Renowned restaurant chain closes after being targeting by anti-Israel protests

**Plant-Based Kosher Chain Shouk Closes Permanently Amid Protests and Boycotts**

Shouk, a plant-based kosher street-food chain based in Washington, D.C., has permanently shut down its final locations this month. The closures come after two years of protests and boycotts led by anti-Israel activists, which significantly impacted the business.

Once celebrated by the Food Network and *The Washington Post* for its popular “Shouk Burger,” the chain operated five stores across the region. However, local activist group DC for Palestine spearheaded a boycott campaign alleging that Shouk’s falafel and other menu items “appropriated” Palestinian cuisine. The group also accused the owners of being “complicit in Israeli apartheid.”

Dennis Friedman, a Jewish American co-owner who, along with Israeli partner Ran Nussbacher, opened the first Shouk location over a decade ago, rejected these accusations. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Friedman emphasized that Shouk’s mission was to bring people together.

“I don’t agree with that because the intention of Shouk was pure and good,” Friedman said. “When my business partner came to me, it wasn’t ‘let’s make Israeli food.’ He wanted to make plant-based food that reminded him of his childhood and home. That was the core of where we started to build the recipes.”

Friedman explained that Shouk has primarily been promoted as a Mediterranean, plant-based, and Middle Eastern restaurant. “Very rarely have we claimed anything else. That’s why Shouk is written in both Arabic and Hebrew in all the stores because we are a place to bring everyone together.”

He described Shouk as “a gathering place for people of all races, colors, and creeds to come together to enjoy food” that is good for customers and the planet alike.

The co-owner noted that their Georgetown location was the first target of protests, citing its proximity to Georgetown University and the area’s “heavy Muslim population.” Friedman said business was thriving before October 7, but protests quickly began to damage their income.

“We reached out to local business groups and representatives and hired security outside our stores,” Friedman said, describing the experience of being harassed by protesters over the past two years as “scary and unnerving.”

He recounted some disturbing incidents: “We had everything from little children coming into the store during a busy lunch screaming ‘Free Palestine’ while their parents videoed for social media.”

Friedman called the protests part of a “very coordinated” and effective effort by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to hurt Shouk.

“There were posters of dead baby Palestinian children on the windows or on our seating outside. It ranged from vandalism to intimidation to maybe things that we don’t even know,” he added.

Reflecting on Shouk’s 12-year run, Friedman called it an “amazing experience” beyond his “wildest dreams.” He said the business was “near and dear” to his heart, and stressed that he and Nussbacher made every effort to support their employees throughout the closures.

“Most of our staff have been with us since we opened,” Friedman said. “Our turnover was very low because we ran the company ethically, we ran it well, and we ran it fairly. So our staff became part of our family, and they didn’t want to leave.”

Shouk closed its last locations just days before a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reached.

DC for Palestine celebrated the closures as a “BDS win” in an Instagram post, writing:

“Shouk WAS one of the main targets of our ‘APARTHEID? I DON’T BUY IT’ consumer boycott initiative! Much of what they served was Palestinian food that they culturally appropriated as ‘Israeli street food.’ Additionally, they imported Israeli ingredients for their dishes. TODAY WE ARE HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT, AS OF OCTOBER 1, 2025, SHOUK HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS, PERMANENTLY!”

The group urged supporters to continue boycotting U.S. and local businesses that sell Israeli products.

Philadelphia 76ers Already Making ‘Silly’ Excuses for Joel Embiid

In their opening game of the season, the Philadelphia 76ers secured a much-needed victory over the Boston Celtics. After a disappointing campaign last year, the 76ers were desperate to start this season on the right foot. Thanks to stellar performances from VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia began the year with a promising 1-0 record.

However, the game’s spotlight on Joel Embiid was less encouraging. The star center made only one of his nine shots, finishing with just four points in 20 minutes of play. Still managing his workload as he recovers from a lingering leg injury, Embiid appeared to be a shadow of his usual dominant self.

Despite earning $55.2 million this season, the 76ers are not overly concerned about his slow start—for now.

### Philadelphia 76ers Make Excuses for Joel Embiid

Embiid was initially not expected to play on opening night. Having missed the majority of the preseason, it seemed he was rushed back into action prematurely. Many argue it might have been wiser to allow him to fully recover, especially considering the team is currently attributing his poor performance to injury and “rust.”

Even after a lackluster outing, Embiid still received some praise. Head coach Nick Nurse said, “I’m super happy he was out there. I think that he played good. I know that’s going to sound silly, one for nine. He just didn’t shoot it very good. I thought he transferred the ball good. I thought he made some good decisions. I thought he took good shots. I thought he protected the rim.”

While Nurse may be content with Embiid’s effort, the numbers tell a different story. Embiid recorded a plus/minus of -16, which is rare in a winning effort. Though he avoided turnovers, his shooting was undeniably poor. Defensively, his impact was minimal—the Celtics shot 46.2% when he was on the floor and 47.3% when he was off, a negligible difference.

Despite the subpar performance, Nurse quickly offered excuses. “He hasn’t done much, right?” the coach remarked. “He’s kind of played a scrimmage and a preseason game, and I think there’s some rust there, but I thought he was moving good and made good decisions, which is really positive.”

### Philadelphia 76ers Need Embiid at His Best

Joel Embiid remains one of the greatest players in Sixers history. When healthy, his dominance is unquestionable. Yet, despite his stardom, the 76ers have never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, even while sharing the court with elite talent.

This season, the 76ers are fully committed to Maxey, Embiid, and Paul George. With the addition of Edgecombe, after just one game, Philadelphia looks poised to be among the NBA’s top teams. They have always been competitive but have yet to take that crucial next step toward championship contention.

The hope is that Embiid will soon regain his full form and lead the team to greater success in the months ahead.

**Napoleon Bonaparte’s Catastrophic Invasion of Russia: New Discoveries Challenge Long-Held Disease Theory**

Napoleon Bonaparte’s disastrous invasion of the Russian Empire in 1812 remains one of history’s most infamous military blunders. In the summer of that year, the French emperor led over 615,000 troops of the Grand Army across Eastern Europe’s Neman River, aiming to compel Russia to join a continental blockade against the United Kingdom. However, within less than six months, more than half a million of Napoleon’s soldiers succumbed to starvation, hypothermia, and disease.

The failed campaign is still extensively studied today. Historical accounts have long suggested typhus as a leading cause of death among the French troops. Yet, recent microbial analyses of Grand Army soldiers’ remains reveal that at least two other pathogens were central in claiming thousands of lives.

A new study published in the journal *Current Biology* overturns the long-held belief that typhus was the main killer. Instead, researchers found that enteric fever (typhoid) and relapsing fever played major roles in the deadly toll.

### Why the Typhus Theory Persisted

It is understandable why typhus theory prevailed for decades. French doctors and soldiers’ primary accounts frequently cited typhus as potentially responsible for more deaths than the Russian army itself. Supporting this, the discovery of typhus’s main vector—body lice—on bodily remains, along with trace DNA of *Rickettsia prowazekii* (the bacteria causing typhus), reinforced this narrative.

### New Technologies, New Insights

Recent advances in sequencing technology prompted a team of microbial paleogenomicists led by Nicolás Rascovan from France’s Institut Pasteur to reexamine the causes of death among the Grand Army casualties. Their research focused on remains retrieved from a mass grave in Vilnius, Lithuania—a site along the French army’s retreat route in December 1812.

After DNA was extracted and sequenced from the teeth of 13 soldiers, the team filtered out environmental contamination to search specifically for bacterial pathogens. Surprisingly, none of the samples showed evidence of typhus. Instead, fragments of *Salmonella enterica* and *Borrelia recurrentis* were detected.

*Salmonella enterica* is the bacterium responsible for enteric or typhoid fever, while *Borrelia recurrentis* causes relapsing fever.

### Explaining the Overlap with Typhus

This discovery sheds light on why typhus had been misidentified for so long. Enteric fever’s name derives from its symptomatic similarities to typhus—“typhoid” literally means “resembling typhus.” Notably, enteric fever was not recognized as a distinct disease until later in the 19th century.

Relapsing fever, meanwhile, is also transmitted by body lice, the same vector linked to typhus. This overlap likely contributed to earlier confusion in identifying the exact pathogens involved.

### Reassessing Previous Findings

Rascovan’s team also revisited prior detections of *R. prowazekii* (typhus) and trench fever (*Bartonella quintana*) in the same mass grave. They suggest that earlier identifications may have been affected by different sequencing technologies—namely polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

According to Rascovan, “Ancient DNA gets highly degraded into pieces that are too small for PCR to work. Our method is able to cast a wider net and capture a greater range of DNA sources based on these very short ancient sequences.”

### An Unexpected Historical Connection

The study also revealed an intriguing historical link. The strain of *Borrelia recurrentis* found in Napoleon’s soldiers traces back to a lineage previously discovered in Iron Age Britain, approximately 2,000 years earlier.

Interestingly, all previously sequenced modern *B. recurrentis* strains belong to entirely different lineages. The one uncovered in this study appears to have survived long enough to wreak havoc on the Grand Army.

“It’s very exciting to use a technology we have today to detect and diagnose something that was buried for 200 years,” said Rascovan.

This groundbreaking research not only challenges established historical narratives but also demonstrates the power of modern technology in uncovering hidden truths from the past.
