NEW YORK — Police found two teenage girls dead atop a train car at a Brooklyn subway station early on October 4. Authorities say the deaths are likely related to subway surfing, a dangerous trend that involves climbing on top of moving train cars.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., New York City police officers responded to a 911 call at the Marcy Avenue subway station. Upon arrival, officers discovered two unidentified girls unconscious and unresponsive on top of a J train. According to local news reports, the train had just crossed the Williamsburg Bridge from Manhattan into Brooklyn. First responders pronounced both girls dead at the scene, the NYPD confirmed.

Identification of the girls is pending, with families being notified, officials added. The investigation is ongoing, including a review of any relevant social media posts leading up to the incident.

A partial suspension of train service between lower Manhattan and Brooklyn occurred as authorities managed the response.

Demetrius Crichlow, president of New York City Transit, expressed heartbreak over the tragedy. “It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game,” he said in a statement. Crichlow urged parents, teachers, and friends to be clear with loved ones: “Getting on top of a subway car isn’t ‘surfing’ — it’s suicide.”

The trend of subway surfing has surfaced on social media, with some individuals filming and sharing the dangerous stunt. This recent tragedy is not isolated; The New York Daily News reported that just hours earlier on October 3, a 14-year-old boy was hospitalized after falling from the top of a Manhattan-bound 7 train in Queens.

Subway surfing has raised significant concerns among city officials due to the resulting injuries and fatalities among youth. The NYPD began tracking subway surfing in 2022 when the trend first emerged. According to NYPD data, at least three people died due to subway surfing in 2025. In 2024, six deaths were reported, and five people died from the activity in 2023.

In response, city and state officials launched a public information campaign in 2023 titled *Subway Surfing Kills: Ride Inside, Stay Alive*, aiming to deter youth from engaging in the dangerous behavior. Additionally, New York City has filed lawsuits against five social media companies, citing harm to youth mental health and highlighting subway surfing as a key example.

The NYPD has also deployed drones to monitor subway lines, while the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has partnered with social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to remove videos depicting individuals riding outside of trains. Through June 2025, the MTA reported over 1,800 such videos had been taken down.

Subway stations regularly broadcast announcements warning against subway surfing. Recently, Bronx native and rapper Cardi B lent her voice to public service announcements aimed at promoting subway safety.

Relief For Robin Uthappa As Sessions Court Sends 2019 Cheque Bounce Case Back For Fresh Hearing

In a relief to former cricketer Robin Uthappa, the sessions court has sent the cheque bouncing case against him back to the magistrate court for a fresh hearing due to non-compliance with mandatory legal provisions.

Earlier, the magistrate court had initiated proceedings against the firm where Uthappa served as a director in connection with the cheque bouncing case. However, the sessions court has now set aside the summons issued by the magistrate against Uthappa. The court noted that the magistrate court should have carried out a preliminary investigation under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code to determine if there were sufficient grounds to summon the accused, especially since Uthappa resides outside the court’s jurisdiction.

Accordingly, the sessions court has directed the magistrate court to hear the case afresh.

### Background of the Case

The complaint was filed against Centaurus Lifestyle Brands Pvt Ltd, where Robin Uthappa was a director. It is claimed that Centaurus Lifestyle had engaged Senior Marketing as their sole distributor for their products in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

### Cheques Bounced in 2019

The dispute arose when Centaurus Lifestyle engaged two additional distributors in October 2017 without the consent of the complainant firm. Following a meeting, the complainant returned all stocks, and Centaurus agreed to make the payment.

In July 2018, goods were dispatched, and in February 2019, Centaurus issued post-dated cheques amounting to Rs. 22.22 lakh. However, these cheques bounced in March 2019 due to insufficient funds, leading to the current proceedings.

**Spanish-Language Journalist Mario Guevara Deported to El Salvador After Months in Immigration Detention**

ATLANTA (AP) — Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist who had been held in immigration detention in Georgia since June, was deported on Friday to El Salvador.

Guevara, 48, was covering a protest just outside Atlanta on June 14 when local police arrested him. Several days later, he was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Since his detention, Guevara’s lawyers have been fighting parallel legal battles in both immigration and federal courts, seeking his release.

In a live video posted on Facebook Friday afternoon, Guevara is seen being escorted by El Salvador government officials. He exits a vehicle and embraces a woman filming the moment on her phone.

“Hello, Mom,” he says. Looking toward the sky, he adds, “My country, my country, my country. Thank God. This isn’t how I wanted to come to my country, but thank God.”

Guevara’s deportation follows a decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday, which declined to put a hold on a deportation order issued last month by the Board of Immigration Appeals.

All criminal charges filed against Guevara since his arrest were dismissed by local prosecutors. His attorneys have argued that his detention was retaliatory—aimed at silencing his journalism work and violating his constitutional rights.

Having fled El Salvador two decades ago due to fear for his safety, Guevara built a large following as a journalist in the Atlanta area. He worked for Mundo Hispanico, a Spanish-language newspaper, for many years before launching a digital news outlet called MG News about a year ago.

He was livestreaming video from a “No Kings” rally protesting the Trump administration when police arrested him in DeKalb County. Guevara was known for arriving at scenes where ICE or other law enforcement agencies were active, often based on tips from community members, and regularly streamed live updates on social media.

Video of his arrest shows him wearing a bright red shirt beneath a vest marked “PRESS.” He told a police officer, “I’m a member of the media, officer,” as he stood on a sidewalk with other journalists. There was no indication of large crowds or confrontations nearby at the time.

Following his arrest, charges against him in DeKalb County and Gwinnett County were dropped by prosecutors. An immigration judge granted Guevara bond in July, but he remained in custody while the government appealed the bond decision.

An earlier immigration case from 2012 had denied Guevara permission to remain in the U.S. He appealed that ruling to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), but the appeal remained undecided when prosecutors administratively closed the case.

Guevara’s lawyers contend he has been authorized to live and work in the U.S. for the last 13 years.

Shortly after he entered ICE custody, the government requested the BIA to reopen his old immigration case. Guevara’s attorneys did not oppose reopening but asked that the case be sent back to the lower immigration court because he has a pending visa application supported by his adult U.S. citizen son.

Last month, the BIA agreed to reopen the case but dismissed Guevara’s appeal and denied his request to return the case to the lower court. It also ordered his deportation to El Salvador and dismissed the government’s appeal of the bond ruling as moot.

Guevara’s legal team appealed to the 11th Circuit, seeking to halt the deportation order while the appeal was pending. They argue that both the BIA ruling and the 11th Circuit’s refusal to stay his deportation are based on incorrect information.

A separate federal court case challenging the constitutionality of Guevara’s detention is still pending. His lawyers have argued that he is being punished for his journalism and have asked a judge to order his immediate release and halt his deportation while the case proceeds.

The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has adjourned the hearing in the high-profile assault case involving 24-year-old Ola driver Kayumddin Qureshi. Qureshi was allegedly brutally attacked last year in Mumbai’s Park Site area by an Audi car owner.

The adjournment came after the victim’s family informed the Commission that they were unable to afford legal expenses and requested that an advocate be appointed at the cost of the state. As a result, the matter has been adjourned to January 12.

### Victim Remains Bedridden with Severe Injuries

During the proceedings, Qureshi’s mother Faimida, sister Shabina, and brother Zainuddin appeared before the Commission. The family stated that Qureshi remains bedridden following the alleged assault, which left him with a severe spinal cord injury, head trauma, and fractures in his hands and leg.

### Commission Seeks Video Verification of Health Condition

To verify the family’s claims, the Commission requested Zainuddin to connect his brother via video call. Speaking from his bed, Qureshi showed visible stitch marks on his left leg. He explained that an earlier accident had left him with a metal rod implanted in his leg. During the alleged assault, he was thrown to the ground, which damaged the rod and worsened his condition, forcing him to undergo further medical procedures.

### SHRC Took Suo Motu Cognisance After Media Report

The SHRC had earlier taken suo motu cognisance following a news report published on September 1, 2024. The report highlighted the alleged indifference of the Park Site Police Station towards the assault. It described how a police officer dismissed the incident as an act committed in a “fit of anger,” despite CCTV footage capturing the brutal attack.

### FIR Filed But No Arrests Made Yet

The incident occurred on August 18, 2024, on LBS Marg in Ghatkopar West. An FIR was eventually filed against Rishabh Bibhash Chakravorthy and Antara Ghosh under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly causing hurt, grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult.

However, no arrests have been made as the charges invoked carry a sentence of less than seven years, allowing the accused to secure bail immediately.

**Sean “Diddy” Combs Declares Himself a ‘New Man’ Ahead of Sentencing in Prostitution Case**

*NEW YORK (AP)* — On the eve of his sentencing, Sean “Diddy” Combs wrote a heartfelt letter to a federal judge Thursday, proclaiming himself to be a new man after confronting the depths to which he had fallen.

Combs, 55, told Judge Arun Subramanian that with his mind now clear of drugs and alcohol after spending a year in jail, he can clearly see how “rotten” he had become before his arrest in September 2024. The case led to his conviction on two prostitution-related counts, with his sentencing hearing set to begin Friday morning.

“Over the past year, there have been so many times that I wanted to give up. There have been some days I thought I would be better off dead,” Combs wrote. “The old me died in jail and a new version of me was reborn. Prison will change you or kill you. I choose to live.”

A jury in July acquitted Combs of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges, but he still faces the possibility of years behind bars. His lawyers argue that the year he has already spent in jail constitutes sufficient punishment, while prosecutors are seeking at least an 11-year prison sentence.

In his letter, Combs took responsibility for his actions, writing, “I have no one to blame for my current reality and situation but myself. In my life, I have made many mistakes, but I am no longer running from them.”

He continued, “I am so sorry for the hurt that I caused, but I understand that the mere words ‘I’m sorry’ will never be good enough, as these words alone cannot erase the pain from the past.”

**Apology for Abuse of Former Girlfriend**

Combs also addressed a violent incident involving his then-girlfriend, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, from 2016. The attack, during which Combs hit, kicked, and dragged Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel, was captured on security camera footage.

“The scene and images of me assaulting Cassie play over and over in my head daily,” Combs wrote. “I literally lost my mind. I was dead wrong for putting my hands on the woman that I loved. I’m sorry for that and always will be.”

Footage of the assault was shown repeatedly during his two-month trial. Several women testified that Combs had beaten, threatened, blackmailed, or sexually assaulted them.

In a letter to the judge ahead of sentencing, Ventura dismissed Combs’ claims of remorse.

“I know that who he was to me—the manipulator, the aggressor, the abuser, the trafficker—is who he is as a human,” she wrote. “He has no interest in changing or becoming better. He will always be the same cruel, power-hungry, manipulative man that he is.”

Ventura noted that Combs had repeatedly denied the assault allegations until the security footage surfaced. She urged the judge to impose a sentence reflecting the strength it took for victims to come forward.

“I hope that your decision considers the many lives that Sean Combs has upended with his abuse and control,” Ventura wrote.

**Acknowledgment of Other Victims**

Combs also apologized to a woman who testified under the pseudonym “Jane.” After hearing her testimony, he said, “I realized that I hurt her.”

Jane testified that Combs had chased her around her home, put her in a chokehold, punched her in the head, kicked her while she was curled up on the ground, dragged her by her hair, and pressured her into having sex with a male sex worker.

“I lost my way. I got lost in my journey. Lost in the drugs and the excess,” Combs wrote. “My downfall was rooted in my selfishness.”

**Seeking Mercy and a Second Chance**

During his time in jail, Combs said he has been reading, writing, attending therapy, working out, and even teaching a six-week course to fellow inmates called *Free Game with Diddy*. The course imparts his business wisdom alongside lessons learned from his mistakes and failures.

He vowed never to commit another crime, telling the judge that he has undergone a spiritual reset.

Rather than making an example of him with a lengthy sentence, Combs implored Judge Subramanian to “make me an example of what a person can do if afforded a second chance.”

“If you allow me to go home to my family, I promise I will not let you down and I will make you proud,” he concluded.
