Thompson scores first goal as Chelsea thrash Paris FC in Champions League

Club-record signing Alyssa Thompson opened her Chelsea account in a 4-0 thrashing of Paris FC as Sonia Bompastor’s side claimed their first Champions League win of the season.

Thompson, signed from NWSL’s Angel City for around £1 million on Deadline Day, was one of the bright sparks for Chelsea. The 20-year-old USA international helped the team respond to a disappointing draw at FC Twente in their opener with a dominant performance at Stamford Bridge.

Thompson set up Chelsea’s second goal with a precise cross for Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s looping header and scored the third at the back post, marking her first goal for the club and in the Champions League.

Sandy Baltimore had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after half an hour, following a VAR intervention that recommended an on-field review. The review revealed that Sjoeke Nusken’s foot was trodden on inside the box, awarding Chelsea the penalty.

Chelsea had struggled in front of goal up to that point, with Aggie Beever-Jones twice missing chances in the box. However, after the opener, the team relaxed and Rytting Kaneryd’s header doubled their lead six minutes before the break.

Thompson’s goal came just 90 seconds after the restart, as she poked in at the back post from Keira Walsh’s cross, effectively putting the game out of reach for the French side.

Chelsea’s fourth goal came from Erin Cuthbert following a corner, after a costly misjudgment by Paris FC goalkeeper Mylene Chavas led to a goalmouth scramble. There was some initial confusion when substitute Sam Kerr was credited with the goal, but replays showed her effort had been cleared off the line before the ball eventually went in off Cuthbert.

Chelsea shrugged off the setback of their opening-game draw and delivered a resounding win that moves them up to fourth place in the Champions League standings.

Battlefield 6 looks to have crossed 7 million units sold in a week

Just last week, Battlefield 6 kicked off a whole new generation of large-scale military FPS games, sparking a massive wave of excitement among fans. In fact, in just one week, the game has reportedly crossed 7 million units sold and grossed over $350 million, marking a significant short-term success for EA and Battlefield Studios.

The sales data comes from GamesIndustry.biz and its analytics partner, Alinea Analytics. According to their figures, Battlefield 6 reached 7 million copies sold across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It has performed better than every premium game launched this year, only falling short of EA Sports FC 26 in sales performance within a similar time frame.

This monumental first week for Battlefield 6 highlights the strong anticipation for the franchise’s top-tier action and combat experience. Popular modes like Conquest and Breakthrough have been enhanced, and the maps offer engaging opportunities for strategic gameplay.

Player engagement has also been impressive. Battlefield 6 hit a concurrent player peak of over 747,000 on Steam, according to SteamDB. While the numbers have since stabilized, the game still maintains a strong player base, consistently ranging between 300,000 and 500,000 concurrent players.

With these promising figures and positive reception, Battlefield 6 is poised to continue its successful run in the competitive FPS market.

ICC Women’s World Cup: Rain denies Pakistan victory over England

**ICC Women’s World Cup: Rain Denies Pakistan Victory Over England**

*By Rajdeep Saha | October 15, 2025, 10:23 pm*

Rain played spoilsport in Match 16 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. Pakistan looked dominant against England and appeared well set for a victory. However, the weather had the final say, with rain denying Pakistan a possible win.

England initially struggled, finding themselves at 79/7 after 25 overs before rain interrupted play. The match was then reduced to 31 overs per side. After resumption, England fought back to reach 133/9, recovering from 75/5 in the six overs they batted after the delay.

In response, Pakistan’s openers started strongly, scoring 34 runs without loss in 6.4 overs. Unfortunately for Pakistan, rain returned and forced the match to be called off, resulting in a no result.

### Match Highlights: England Manage 133/9 as Fatima Sana Shines with the Ball

England’s innings was marked by regular loss of wickets as Pakistan maintained pressure throughout. Charlie Dean was England’s top scorer with a resilient 33 runs. Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana was the standout performer with the ball, claiming an impressive four-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 4/27 from 6 overs. Sadia Iqbal also made an impact, taking 2/16 from her six overs, which included two maidens.

### Standings Update: England Top, Pakistan At The Bottom

Following this match, England remain at the top of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 standings. They are unbeaten after four matches, accumulating 7 points and boasting a superior net run rate (NRR) of +1.864, edging out Australia who are in second place.

On the other hand, Pakistan continue to struggle, sitting at the bottom of the table with just one point from three games (one no result and three losses).

Tamil land held by Sri Lankan security forces to be released for tourism development

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Ranasinghe, announced in Parliament on 7 October 2025 that all land currently held by Sri Lankan security forces in Trincomalee will soon be released for “tourism projects.” This announcement comes amid ongoing disputes over land rights in the Tamil homeland.

Trincomalee, a historically Tamil district, has been a key target of Sinhalisation for decades. Since the end of the armed conflict in 2009, the Sri Lankan government has facilitated land grabs, enforced state-sponsored demographic changes, and repeatedly failed to return occupied land to its rightful civilian owners.

Ranasinghe claimed that the release of land aims to boost tourist investment and promote regional development in Trincomalee. However, it remains unclear whether Tamils will be able to reclaim and return to land that is rightfully theirs.

Meanwhile, farmers in Muthunagar have been participating in a continuous satyagraha protest in front of the Trincomalee District Secretariat. They demand the return of farmlands seized for a state-supported solar power project. According to the farmers, 800 acres of agricultural land have been acquired for the project, and two local reservoirs have been filled in to accommodate its development—further endangering the region’s fragile water resources.

The protesters complain that, despite repeated promises from Sri Lankan authorities, their livelihoods remain threatened as corporate interests continue to take precedence.

In July 2025, Tamil residents of Trincomalee held a peaceful demonstration opposing the leasing of land to outsiders. The protesters carried placards and chanted slogans, demanding that land be returned to the local community. They also voiced their frustration over the ongoing injustice related to land rights in the region.

Further evidence of Trincomalee’s “Sinhalisation” surfaced during the 2025 budget debate earlier this year. Shanmugan Kugathasan, an Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) Member of Parliament, revealed that 3,820 acres of land had been taken over by Sinhala Buddhist monks under the guise of “Pooja Bhoomi.” This term refers to land seized for Buddhist religious use in the Tamil homeland and highlights a pattern of Buddhist temples being constructed on Tamil-owned land. These developments occur under the protection of military and police forces despite the minimal presence of a Buddhist population in the area.

The ongoing land disputes in Trincomalee reflect deep-rooted tensions and raise serious concerns about the future of the Tamil community’s connection to their ancestral lands.
