Column: Eaton fire disaster response was an outpouring of love to pets

I vividly remember the evening of January 7, 2025. We had closed the shelter early as warnings of life-threatening winds intensified and the Palisades fire began to burn. In my role as Chief Programs & Services Officer, I stayed behind to ensure the animals were safe and our staff made it home.

Just after 6 p.m., while on sectors with our Chief Veterinarian, I saw flames erupt in the foothills—and felt the weight of what was coming. As the animal disaster response agency in a fire-prone region, we had faced emergencies before, including the Bobcat fire in 2020. We thought we were prepared, but this fire would test us in new ways.

The shelter reopened that night for emergency intake. Around 10 p.m., a colleague called me: “You’d better come down here,” she said. A line of people and their pets stretched from our front doors all the way to Central Park. Dogs on leashes, cats in carriers, and other pets waited alongside their families. There was even a horse being walked down Raymond Avenue. In that moment, I knew this day would change our lives forever.

We made a defining decision right then and there: we would help anyone who needed it—human or animal—in the very best way we could.

The first 72 hours were a whirlwind. Hundreds of animals arrived in need of immediate care. Staff offices, our spay/neuter clinic, and training rooms became temporary housing, while adoptable animals were transferred to partner shelters across the state to create space.

Many animals were still trapped behind fire lines, including pets and livestock. With fire-trained search and rescue teams from LA County and national partners, we mobilized quickly to reach them. Injured animals—pets, livestock, and wildlife—arrived in our ICU, many suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation. Our veterinary team treated each pet as if it were their own, providing lifesaving care, free of charge, for as long as needed.

I couldn’t be prouder of our amazing staff and volunteers who worked through exhaustion and heartbreak. There were tears, sleepless nights, and endless worry, but no one ever said, “I can’t do this.”

During this unprecedented time, our community showed up for us in ways for which we will forever be indebted. People came to the shelter ready to lend a hand wherever needed. Thousands of calls and emails poured in with offers to adopt or foster pets. Monetary donations enabled us to continue our lifesaving work without pause.

The steady stream of people seeking safe shelter for their pets was replaced with a line of cars filled to the brim with donations of pet food, litter, and water. Local restaurants dropped off food to our staff and volunteers, helping us get through the incredibly long days.

Our work continued long after the flames were extinguished. Pets whose families lost everything in the fire stayed in our care for months, and some remain with us to this day. We found homes for dozens of fire-impacted animals who had no home to return to, provided veterinary vouchers to families in need of medical support for their pets, and connected displaced residents with pet-friendly housing resources.

A year later, I reflect with pride and gratitude. We saved countless lives and positively impacted thousands of people. We could only accomplish this by working together with our community.

The Eaton fire changed us forever. We emerged stronger, more united, and more committed than ever to helping animals and people in our community. Together, we continue to rebuild, celebrate the wins, and honor the courage, compassion, and resilience that carried us through that January night.

‘People are having trouble getting by’: Conservative slams Trump’s economy on Fox News

A conservative columnist on Wednesday criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy during an interview.

Byron York, a columnist for The Washington Examiner, discussed the state of the economy in an interview on “The Ingraham Angle” with host Laura Ingraham. He highlighted that the economy is an area where the Republican Party is not effectively addressing many people’s concerns, which could spell trouble for the party in the upcoming midterm elections.

“Look at credit card balances; they have gone up and up,” York said. “People are using credit cards for essential items. Car loan delinquencies are going up. These are real indicators that people are having trouble getting by every single day.”

Throughout his second term, Trump has repeatedly made misleading claims about the economy. For example, he has asserted that his administration “defeated inflation,” although economic data suggests otherwise. He has also claimed unprecedented job growth despite statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicating that job growth has been flat since he took office.

Fact-checkers have frequently challenged Trump’s economic narratives, pointing out exaggerations related to manufacturing job creation, trade deficits, and the broader economic recovery.

York appeared to challenge Trump’s narrative on inflation during the interview, stating, “The inflation that went up under Biden is still there.”

Walmart brings the Apple Watch SE 2 with LTE down to an unbelievably low Black Friday price

Just because the likes of Amazon, Best Buy, and Samsung kicked off their extended Black Friday 2025 sales events last week, that doesn’t mean other major US retailers and device manufacturers are to be ignored right now. Walmart, for instance, has joined the party a little late compared to its aforementioned rivals, but still early from a historical standpoint, with a tide of special holiday deals on super-popular products available a couple of days before Thanksgiving this year. Perhaps the greatest such promotion sees the second-gen Apple Watch SE drop to an unreal price with built-in cellular connectivity. Released back in 2022 at a recommended price of $250 and up, the Apple S8-powered timepiece can currently be had for as little as $129. But the wearable is not marked down by only 120 bucks, as $250 is the regular price of an entry-level variant sans 4G LTE support. Instead, you’re actually looking at saving a whopping (and totally unprecedented, of course) $170 here, at least if you hurry. Yes, Black Friday 2025 is technically still three days away, but I highly doubt that Walmart will be able to handle your demand and keep this phenomenal offer going until November 28. Although a vastly improved third-gen Apple Watch SE has been released a couple of months ago, scoring a pretty decent $50 discount of its own in the meantime, the Apple Watch SE 2 (with LTE) is simply too good to be turned down at $129. As long as the 40mm size is not too small for your wrist, that is. Yes, our largely positive Apple Watch SE 2 review from three years ago is (largely) true today as well, with that processor, the Retina display, and the health monitoring tools all looking as great as a cash-strapped hardcore Apple fan can get this Christmas. No, the battery life is not exactly dreamy, but that’s true for most “mainstream” smartwatches around right now.

LeBron James Comes Back In Victory Over Utah Jazz

LOS ANGELES-LeBron James had 11 points and 12 assists in the first game of his unprecedented 23rd NBA season, and Luka Doncic had 37 points and 10 assists in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 140-126 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, November 18 at Crypto. com Arena. 40-year-old James made his season debut in the Lakers’ starting lineup and played 30 minutes after missing training camp and their first 14 games due to sciatica. James didn’t take long to find the flow: He put on a playmaking clinic in the second half, and Doncic scored 17 points in the third quarter while the Lakers pulled away from Utah. Austin Reaves added 26 points as the Lakers improved to 11-4 with their third straight victory. One of the leagues best NBA teams so far. James made a driving layup in the third quarter to extend his streak of double-digit scoring performances to a record 1, 293 games every game in which he has played since Jan. 6, 2007. The four-time NBA champion didn’t score again, but the Lakers moved comfortably ahead. Bronny James played the final 3: 33 and hit a 3-pointer. The Jazz and Lakers will play on Sunday in Utah.

Trump administration asks appeals court to immediately halt ruling on SNAP funding

The Trump administration has asked the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to issue an emergency stay of a judge’s ruling Thursday ordering the administration to fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by today.

Lawyers for the Department of Justice argue that the district court ruling makes a “mockery of the separation of powers.” In their filing, the DOJ stated, “This unprecedented injunction makes a mockery of the separation of powers. Courts hold neither the power to appropriate nor the power to spend. Courts are charged with enforcing the law, but the law is explicit that SNAP benefits are subject to available appropriations.”

U.S. District Judge John McConnell, in his ruling Thursday, ordered the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP for the month of November by Friday.

Last week, McConnell ordered the government to use emergency funds to pay for SNAP in time for the November 1 payments to be made. However, the administration committed to only partially funding the program, stating they needed to reserve additional funds for child nutrition programs.

In his Thursday ruling, McConnell described the government’s argument—that it did not want to tap into emergency funds in order to protect child nutrition programs—as implausible. He accused the Trump administration of “erroneously and intentionally” conflating the funding.

“People have gone without for too long. Not making payments to them for even another day is simply unacceptable,” the judge said.

The government has asked the circuit court to allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which operates SNAP, to continue with the partial payment of benefits and to “not compel the agency to transfer billions of dollars from another safety net program with no certainty of their replenishment.”

Judge McConnell himself denied a request from the government to stay his own decision, stating, “The request for a stay of this decision, either a stay or an administrative stay, is denied. People have gone without for too long. Not making payments to them for even another day is simply unacceptable.”

What Food Banks Need Amid SNAP Funding Crisis

Food banks across the country are experiencing rising demand and resource shortages due to a prolonged government shutdown and uncertainty surrounding the funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

John Sillars, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank in New Orleans, told Good Morning America, “Even before the shutdown, demand was up for our services as a result of USDA policy changes. We are looking to community support more than ever. But we are going to serve those people as best we can.”

Jilly Stephens, CEO of City Harvest in New York City, shared with ABC News, “At City Harvest, we know from experience that even a single missed paycheck or delayed benefit can force families to seek food assistance. We have been distributing food at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, and near LaGuardia and JFK airports to support federal workers impacted by the shutdown.”

**What Happens Next?**

Judge Talwani ordered the federal government to advise the court by Monday on whether they will use the emergency reserve funds to provide reduced SNAP benefits for November or fully fund the program “using both contingency funds and additional available funds.”

The situation remains critical as food banks and federal workers await clarity on the program’s funding and support. Community support continues to play a vital role in helping those in need during this uncertain time.

Blue state ICE agents dodge bullets, speeding cars as left ramps up tracking campaigns

Two shootings involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have taken place over the past 10 days in Southern California, amid increasing tensions as individuals on the left continue to track ICE agents.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin provided a statement to Fox News Digital detailing one such incident. On Thursday in Ontario, California, an individual pulled their car in front of ICE officers. After the officers ordered the driver to leave the area, the individual attempted to run them over by reversing directly at them without stopping, according to McLaughlin.

Fearing for his life, one ICE officer fired shots at the vehicle, which then fled the scene. McLaughlin described the event as “another example of the threats our ICE officers are facing day in and day out.”

Highlighting the increasing danger to ICE personnel, McLaughlin said, “ICE officers now face a 1,000% increase in assaults against them, including cars being used as weapons, and death threats against our agents are up 8,000%.” She added, “This violence must end. Let me be clear: Anyone who assaults, impedes, obstructs, or threatens the lives of federal officers will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

In a separate incident on October 21, DHS reported that TikTok influencer Carlito Ricardo Parias, an undocumented immigrant, tried to ram his car into a law enforcement vehicle in Los Angeles. ICE officers fired shots at Parias, hitting him in the elbow. Additionally, one U.S. Marshals officer was shot in the hand by a ricochet bullet.

Both individuals involved in these incidents are currently in stable condition. DHS officials confirmed that charges are being pursued against Parias for allegedly assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal law enforcement.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Parias had been tracking ICE agents for months prior to his arrest and was known among some as “Tiktokquero,” “El Señor Richard,” and “Richard.”

These incidents underscore the growing threats faced by ICE officers in the course of their duties, amidst heightened political and social tensions surrounding immigration enforcement.

The Bible is speaking to a new generation … and they’re listening

Our world feels like it’s coming apart at the seams morally, culturally, and spiritually. Chaos dominates the headlines, outrage fills our feeds, and the pace of change leaves many feeling disoriented and adrift. Young people, especially, are growing up in an age that questions everything, including truth itself.

Yet amid all this uncertainty, something unexpected is happening: Gen Z is reaching back to one of the oldest and most influential texts in human history—the Bible. It might surprise you. Surveys show Gen Z is the least traditionally “religious” generation in American history. But Bible sales have surged more than 20% in the past year, Scripture content is trending on TikTok, and college Bible studies and campus ministries are filling up.

For a generation raised on social media and skepticism, the ancient words of Scripture are suddenly speaking louder than ever. Why? I believe it’s because the Bible offers what modern culture cannot.

### The Bible Provides Permanence in a World Defined by Flux

When your life is ruled by apps designed to be outdated in a year, the words of Jesus carry a rare kind of authority. His teachings don’t scroll away or expire. They’ve endured for two thousand years because they answer the questions every generation asks: What is right and wrong? What gives life meaning? How do we endure suffering and find hope?

### Scripture Offers Community in a Culture of Isolation

Gen Z is the most connected generation online and the loneliest in real life. Yet when young people open the Bible, they join a family that stretches across centuries and continents. The letters of Paul, the Psalms of David, and the stories of those who walked with Jesus all remind us that faith isn’t an individual experiment. Faith is a shared story. The Bible tells every reader, “You are not alone.”

### God’s Word Invites Reflection Instead of Reaction

Digital life rewards outrage and speed. The Bible calls for quiet and humility. You can’t “doomscroll” through the Sermon on the Mount. You have to pause and listen. In that way, Scripture becomes a kind of resistance to distraction—a place where the anxious and searching can finally breathe.

Skeptics may call this a fad, but history says otherwise. Every period of upheaval drives people back to the foundations. After wars, pandemics, and cultural revolutions, societies rediscover the texts that gave them moral and spiritual grounding.

So while we’re seeing this awakening among Gen Z as new or unprecedented, the truth is that this is a recurring theme whenever a generation searches for hope and meaning.

I’ve witnessed this hunger firsthand. Young people don’t want slogans or sound bites. They want to know: How do we know what we believe? Where did these words come from? Why do they endure?

To answer that question, I set out to trace how the Bible was written and preserved, which culminated in the historical documentary, *Oracles of God*. This is a history lesson that all generations will benefit from, as it answers the age-old question: Is the Bible reliable?

The answers people are finding in Scripture go beyond ancient traditions or sayings. These words of Jesus and the stories in the New Testament are alive and will continue to inspire generations to come.

In uncertain times, the Bible reminds us that truth is not fragile and hope is never outdated. As Isaiah wrote,

> “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.”
> — Isaiah 40:8

That eternal promise is one this generation seems ready to rediscover.

Supreme Court denies Google’s appeal, upholds Play Store reform order

**Supreme Court Denies Google’s Appeal, Upholds Play Store Reform Order**

*By Mudit Dube | Oct 07, 2025, 10:30 AM*

**Overview**

The US Supreme Court has declined Google’s request to stay a lower court’s order that mandates significant changes to its Play Store. This decision comes as Google prepares to appeal a lawsuit ruling filed by Epic Games, the developer of the popular game Fortnite.

**Injunction Details**

The injunction was issued last year by US District Judge James Donato. It requires Google to allow users to download rival app stores within the Play Store and make Play Store’s app catalog available to competitors. However, these changes will not take effect until July 2026.

Additionally, the judge ruled that Google must permit developers to include external links in their apps. This would enable users to bypass Google’s billing system.

**Background of the Legal Battle**

Epic Games filed the lawsuit against Google in 2020, accusing the tech giant of violating antitrust laws through its restrictive app store policies. Epic won a jury trial in San Francisco in 2023, and the July ruling was subsequently upheld by a federal appeals court.

Google has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The company called Judge Donato’s order unprecedented, warning that implementing the changes could cause reputational harm, introduce safety and security risks, and potentially place Google at a competitive disadvantage.

**Google’s Appeal Strategy**

In its Supreme Court filing, Google highlighted that the mandated changes could impact over 100 million US Android users and 500,000 developers. The company intends to file a full appeal with the Supreme Court by October 27, which could lead the justices to take up the case during their current nine-month term.

**Epic Games’ Position**

Epic has accused Google of using “flawed security claims” as a pretext to maintain control over Android devices. The developer urges the Supreme Court to let Judge Donato’s injunction take effect, arguing that consumers and developers would benefit from increased competition, more choices, and lower prices.

**Appeals Court Ruling**

In July, a three-judge panel from the San Francisco-based 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the injunction. The panel noted that Epic’s lawsuit was “replete with evidence that Google’s anticompetitive conduct entrenched its dominance” in the app store market.

**What’s Next?**

As the legal battle continues, industry observers are closely watching to see how the Supreme Court will handle Google’s full appeal later this month, which could dramatically reshape the Android app ecosystem.

*Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.*
