West Loop community shocked after video shows man robbed at gunpoint, beaten in broad daylight
CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago’s West Loop community was left in shock after a brazen attack and armed robbery was caught on video this week. The video may be difficult to watch. The armed robbery happened in the middle of afternoon Thursday as people were out and about in the West Loop. Chicago police say they are still looking for the suspects. ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch “I watched the video like 10 times and I was just a lost for words,” Jars store manager Ashley Shannon said. Shannon says she was in the back working at the West Loop store during the crime. It wasn’t until later in the day she found out the attack happened right outside the shop. “I was in the back working with the mixer and the mixer is a little loud, so I didn’t really hear any commotion outside really,” Shannon said. “You know this is Chicago, and we know that things can happen anywhere, but it’s like literally at my doorstep.” The video has since gone viral. ABC7 has blurred the face of the victim to protect his identity. It shows two people robbing a man at gunpoint in broad daylight in the Fulton Market District in the West Loop. Chicago police confirmed they are investigating the attack as an armed robbery and battery. It happened around 4: 23 p. m. afternoon in the 200 block of North Peoria Street, near Lake Street. The video shows two people surrounding a man on the ground, and at one point one of them hits the victim in the face while pointing a gun. Chicago police said the robbers took the man’s belongings before driving off in an SUV. Police say the victim declined medical attention. It’s probably the most alarming thing about it.” Julie Darling is president of the West Loop Community Organization. She says the area has already seen an increased police presence and urges people to stay vigilant. “We do have heavy police presence here in Fulton Market, and it’s something that our organization has been fighting for a long time, and we finally received it last August, where we do have permanent patrol in the neighborhood,” Darling said. “Police can’t be every corner, unfortunately, but we do have a rapid response time now. I’m usually walking with a purpose so I’m usually moving pretty quick too,” Smith said. “But outside of that, you know, you just got to pray you don’t run into a situation like that.” Chicago police say area detectives are still investigating. Anyone with information has been asked to give police a call.

Investigations increasing into violent online 764 network targeting minors
CHICAGO (WLS) — The 764 network operates not only in the United States but all over the world using threats, blackmail, and perverse manipulation to groom children for violence and pain. Members force young people to perform depraved acts against themselves and others. “When we started seeing these reports concerning online enticement, but with extremely egregious sadistic elements our team immediately knew this was an outside of the norm and began tracking this trend specifically,” said Fallon McNulty. She is the executive director of the CyberTipline at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch McNulty says members of 764 start to groom their victims on seemingly innocuous platforms and blackmail them into producing sexually explicit material, harming themselves, or even other children. “Offenders are first making contact with children through online gaming platforms or through social media and then trying to move children to more private or encrypted messaging spaces,” McNulty told the I-Team. The more debased and violent the image or video a member is able to coerce a child to produce, the higher their standing in 764. “They’re striking up communication or chat in gaming, they are trying to seek what that child’s interests are, what that child’s vulnerabilities are, their personal information, and then they’re using that against the child,” warned McNulty. SEE ALSO | ’10 minutes of murder’: Why one family is speaking out about the online extremist network 764 The FBI is now comparing 764 actions to those of terrorist organizations. “Lots of commonalities with other types of terrorist activity,” said Javed Ali, an associate professor at the University of Michigan Ford School of Public Policy. Ali worked at the FBI and National Security Council during the Trump Administration. “All this activity that is just so reprehensible. What’s to say that they wouldn’t go to another level and try to commit an act of terrorism, even though it may not be part of the origin, origins, or the initial ideals of what the 764 network tries to do,” said Ali. But there are real challenges to dismantling a network that exists all over the world and primarily online. “How do you, either from a parenting side, or from a national security perspective, how do you get your arms around it? Because it is so vast, and it’s so unregulated for the most part,” Ali told the I-Team. $10K reward offered in deadly shooting at Little Village jewelry store caught on camera
Two Men Fatally Shot During Jewelry Store Robbery in Little Village
CHICAGO (WLS) — Cook County Crime Stoppers are offering a $10,000 cash reward following the fatal shooting of two men during a jewelry store robbery in Little Village.
The incident occurred around 5:49 p.m. on Saturday at a jewelry store located on the 3800-block of 26th Street, according to Chicago police.
An armed offender entered the business and stole property. After exiting the store, the suspect became involved in an altercation with two male victims, ages 63 and 25. The suspect then shot both men multiple times before fleeing southbound on Springfield Avenue in a white SUV, police said.
The victims were transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition but were later pronounced dead. Their identities have not yet been released.
In response, Cook County Crime Stoppers announced on Sunday a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest in this double homicide case.
Exclusive Surveillance Footage Released
A nearby business shared surveillance video exclusively with ABC7 Chicago. The footage shows a man wearing a Blackhawks hoodie and mask approaching the jewelry store around 5:45 p.m., shortly before the robbery and shooting.
Within approximately 30 seconds, the suspect can be seen running out of the store carrying merchandise, with two men chasing after him. The altercation continued in the middle of the street near oncoming traffic, close to the corner of Springfield Avenue.
The offender then pulled out a gun and shot both victims. Police confirmed that no other individuals were injured during the shooting.
Currently, no arrests have been made as Chicago police continue their investigation into the case.

Chicago Mayor Johnson stands firm on proposed city budget, corporate head tax plan
Some members of the Chicago City Council continue to label the proposed budget as “dead on arrival”—primarily because it includes a controversial corporate head tax. Despite opposition from at least half of the council, as well as pushback from Governor JB Pritzker, civic and business groups, Mayor Brandon Johnson remains steadfast and refuses to back down.
“It is deeply disturbing right now that we have leaders in this state that are prepared to defend millionaires and billionaires and not the people in Austin and not the people in Roseland. What is wrong with us?” Johnson said in a passionate statement.
In a fiery response to reporters, Johnson pointed to Tuesday’s Democratic victories in New York and other municipalities as evidence that people want his model of governing—one that he says stands up for working people. However, many alders argue that the head tax is a “job killer,” saying that opposing it is actually standing up for workers.
Alex Nitkin from the Illinois Answers Project joined ABC7 to discuss the budget’s implications. “I think you’re going to see companies across the city leave the city, leave the state,” said 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea.
Alderman Scott Waguespack (32nd Ward) added, “I’ve had this discussion with the mayor before. If you attack businesses in the way that he has over the last couple of years, you’re essentially setting yourself up for failure because you’re not bringing in the taxes you need to run city programs.”
Alders opposed to the head tax would like to see the mayor present more cuts and efficiencies in the budget before asking large companies—with over 100 full-time workers—to pay a $21-per-month, per-employee tax. They’re also calling on the mayor to implement more of the savings recommended in the Ernst & Young budget report commissioned by Johnson.
“It’s incredible to see somebody spend $3.2 million and then ignore the vast majority of those recommendations that would put us on the right path,” Waguespack said.
As the budget debate plays out, S&P Global Ratings has issued a warning about a possible credit downgrade for the city if financial concerns aren’t addressed.
“This budget is a very sound, balanced budget—65% of which is structural in nature,” Johnson said.
The mayor wants the City Council to vote on his budget before Thanksgiving. Observers predict a very close decision—if it comes to a tie, Johnson himself will cast the tiebreaking vote.

Rich Township employee back home after being stranded in Jamaica without life-saving medication
CHICAGO (WLS) — A Cook County official is set to be welcomed home in Chicago on Sunday after a life-threatening ordeal in Jamaica.
Trinette Britt-Johnson, chief of staff to Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan, spent days without her kidney transplant medication while Hurricane Melissa shut down airports. The hurricane made it impossible for her to receive the crucial medication she needed.
Cook County Commissioner Kisha McCaskill led a team to ensure Britt-Johnson’s medication was delivered and that she could return home safely.
On Sunday, Britt-Johnson will publicly thank the officials, medical teams, and community members who came together to help save her life.
