,” he said.
Abdullah added that this promise had been made by the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and other leaders.
“Nowhere did they state that statehood would be restored only to a government that includes BJP members,” he remarked.
The NC leader also reiterated that the party would never abandon its demand for the restoration of Article 370, which granted special autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir.
“Our stand on this will never change,” he asserted.
### Omar Abdullah’s Political Journey
This will be Omar Abdullah’s second term as Chief Minister. He was first elected in 2009 at the age of 38, becoming the Chief Minister of the J&K state. Now, he will assume office as the Chief Minister of the J&K Union Territory.
### Election Results Snapshot
The 98-member J&K Legislative Assembly results are as follows:
– National Conference (NC): 42 seats
– Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): 29 seats
– Congress: 6 seats
– Peoples Democratic Party (PDP): 3 seats
– Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]: 1 seat
– Peoples Conference: 1 seat
– Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): 1 seat
– Independents: 7 seats
Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor will nominate five members based on recommendations from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
With a clear majority, the National Conference is poised to form the government, with Omar Abdullah as the Chief Minister, focusing on promises such as the restoration of statehood and Article 370.

**Mumbai:** Nearly a month before the New York City mayoral elections, Indian-American politician Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic candidate, found himself at the center of a controversy following his visit to temples in the city.
Mamdani has faced criticism online after a picture surfaced showing him wearing shoes inside a temple. Interestingly, others in the same photo were barefoot. The image is reportedly from the Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam temple in New York City. Ahead of the mayoral polls, Mamdani visited two temples in the city as part of his campaign.
“I’m proud of my Hindu heritage, I’m proud to be someone who would be the first Muslim mayor of this city, and I’m proud to hold all of those things together,” Mamdani told NepYork, a New York-based news portal.
He added, “I am proud that I would be the first Indian-American mayor of this city. I am proud of the fact that my mother’s family is Hindu. And I grew up with a keen understanding, whilst myself being a Muslim, what Hinduism means. The stories that I learned, the tradition, the faith, the practices.”
### Netizens’ Reactions
The images sparked strong reactions on social media, with many criticizing Mamdani for wearing shoes inside the temple.
“Zohran Mamdani is not a Hindu. He may not have known that we do not wear shoes inside the temple. He clearly does not want to follow others who are with him and are not wearing shoes. It was the responsibility of this photo-op seeking group to demand he takes off his shoes and respects Hindu tradition and faith at least inside a temple,” wrote prominent columnist Sunanda Vashist.
Another user commented, “Comparing the group photo of Zohran Mamdani & others in Flushing temple with the below picture, one can easily understand that he was allowed to go deep inside the @nyganeshtemple with shoes. Neither the temple management seems to have appraised him of the Hindu temple customs, nor did he bother to ask and understand.”
However, some users pointed out that the location where Mamdani was standing was outside the temple proper. One X user noted, “You might not be a Hindu if you didn’t know that the dwaja stambha is outside of the temple.”
### Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani gained significant attention earlier this year after winning the Democratic mayoral primary, defeating veteran politician Andrew Cuomo.
Born in Uganda to Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran moved to New York at the age of seven. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and recently married a Syrian artist.
Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a housing counselor, assisting low-income families in fighting eviction. In 2020, he was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he identifies as a “democratic socialist.”
As the mayoral race approaches, all eyes remain on Mamdani and how he navigates both his campaign and cultural expectations.

**British PM Keir Starmer Begins Historic First Visit to India**
*New Delhi:* British Prime Minister Keir Starmer commenced his maiden visit to India on an unusual note. A video circulated showing Starmer aboard his British Airways flight from London to Mumbai, greeting passengers with the words: “This is the Prime Minister. I’m in the cockpit. This is the biggest trade mission to India that the UK has ever sent. I’m looking forward to working with you as we explore all the opportunities in our new free trade agreement.”
**PM Modi Welcomes Starmer**
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to welcome Starmer, calling it his “historic first visit to India.” Modi posted, “Looking forward to our meeting tomorrow for advancing our shared vision of a stronger, mutually prosperous future.”
**About the Visit**
Starmer is on a two-day visit to India accompanied by a 125-strong business delegation. His itinerary began in Mumbai, where he visited the iconic Yash Raj Film Studio and also participated in a football event.
Following these engagements, Starmer shifted focus to traditional diplomacy with a meeting planned with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This discussion aimed to prepare for talks with PM Modi, where both leaders will review progress in various aspects of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership aligned with ‘Vision 2035’.
Trade is the main focus of this visit. Starmer and his delegation intend to explore opportunities presented by the recently signed India-UK free trade agreement. This agreement aims to double bilateral trade between the two nations to nearly $100 billion by 2030.
**Trade Agreement Under Scrutiny**
Despite the optimism surrounding the trade agreement, it is still subject to parliamentary scrutiny in the UK. The House of Lords International Agreements Committee launched an inquiry on September 10 to examine the potential benefits and risks of the deal, its implications for bilateral relations, and the wider geopolitical context.
Lord Goldsmith, chair of the committee, emphasized this holistic review, highlighting the importance of understanding the agreement’s impact on the UK-India relationship.
**India’s Perspective**
Indian Ambassador Ruchi Ghanashyam, former High Commissioner to the UK, expressed a cautiously optimistic view. She said the deal “provides an ambitious roadmap to deepen the economic and trade relationship in the medium and long term.” However, she noted some issues remain to be resolved.
“While we have yet to see easing of visa restrictions from the UK side, important agreements covering migration, mobility, and social security contributions for Indian workers in the UK are definitely steps in the right direction,” Ghanashyam stated. “There is logic to strengthening bilateral ties between India and the UK, and both governments recognize that.”
**Visa Issue: A Point of Friction**
The visa issue continues to be a sensitive topic in the India-UK relationship. During a press interaction in Mumbai, Starmer made it clear that visa discussions would not be part of his visit itinerary.
This was no surprise to Rahul RoyChaudhury, Senior Fellow for South and Central Asian Defence, Strategy and Diplomacy at the UK-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He explained, “Immigration has become a significant political issue in the UK, with a large anti-immigration rally having taken place recently in London.”
RoyChaudhury added, “This issue is expected to dominate the local elections next summer (2026) and the general elections in 2029, in which the Labour party faces potential losses to right-wing parties. As a result, there is a stiff crackdown on illegal immigration alongside prospective curtailments on legal migration to address anti-immigration sentiment.”
**Additional Engagements**
Starmer and Modi are also scheduled to participate in the CEO Forum and the Global Fintech Fest 2025 on Thursday, further strengthening business and technological collaborations between the two nations.
**Addressing Concerns on Sikh Extremism**
On concerns related to Sikh extremism, experts believe Starmer’s government has dispelled expectations from Sikh separatists that the Labour government would sympathize with their cause.
“There is now greater awareness within the British government about the detrimental impact of Sikh separatist groups in the UK, with a clear emphasis to prevent a situation similar to those seen in parts of Canada and the US,” said Roy Chaudhury.
Ambassador Ghanashyam reiterated that while both countries remain engaged on this sensitive subject, it should not be exaggerated. “Sikh separatists represent a small fraction and do not reflect the majority view of the Sikh community in the UK.”

**Ted Kennedy Refused to Let Troubled Wife Joan Join Alcoholics Anonymous to Protect His Political Career**
*Published Oct. 8, 2025, 4:30 p.m. ET*
RadarOnline.com can reveal that the late Senator Ted Kennedy refused to let his troubled wife, Joan Bennett Kennedy, join Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) out of fear over how it would reflect on him and his political career. Joan, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 8, at the age of 89, struggled with alcoholism exacerbated by the difficulties in her marriage.
Forced to endure her philandering husband Ted Kennedy’s relentless affairs and abuse, Joan’s drinking spiraled out of control. However, the Massachusetts senator forbade her from attending A.A. meetings, fearing that her story would damage his political reputation.
Joan’s alcoholism was a closely guarded secret within the Kennedy family — and Ted made sure it stayed that way.
“Almost everyone in the political community thought Ted had the perfect political wife, the envy of the capital,” recalled author Laurence Leamer, who wrote the explosive book *The Kennedy Women*. “But the Kennedys were desperately worried that Joan’s condition would become public knowledge.”
Leamer added that Joan begged to go to A.A., but Ted wouldn’t allow it. “The Senator — which is how Joan refers to him — wouldn’t let his wife get help, though she was in desperate need and pleaded for it, because he wouldn’t let anyone know she was an alcoholic,” he said. “The family was used to putting up a wall, constructing a sham, living a lie. It’s what they always did.”
### Joan Gives In to Her Addiction
Instead of allowing Joan to get help from A.A., Ted found a priest who was also a psychiatrist to treat her. This arrangement ensured confidentiality, as they could be doubly sure he wouldn’t disclose anything.
“I talked to him and all I do is wait until he left and go into my closet and get a bottle of vodka,” Joan once said about her treatment.
She admitted that her drinking worsened after Ted’s infamous accident at Chappaquiddick in 1969. “I just didn’t care anymore,” she said. “I just saw no future. That’s when I truly became an alcoholic.”
### Ted’s Fatal Car Crash Scandal
In July 1969, Ted Kennedy was involved in a fatal car accident when he drove his vehicle off a narrow bridge on Chappaquiddick Island into Poucha Pond after leaving a party with passenger Mary Jo Kopechne. Ted claimed he was dropping her off at the ferry.
While Ted managed to free himself and swim to safety, Kopechne was trapped in the car and tragically died. The prominent lawmaker insisted he attempted to rescue her.
Despite the damaging optics of the incident, Joan—who was pregnant after suffering two miscarriages—stood by her husband’s side when they attended Kopechne’s funeral and again three days later when Ted pled guilty to fleeing the scene of an accident.
### Drinking to ‘Numb the Pain’
In 1978, Joan confessed that she began drinking heavily to numb the pain of public scandals. She shared, “At times I drank to feel less inhibited, to relax at parties. Other times I drank to block out unhappiness, to drown my sorrows.”
Joan participated in a twelve-step program but candidly admitted, “Staying sober is difficult.” Her battle with sobriety was a rollercoaster. Over the years, she was arrested four times for driving under the influence—the first in 1974 and the last in 2000.
Following her final DUI arrest, Joan appointed a guardian and retreated from public life.
### Separation and Divorce
After years of scandal and heartbreak, Joan and Ted separated in 1978. However, they did not officially divorce until 1982.
Joan Bennett Kennedy’s life was marked by personal struggle amid the backdrop of a powerful political dynasty, revealing the painful challenges she faced behind the scenes.

**PM Narendra Modi’s Two-Day Mumbai Visit: Sharp Criticism of Congress, Inauguration of Major Projects, and Calls for Swadeshi**
During his two-day visit to Mumbai on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, alleging that its “weakness strengthened terrorism.” He claimed that the Congress-led UPA government had restrained India’s defence forces from retaliating against Pakistan after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, acting under foreign pressure.
### PM Demands Answers on 26/11 Response
Modi demanded accountability, saying, “The Congress must reveal who in their party acted under pressure from another country and played with the emotions of Mumbaikars.” He emphasized that Mumbai, the country’s financial and most vibrant capital, became a target of terrorism in 2008.
Referring to former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s interview, the Prime Minister alleged that the Congress government denied the armed forces permission to carry out a counteroffensive on Pakistan despite being fully prepared.
“This weakness of Congress strengthened terrorism and compromised national security. The country paid the price with the loss of precious lives. For the BJP, nothing stands above the nation and its security,” Modi asserted.
### PM Inaugurates ₹31,850-Crore Projects in Mumbai
Arriving in Mumbai, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated multiple development projects worth ₹31,850 crore aimed at improving infrastructure and connectivity in the city.
He also criticized the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for halting work on the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line. Modi alleged that their decision caused “a loss of thousands of crores” and deprived Mumbaikars of crucial transport benefits.
“In a city where every minute counts, stopping the Metro for three to four years is no less than a sin,” he stated, accusing the coalition government of obstructing development for political gain.
### Calls for Swadeshi During Diwali
Speaking about economic progress, Modi highlighted record-breaking sales during Navratri following GST reforms. He appealed to citizens to buy Swadeshi goods during Diwali, stating, “If every Indian opts for Swadeshi, our money will stay within the country and generate employment for Indians.”
### Highlighting India’s Infrastructure and Aviation Growth
The Prime Minister underlined India’s rapid progress over the past 11 years, citing examples such as the introduction of Vande Bharat trains, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, new highways, and tunnels, which all represent the nation’s transformation.
He further added that the Vadhavan Port in Palghar will generate massive employment opportunities.
Modi also pointed out that the number of airports in India has more than doubled—from 74 in 2014 to over 160 in 2025. Indian airlines have ordered over 1,000 new aircraft, creating vast opportunities for pilots, engineers, cabin crew, and ground staff.
“India will become a global hub for Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) by the end of this decade,” the Prime Minister said, highlighting the country’s aviation aspirations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit focused on addressing past security failures, inaugurating significant infrastructure projects, and encouraging economic self-reliance through Swadeshi initiatives, underscoring his vision for a strong and prosperous India.
