WURD holds Founder’s Day Gala to recognize contributions of Dr. Walter Lomax

WURD Radio held its annual gala over the weekend at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center, recognizing the contributions of Dr. Walter P. Lomax, the founder of the station. The event celebrated the station’s 13th year of existence and highlighted the significant impact WURD has had in informing Philadelphia’s Black community.

“I really just want to thank everyone who is here,” said Sara Lomax, president and CEO of WURD Radio. “These are really challenging times for an organization like WURD. We sit at the intersection of media, which is under attack, and Black media empowerment, which is absolutely under attack.” Lomax expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing support from listeners and the wider community.

During the event, WURD announced the launch of “Freedom Journeys: Celebrating the Lives of 250 Phenomenal Philadelphians,” a new multimedia project spotlighting the work of Black residents—both past and present—who have made an impact. These two to three-minute video presentations will air on WURD leading up to Philadelphia’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday in 2026.

“The point is we’re under attack right now,” said City Council President Kenyatta Johnson in his remarks. “We know African American history is American history, and so this evening is an invitation for all of us to stand and speak truth to power.”

This year’s recipients of the 2025 Community Impact Award included:

– Loree Jones Brown, CEO of Philabundance
– Solomon Jones, WURD Radio host and executive director of ManUp PHL
– Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute

“It’s moments like these, when our nation’s leaders are not demonstrating compassion, that our work becomes even more important,” said Loree Jones Brown. “The weight of these challenges and the scale of the work can be overwhelming. That is why I am grateful not to have to labor alone. Nights like this lighten the burden.”

Jones Brown also shared words of encouragement for all who attended. “We are all in this fight to make Philadelphia, the country, and our communities better places. Everything I’ve done, I’ve done out of love for my people,” she said. “I am honored to be honored by my own, and I am grateful for the platform that I have been given at WURD. I love our folks.”

### “Defenders of Democracy” Panel Discussion

The Founder’s Day event featured a “Defenders of Democracy” panel discussion, moderated by WURD host James Peterson. The panel included attorneys Michael Coard, Keir Bradford-Grey, and Dolores Robinson. They focused on the current state of democracy in the United States, legal strategies to protect the civil rights of African Americans, immigration, and the military occupation of American cities.

“People often say that things are getting worse in America; that’s not really true,” said Michael Coard. “Racism is more visible in America, and we’re figuring out a plan to reignite the civil rights-type litigation of the 50s and 60s.” Coard emphasized the importance of Black media in activism, telling the stories of the struggles and issues that Black communities face across the nation.

Mayor Cherelle Parker, who also spoke at the event, said, “What this meeting affirms for me is that all of us, in our own right, have a role to play. There are many ways we can contribute to the social and economic advancement of African and African American people here in our great city.”

Concern over delays on riverside path

The planning approval for the 255-home Meridian Waterside scheme in Southampton included important public realm improvements, such as the extension of a local park and the creation of a new waterfront walkway along the River Itchen. However, with one of the three blocks of flats still incomplete, the Southampton Commons and Parks Protection Society (SCAPPS) has raised concerns about the lack of progress on these promised public space enhancements.

Speaking at the recent court leet ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Graham Linecar of SCAPPS addressed the issue, highlighting the stalled work on the riverside path and green space.

Inland Homes, the original developer of the former Meridian site, went into administration some time ago. Although the planning permission clearly included the construction of a landscaped riverside path and public green space, no progress has been made on these key features. The site’s administrator arranged for an alternative developer to complete the remaining housing, but the riverfront path and green space improvements have yet to be started.

Mr. Linecar’s presentment called on the city council to clarify what steps they have taken—and plan to take—to ensure the delivery of this significant public realm enhancement. SCAPPS and other local stakeholders had believed these improvements were guaranteed as part of the planning permission.

The proposed walkway would run along the west bank of the River Itchen, starting just north of Northam Bridge and extending towards the Itchen Riverside Broadwalk.

Inland Homes entered administration two years ago with one of the three blocks of flats still unfinished. Last year, estate agent Savills was marketing the partially constructed Southern House with an asking price of £7 million. This building, anticipated to contain 104 apartments featuring one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, remains covered in scaffolding and incomplete.

The entire regeneration project is taking place on the site formerly occupied by Meridian TV studios.

Mr. Linecar’s presentment regarding the riverside path issue will be reviewed by council leaders and is expected to receive a formal response in the coming months. He also questioned whether lessons have been learned about attaching effective conditions to planning permissions to prevent similar situations from arising in the future.

Government shares major cancer research update amid growing calls for action

Each year, approximately 13,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour in the UK. Among them are around 900 children and young people. Brain tumours are currently the biggest cancer killers of children and adults under 40, according to the Brain Tumour Charity.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has recently issued a major update following widespread concerns about the current state of brain cancer treatment in the UK. This message responds to an ongoing petition, which has been signed by over 20,000 people, calling for increased funding and improved treatment efforts.

The parliamentary campaign behind the petition pressed the Government to examine increased funding to “give patients a fighting chance.” Campaigners argued that treatments for brain tumours “haven’t changed in decades” and advocated for expanded exploratory research initiatives.

In response, the DHSC acknowledged that “more needs to be done” and confirmed that a National Cancer Plan is due to be published later this year. The department’s statement, published on October 3, reads:

> “Every brain cancer diagnosis has a life-changing impact on patients and their families. Research is vital to ensure people can access the most effective, cutting-edge treatments and receive the highest quality care.

> We currently invest £8 million in research projects and programmes focused on brain tumours. The National Institute for Health Research’s (NIHR) wider investments in research infrastructure amount to an estimated £37.5 million, supporting the delivery of 261 brain tumour research studies and enabling over 11,400 people to participate in potentially life-changing brain tumour research.

> However, we understand that more needs to be done to boost research into brain tumours.”

The DHSC also stated that it is working closely with patient and research communities to stimulate high-quality research applications. This includes the establishment of a national Brain Tumour Research Consortium and a dedicated funding call.

However, the department stressed that there are currently “no plans” to introduce a ‘Right to Try’ initiative for new treatments. For context, the Right to Try Act in the United States permits eligible patients with life-threatening conditions to access unapproved investigational treatments under certain conditions.

Regarding new and personalised treatments, the DHSC reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing patient access to effective and innovative new medicines, including those for brain tumours. It noted:

> “There are established routes to support timely access for NHS patients to safe, clinically and cost-effective new medicines. There are no plans to introduce a new Right to Try initiative for treatments.

> The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) evaluates all new medicines and makes recommendations for the NHS on whether they should be routinely funded. NICE aims to issue guidance on new medicines as close as possible to the point of licensing.

> Our Life Sciences Sector Plan, published in July, sets out measures to streamline decision-making and accelerate patient access to new medicines by three to six months.

> The NHS in England is required to fund medicines recommended by NICE, and NHS England funds cancer medicines from the point of positive draft NICE guidance, accelerating patient access by around five months on average.”

Looking ahead, the DHSC highlighted the upcoming National Cancer Plan, due to be published later this year. The plan will focus on patients and cover the entire cancer pathway—from referral and diagnosis to treatment and aftercare. The goal is to improve all aspects of cancer care and outcomes, aiming to reduce the number of lives lost to cancer over the next ten years, including from brain cancer.

The petition, titled *“Invest in brain cancer and give rights turn terminal into treatable,”* currently has over 20,000 signatures. If it surpasses 100,000, it will be considered for a debate in Parliament.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Comic-Con badges will go on sale to the general public in November, following the recent sellout of badge sales for returning attendees.

The queue for returning attendees opened early Saturday morning, with sales beginning at 9 a.m. By 10:30 a.m., all returning registration badges were sold out, according to a post from Comic-Con International on social media.

However, there is still good news for those who missed out. Anyone who didn’t secure the days they wanted or any tickets during Saturday’s returning member ticket queue will have another chance in November.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 badges go on sale to the general public on **Saturday, November 15, 2025**. The open registration queue waiting room opens at 7:30 a.m. PST, with sales starting at 9 a.m. Those in the queue will be randomly selected to purchase badges, as stated on the official website.

Anyone interested in buying Comic-Con tickets on November 15 must create an account and obtain a member ID. Purchased badges will be mailed to the address listed in the member ID.

Firefighters visit Tanner Duckrey School in North Philly to raise awareness

About 425 students from kindergarten through eighth grade had the exciting opportunity to board a real firetruck, check out fire hoses, and receive free firefighter hats during Fire Prevention Week at the Dr. Tanner G. Duckrey Public School in North Philadelphia on Monday.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Jeff Thompson attended the event held at 1501 West Diamond St. He emphasized the importance of educating children about fire safety from a young age. “We just try to educate them. It starts when they are younger — and hopefully they will share that message with their friends and family and make themselves safer and make the entire community safer,” Thompson said. “They are going to go home and ask their parents to check the batteries in the smoke alarms and all of those things.”

Duckrey Principal David S. Cohen expressed pride in the students for beating some of the fastest school evacuation records during recent fire drills. Each year, the Philadelphia Fire Department selects a school to kick off Fire Prevention Week with a special assembly.

“They watched the fire drill, made sure all the doors were locked and the lights were turned off, examined the fire evacuation routes, and set the timer, ensuring everyone got out quickly,” Cohen explained. “Our time is a minute and 58 seconds, which is less than most schools.”

The event concluded with a celebration in the schoolyard, where students were informed about best practices for staying safe during fires.

Students received valuable safety tips, such as the importance of feeling the door to check for heat in case of a fire—signaling danger on the other side. “If possible, children should try to go to an open window and seek help,” Cohen advised.

Additionally, he highlighted the necessity of testing smoke alarms monthly by holding the test button for five seconds. Free smoke alarms are available from the Philadelphia Fire Department by calling 311. The department installs approximately 8,500 smoke alarms annually to enhance community safety.

“Every season is fire season, and fires are everyone’s fight!” said Philadelphia Fire Department Spokesperson Rachel Cunningham. She noted that in autumn and winter, the use of space heaters and fires for warmth presents obvious dangers. Throughout the rest of the year, fires can be sparked by activities such as cooking and grilling, discarding cigarette butts in dry and windy conditions, faulty electrical cords or wiring, and various other hazards.
