Limp Bizkit band members say bass player Sam Rivers has died

Sam Rivers, the bass player in the nu metal band Limp Bizkit, died on Saturday, according to social media posts by his bandmates. The band did not disclose where Rivers died or the circumstances but praised him as “pure magic” and “the soul in the sound.”

“From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced,” they wrote in a group Instagram post. “His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.”

Fred Durst, the band’s frontman, posted a video recalling how they met at a club in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, before going on to music stardom and performances around the globe.

“He really did have an impact on the world, and his music and his gift is the one that’s going to keep on giving,” Durst said. “I just love him so much.”

Rivers had spoken publicly about heavy drinking that had caused liver disease. He left the band in 2015 and received a liver transplant before reuniting with Limp Bizkit three years later.

Limp Bizkit has scheduled a tour of Central and South America beginning in Mexico City in late November.

With roots in Jacksonville, Florida, Limp Bizkit emerged in the late 1990s with a sound that melds alternative rock, heavy metal, and rap. Their off-the-wall sense of humor is reflected in the titles of their mega-selling 2000 album, *Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water*, and a single released last month, “Making Love to Morgan Wallen.”

Atlanta United fires coach Ronny Deila following 5-16-3 record in his only season

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta United coach Ronny Deila was fired Sunday, just one day after the conclusion of a disappointing 5-16-3 season. Deila’s dismissal came after only one year at the helm.

Atlanta United CEO and president Garth Lagerwey announced that a global search for a new head coach would begin immediately.

“It was evident that our standard of play was not met this season, and together with our senior leadership team, we have decided that it was in Atlanta United’s best interest to move the team in a different direction,” Lagerwey said in a statement released by the team.

“Ultimately, we owe our fans a much better on-field product and it is our unwavering commitment to provide that to this community as soon as possible,” he added.

Lagerwey also expressed his gratitude toward Deila, saying he “thanked him for his time and commitment to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The season concluded on Saturday night with a 1-1 draw against D.C. United. It was also the final appearance for longtime goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who announced his retirement earlier this week.

Deila was hired by Atlanta United on December 20, 2024, marking his return to Major League Soccer three years after leading New York City FC to the 2021 MLS Cup championship.

He was given a three-year contract to replace Rob Valentino, who had served as interim head coach following the firing of Gonzalo Pineda in June 2024.

Atlanta United enjoyed immediate success after entering MLS in 2017, making the playoffs in their inaugural season and winning the MLS Cup the following year while setting several league attendance records.

However, the club has not secured a trophy since the 2019 season, when it captured both the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup and made a run to the MLS Eastern Conference final.

Marchenko’s third-period goal lifts Blue Jackets to first home win, 3-2 over Lightning

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Kirill Marchenko scored early in the third period to rally the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Saturday night. The victory snapped a three-game skid and gave the Blue Jackets their first home win of the season.

Kent Johnson celebrated his 23rd birthday in style by scoring a goal, and Damon Severson also found the back of the net for Columbus. Goaltender Jet Greaves stopped 17 shots to earn his first win of the season.

Marchenko has been on fire, tallying five goals in as many games— the most to start a Blue Jackets season. He is currently riding a five-game point streak.

For Tampa Bay, Ryan McDonagh and Anthony Cirelli scored. The Lightning held a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period but have now dropped three consecutive games. Jonas Johansson made 28 saves in the loss.

The scoring got started with Johnson’s goal at 4:58 of the first period, putting Columbus ahead during a chippy frame that saw a combined 30 penalty minutes. McDonagh tied it at 12:42, before Cirelli gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead with 3:38 remaining in the period—just 16 seconds into a power play.

Columbus has struggled on the penalty kill, allowing goals on eight of 18 power plays this season, including three of five at home.

Severson evened the score at 13:59 of the second period. Then Marchenko’s early third-period goal at 1:15 sealed the win for the Blue Jackets.

US warns Hamas planning attack on Palestinian civilians in apparent violation of Gaza ceasefire

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The U.S. State Department announced on Saturday that it has received “credible reports” indicating that Hamas may violate the ceasefire by launching an attack on Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

If such an attack occurs, it “would constitute a direct and grave violation” of the agreement brokered by President Donald Trump aimed at ending the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, the statement said. No further details were disclosed regarding the potential attack.

“Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire,” the State Department added.

Earlier, President Trump warned on social media that “if Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them.” However, the U.S. president later clarified that he would not send American troops into Gaza despite his earlier threat.

“It’s not going to be us,” Trump told reporters. “We won’t have to. There are people very close, very nearby that will go in and they’ll do the trick very easily, but under our auspices.”

This shift in tone followed Trump’s initial nonchalant remarks about Hamas killings, during which he stated they had taken out “a couple of gangs that were very bad.”

ANGERS, France (AP) — The figure skating Grand Prix season kicked off with a surprise at the Grand Prix de France on Friday, as Ami Nakai took the lead in the women’s short program ahead of three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto.

Making her Grand Prix debut, former world junior bronze medalist Nakai landed the competition’s only triple axel jump right at the start of her program, helping her earn a score of 78.00 points. Fellow Japanese skater Sakamoto managed 76.20 points, placing her second.

Meanwhile, 2024 world silver medalist Isabeau Levito of the United States secured third place with a score of 73.37, setting the stage for an exciting free skate on Saturday.

In the pairs event, the battle for Grand Prix gold is shaping up between two sets of reigning world champions. Japan’s Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara, world champions in both 2023 and 2024, led the short program with a near-flawless performance set to a strings cover of “Paint It Black.” They scored 79.44 points.

Canada’s Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, the 2024 world champions, delivered an equally strong short program and earned 74.26 points, placing them second.

Two U.S. pairs are also in the mix: Katie McBeath and Daniil Parkman scored 63.31, while Audrey Shin and Balazs Nagy earned 61.79 points.

More damage found on Route 109 bridge, MassDOT hopes to reopen by end of weekend

SAUGUS, MASS. (WHDH) – Traffic troubles continue for drivers using the Route 107 bridge between Lynn and Saugus, as inspectors have uncovered more damage to the temporary structure.

Officials announced on Wednesday that the bridge would be closed until further notice after cracks were found in several deck panels. Further investigations on Thursday revealed additional concerns, leading to the decision that emergency repairs are needed before the bridge can safely reopen.

“Knowing the integrity of the bridge isn’t there, that’s the scary part, really,” said Gerson Argueta, owner of Ken’s Car Care Center located near the bridge. “Anyone coming into Lynn, Saugus, or Salem, this is the only route we have. Now with this closed, it’s causing a big jam here on this side.”

Officials indicated on Thursday that emergency repairs could take several more days. One driver told 7NEWS that their usual six-minute drive home took more than an hour due to all the detours.

MassDOT stated that their goal is to have the bridge back open to traffic by the end of the weekend.
