Message from Peaks Island: Ignore the noise and build community | Letter

These times are overwhelming politically. I am writing to encourage everyone to not buy into the noise. Instead, focus on what you can do locally.

Maybe it’s reaching out to a neighbor in some way to help build your community. Here on Peaks Island, we are baking cookies and selling homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches at concerts and other public events. So far, we’ve raised over $3,000 to support the immigrant community.

While this may not seem like much, the $30 provided by Mainers for Humane Immigration to an illegally detained person’s commissary account can mean the difference between not eating for two days—because the jail’s kitchen is, for whatever reason, not operational—and having a meal.

Help where you can.

Proton Data Breach Observatory reports as soon as your personal data hits the dark web

Security-conscious readers are likely familiar with the data breach alert site Have I Been Pwned. However, a new website from Proton aims to provide alerts at an earlier stage, offering what the company describes as near real-time reporting.

### Introducing Proton’s Data Breach Observatory

The team behind ProtonMail has launched the Data Breach Observatory to address a critical issue: it can often take too long to discover when personal data has been made available for sale on the dark web. Despite existing laws, relying on large companies to disclose data breaches and compromised personal data is often unreliable. Many organizations delay revealing breaches for weeks or even months.

This delay is exactly why websites like Have I Been Pwned exist — they aim to notify individuals about stolen data as soon as there is a reasonable basis to believe a breach has occurred. However, Have I Been Pwned takes a cautious approach to avoid false alarms triggered by hoax claims from attackers.

### How Have I Been Pwned Validates Breaches

To ensure breach legitimacy, Have I Been Pwned typically performs several validation steps, such as:

– Checking if the affected service has publicly acknowledged the breach.
– Searching Google to determine if the breach data is simply copied from another source.
– Verifying whether the data’s structure matches what is expected in a genuine breach.
– Assessing whether attackers provide credible evidence demonstrating the attack vector.
– Reviewing the attackers’ history for a pattern of either reliably releasing breaches or falsifying them.

### Proton’s More Aggressive Approach

In contrast, Proton’s Data Breach Observatory takes a more proactive stance by reporting personal data as soon as it is offered for sale on the dark web, according to Engadget. Proton monitors the dark web directly, tracking locations where data thieves advertise stolen information.

By observing these exchanges, Proton aims to warn potential victims as early as possible — sometimes even before the targeted organizations themselves become aware of the leak. Beyond individual alerts, the Observatory is designed to raise public awareness about the scale of cybercrime and to increase accountability, making it harder for companies to hide data breaches.

### Near Real-Time Updates and Collaboration

Proton plans to update the Observatory close to real-time, thanks to a partnership with risk detection firm Constella Intelligence. Although the website currently appears to be available only in German, an English version is expected soon.

### Our Take: More Choice Is Better

Offering multiple data breach alert options gives users greater choice. While Proton’s more aggressive reporting may produce some false positives, it has the advantage of providing earlier warnings for genuine breaches.

Though hackers sometimes make hoax claims for notoriety, when they actually offer stolen data for sale, these cases are more likely to be authentic. Users who want to stay ahead of potential risks may find Proton’s Data Breach Observatory a valuable addition to their security toolkit.

Kim Kardashian Endorses Moon Landing Conspiracy Theory on “The Kardashians”

During Thursday’s episode of “The Kardashians” on Hulu, Kim Kardashian, 45, sparked controversy by suggesting that the 1969 moon landing was fake. On the show, she attempted to convince her “All’s Fair” co-star Sarah Paulson, 50, of her belief.

“I’m sending you, so far, a million interviews with both Buzz Aldrin and… the other one [Neil Armstrong],” Kardashian said to Paulson on the set of the new Ryan Murphy series.

Paulson responded, “Yes, do it.”

Kardashian then shared a perplexing quote she claimed was from Buzz Aldrin, 95: “This girl says, ‘What was the scariest moment?’ And [Aldrin] goes, ‘There was no scary moment, cause it didn’t happen. It could’ve been scary, but it wasn’t, cause it didn’t happen.’”

The SKIMS founder speculated that Aldrin “has gotten old” and might be slipping up about the moon landing. “So I think it didn’t happen,” Kardashian admitted.

Intrigued, Paulson told Kardashian she was going on a “massive deep dive” to investigate these claims.

Reiterating her stance during a confessional in her trailer, Kardashian said, “I don’t think we did. I think it was fake. I’ve seen a few videos [of] Buzz Aldrin talking about how it didn’t happen. He says it all the time now, in interviews.”

She even suggested involving her sister Khloe Kardashian by having Aldrin on her podcast. “Maybe we should find Buzz Aldrin,” she remarked while scrolling on her phone.

Kardashian continued voicing typical moon landing conspiracy questions: “Why does Buzz Aldrin say it didn’t happen? There’s no gravity on the moon, why is the flag blowing? The shoes that they have in the museum that they wore on the moon is a different print than the photos. Why are there no stars?”

When a producer asked her what she would say to people calling her crazy for these theories, Kardashian replied, “They’re gonna say I’m crazy no matter what. But like, go to TikTok. See for yourself.”

The Post has reached out to Aldrin’s representatives for comment.

### The Truth Behind Aldrin’s Comments

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first two people to walk on the moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission. The third crew member, Michael Collins, remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module and did not walk on the moon.

The comments from Aldrin that Kardashian referenced actually come from a 2015 interview and have been widely taken out of context, fueling conspiracy theories.

When asked about the “scariest moment” of the journey during an event, Aldrin simply replied that a scary moment “didn’t happen.” In another misinterpreted clip, a young girl asked Aldrin why no one has returned to the moon for so long, to which he responded, “Because we didn’t go there anymore.”

### Aldrin’s Recent Reflections

In July, Aldrin marked the 56th anniversary of the moon landing on social media with a heartfelt post.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“July 20, 1969. ‘Contact light, engine stop.’ The Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle touched down at Tranquility Base on the Moon. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong and I stepped foot on the Moon, with Michael Collins orbiting close-by.”

He added, “An achievement resulting from years of incalculable effort, commitment, and team work.”

**Ayan Lohchab Reflects on Patna Pirates’ Spectacular Comeback in Pro Kabaddi 2025**

Patna Pirates’ star raider Ayan Lohchab recently shared his thoughts on what he considers the best moment of the Pro Kabaddi 2025 season. Despite a challenging start, the Pirates staged an incredible turnaround to qualify for the Playoffs and advance all the way to Eliminator 3. Although they eventually fell short of making the final, losing to the Telugu Titans in the third Eliminator, their journey was nothing short of remarkable.

At one point in the season, the Patna Pirates were at the bottom of the league standings and on the brink of elimination. However, they defied the odds by winning five consecutive games to claw their way into the top eight, finishing seventh after the league stage. The Pirates didn’t stop there—they went on to win their first Play-in match and both Eliminator 1 and Eliminator 2, making it eight consecutive victories.

Reflecting on this historic run, Ayan Lohchab said in an exclusive interaction with Sportskeeda,
*”I think winning eight consecutive matches was the best moment for me. I don’t think any team would have won these many matches in a row. It was a very good comeback and this was the best moment.”*

The Pirates’ season began on a rocky note, winning only three out of their first ten games. Speaking about the turnaround, Ayan credited the team’s coach and management for their unwavering support throughout the campaign.

*”In the beginning, the team and the defense didn’t do well. We didn’t start well. Then our defense started working well, and the raiding team was doing well. So, our team made a comeback. And the coach and management also supported us, so it felt very good,”* he remarked.

He further added,
*”This is the thing—on our comeback and knowing we can bounce back from anywhere. Our management was very good. There was a lot of support from the team. We were winning 8 consecutive matches. We kept on playing. They kept on asking us to play our game. We didn’t have any pressure from the team. They kept on asking us to play our game.”*

Ayan Lohchab was instrumental in the Pirates’ resurgence, finishing the season as the best raider with 316 raid points from 22 matches, including 16 Super 10s.

Regarding the team’s ability to win consecutive high-pressure games, Ayan highlighted their fitness and mental strength. The Pirates faced multiple back-to-back matches during their winning streak, which demanded both physical endurance and resilience.

*”We had a very good camp. I think our team was the most fit. We played a lot of back-to-back matches. We worked well on it, that is why we could play so many games back-to-back, which were also do-or-die matches,”* he explained.

Despite his standout individual performances, Ayan emphasized that the team’s collective effort was the key to their success. He pointed out that personal achievements meant little unless the entire team performed as a cohesive unit.
