Lakers’ JJ Redick hopes Deandre Ayton will rejoin lineup by end of week

LOS ANGELES Lakers starting center Deandre Ayton was not available for Tuesday night’s home game against the Clippers, but the team hopes to have him back by the end of the week. Coach JJ Redick said during his pregame media availability that Ayton, who sat out Tuesday because of a right knee contusion, was experiencing swelling and had a bruise but that imaging on the knee came back “clean.” Ayton suffered the injury when he got hit in the knee during the first half of Sunday’s road win against the Utah Jazz. He sat out the second half because of the injury. “Don’t think it’s going to be a long-term thing,” Redick said. “Hopefully it’s a game-to-game thing, and he’s back at some point by the end of the week.” Tuesday was Ayton’s second missed game of the season. He’s averaging 15. 5 points on 69. 6% shooting and 8. 4 rebounds in 29. 2 minutes per game. “He’s a good player, double-double,” Clippers coach Ty Lue said. “He’s really gotten better defensively. Used to be a guy that we tried to attack him [when he was] in Phoenix, but he’s gotten better at that. “They’re a good team. He’s a big part of what they’re doing, but Jaxson Hayes has been playing great as well. And then they’re coming with Maxi Kleber or [Jarred] Vanderbilt. So they’ll be OK.” With Ayton sidelined, Hayes started against the Clippers alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, LeBron James and Rui Hachimura. After being in the second-half rotation on Sunday and impressing during his minutes, Kleber was in the Lakers’ first-half rotation against the Clippers. “He’s very valuable for the things he’s able to do on the court because he understands who he is and all of those things that he’s really good at are complementary to our best players,” Redick said. “The other thing that he brings every single day is that he’s the best teammate for all the guys. His spirit, whether he’s in the rotation, out of the rotation, in street clothes because he has an oblique injury, whatever it is, he’s the same guy every day. There’s a stability to him that’s really becoming increasingly hard to find in the NBA for players. There’s value in that.” TWO-WAY ADDITION The Lakers officially signed Drew Timme from their South Bay G League affiliate to a two-way contract on Tuesday morning. He’s produced at every level and looking forward to coaching him.” Timme was one of the South Bay players who had the opportunity to practice with James earlier in the month during his return-to-play process from sciatica. “It was pretty crazy, man,” Timme recalled. “I mean, that’s the G. O. A. T. [greatest of all time]. To be able to share the court with him, especially being a G League team, that’s so outside of the normal of anything. It was crazy. But I think it just shows how connected the two programs are, and it’s super cool. He came down, and that’s our job, was to help him get back, to get back into game speed. So we were just glad to help. And it was really cool to be able to hoop with him.” Timme added that he was able to learn from James during the practices. “Especially with this new role that I’ve had with South Bay, especially like being more of a ball handler and playing more on the perimeter and stuff, just how he was able to get to his spots,” he said. “He just looked like he was never sped up, the game’s in slow motion for him, and to see him, how he attacked different things, I was just kind of watching as a fan and a student, and it was cool.”.

In response to these tightening conditions, the Federal Reserve has reintroduced overnight repo operations, supplying nearly $30 billion in short-term liquidity as of October 31. This marks the first such intervention since 2019 and signals a shift away from passive balance sheet reduction toward direct market support aimed at easing funding stress.

The liquidity drain-related issues are also linked to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. To prepare for potential spending delays, the Treasury has issued additional debt, which has increased the TGA balance, effectively pulling dollars out of the market.

Bitcoin’s Price Reflects Tightening Dollar Liquidity

Bitcoin has shown sensitivity to shifts in dollar liquidity. Unlike technology stocks, which have remained relatively stable, Bitcoin has experienced a decline since mid-October. The report connects this drop to rising funding costs and reduced dollar flow in the markets.

Data indicates that reverse repurchase agreements—a tool banks use to access short-term cash—have climbed back to $50 billion, pointing to heightened demand for safe and liquid assets.

According to ET, monitoring changes in TGA and reverse repo balances provides more accurate real-time insights into liquidity conditions than simply tracking the size of the Fed’s balance sheet.

Reopening Could Restore Liquidity and Support Bitcoin

The report suggests that market conditions may improve once the U.S. government reopens. As the author notes, “Historically, when the Treasury hoards cash and liquidity tightens to extremes, a market reversal often follows.” Forecasts indicate a potential congressional deal by mid-November, which would likely lead the Treasury to resume spending, reduce the TGA balance, and put dollars back into the market.

This influx of liquidity could alleviate pressure on risk assets such as Bitcoin. The researcher further notes that Bitcoin may be entering the final stage of its current correction. Should liquidity improve alongside possible rate cuts, the market could begin a new upward phase.

Patriots Drake Maye faces tough test against Falcons

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Drake Maye hasn’t been afraid to throw the ball deep down the field during his NFL career. One of the Patriots’ second-year quarterback’s first memories as a pro comes from one of his initial practices last season, when he connected on a deep pass with receiver Kayshon Boutte that beat cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

“You just remember things of throwing deep throws, seeing him come up on the right side of it and it just makes you want to keep going back to it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Maye said.

In his sophomore season, Maye has leaned into that ability to chuck it long. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he has completed 13 of 17 passes (76.5%) that traveled 20 or more yards in the air, logging five touchdowns along the way.

This skill has helped the Patriots (6-2) win five straight games and take a step forward in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ latest return to New England. It’s come at the perfect time as the Patriots prepare to host the Atlanta Falcons (3-4) and the NFL’s top-rated passing defense this Sunday.

Through seven games, the Falcons are allowing only 149.1 passing yards per game. Notably, Maye has passed for at least 200 yards in every game this season.

“He’s way better than I want him to be,” Atlanta defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said of Maye. “He feels like a mini Josh Allen, a younger Josh Allen, in a lot of ways: his mobility, his arm, the way he can take the game over in both facets of the game. So, he’s going to be — he’s a problem.”

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel noted that Maye’s confidence in airing it out has steadily increased since the preseason, starting with the trust the coaching staff has in him.

“I think he stays patient. I don’t think he panics and launches it or throws it seven yards out of bounds, but I think there’s been a lot of improvement from training camp and seeing some of those passes,” Vrabel said. “I don’t think there were as many completed in the preseason as there were in the regular season. I’m glad we saved them for the regular season.”

### Good hands

One of the main recipients of Maye’s deep balls has been Kayshon Boutte. A 2023 sixth-round draft pick by New England, Boutte is tied for the league lead with seven receiving touchdowns that traveled 20 or more air yards since 2024, alongside Ja’Marr Chase. Other notable receivers like AJ Brown, Quentin Johnston, and DK Metcalf each have six over that period.

### Injury watch

A big storyline this week is the availability of Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and top receiver Drake London, both of whom missed last week’s 34-10 loss to Miami.

Penix was sidelined with a bone bruise on his left knee and was replaced in the lineup by Kirk Cousins. London was inactive with a hip injury. Both players were limited in the Falcons’ first practice of the week and are considered day-to-day according to Falcons coach Raheem Morris.

Morris expressed optimism about Penix being ready to play this week.

“Obviously, he feels better than he did last week,” Morris said. “He obviously feels better than he did every single day with it being a bone bruise. That stuff gets better every day, so I feel really good about him.”

New England is the only team in the NFL this season not to surrender 50 yards to an opposing running back through eight games. Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson is tied for fourth in the league, averaging 79 yards per game. That includes a season-high 170-yard performance during Atlanta’s Week 6 win over Buffalo.

“A Vrabel-coached team is always going to be great. They’re always going to play sound. They’re always going to play really fundamentally fast, and we’ve got to be ready and prepared for that,” Morris said.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Jones admitted that his priorities currently lie elsewhere, which has led to some neglect of the team’s roster. He stated, “There’s $100 billion present value with (natural) gas out there. That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”

Unsurprisingly, this comment frustrated many fans. However, Prescott sought to clarify Jones’s intentions when asked about the remarks during practice ahead of Monday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. He said:

“I would just say the guy has never really lied about who he is or what he’s trying to do. Maybe in those five minutes is what he was alluding to, and having a chance at a $100 billion opportunity I think you might take five minutes as well to answer a call. Hopefully that’s what he means.”
