At least 2 dead, others critically injured after party in North Carolina

A shooting at a large weekend party in southeastern North Carolina resulted in two fatalities and left several others critically wounded, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release posted on social media, Sheriff Burnis Wilkins confirmed that 13 people were shot during the incident. The shooting took place just before 3 a.m. local time on Saturday at a rural location outside of Maxton, approximately 95 miles southwest of Raleigh near the South Carolina border.

Homicide investigators and other law enforcement personnel were on the scene, working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities reported that more than 150 people fled the party before officers arrived.

“There is no current threat to the community as this appears to have been an isolated incident,” the sheriff’s office stated.

At this time, no arrests have been made, and the names of those killed or injured have not been released. The sheriff’s office has asked anyone with information about the incident or those present at the scene to contact investigators.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time,” Sheriff Wilkins said.

Back in the Day: Black beaches were a safe haven for Black life

Many of us have vacationed in Martha’s Vineyard over the years. I personally spent time at this resort in the past and always made it a point to visit its infamous Black beach, the Inkwell. For those unable to travel to this resort, there was another Black beach much closer—Chicken Bone Beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

As summer came to an end, I found myself reflecting on some of the fun activities I enjoyed on beaches I visited during past summers. While lost in these thoughts, I received an email from a nephew living in Millsboro, Delaware. He shared an article from the Delaware News Journal by Andre Lamar titled, “How Racism Led James Brown, Other Stars to Delaware Concerts at a Famous Black Beach.” The article mentioned Black beaches beyond the Inkwell and Chicken Bone Beach, prompting my thoughts to recall a Nigerian proverb I often cite: “Until the lions have their own storytellers, the tale of the hunt shall favor the hunters.”

Today, I want to take you on a journey back in time to explore the Black beaches of “back in the day.” You may have little or no knowledge of these beaches due to the absence of our own storytellers. On August 4, 2022, Travel Coterie, in partnership with TripAdvisor, observed that “just two to three generations ago, prior to desegregation, Jim Crow laws made something as simple as a trip to the beach a difficult task for Black people in America. As desegregation unfolded, Black-founded beach destinations were often stolen, destroyed or written out of existence, leaving many to be forgotten. But the sandy shores are an important part of our collective American history—ones that are well worth a trip.”

Let me take you back in time to provide a clearer understanding of Black beaches of the past.

### What Were Black Beaches?

Based on information I have gathered over the years—from my ancestors as well as various internet sources—“Black beaches,” back in the day, refers to beaches and resort areas that were developed for and frequented by Black Americans during the era of segregation. These locations provided social, cultural, and recreational spaces that were often denied elsewhere.

My reference to Black beaches specifically relates to beaches and social resort facilities of the past that served Black people. As was often the case, we developed our own beaches and resort areas, which became vital centers for Black life and were often the result of the community’s entrepreneurial spirit.

### Notable Black Beaches Across the U.S.

Besides the Inkwell and Chicken Bone Beach, other famous Black beaches include:

– **American Beach, Florida**
Established in the 1930s by the Afro-American Life Insurance Company for its employees and the Black community.

– **Highland Beach, Maryland**
The oldest Black beach, founded in 1893. It became home to prominent Black figures like Paul Robeson, Booker T. Washington, and W.E.B. Du Bois. Located on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, Highland Beach was founded by Charles Douglass, son of Frederick Douglass, after he was refused admission to the all-white Bay Ridge Resort nearby. The home built for Frederick Douglass across the Chesapeake still stands today as a museum dedicated to his life and the history of the beach.

Highland Beach was incorporated in 1922, becoming Maryland’s first Black municipality, run by an all-volunteer governing board. It quickly became a popular retreat for Black families and notable figures such as Booker T. Washington and Langston Hughes. Today, access to the private beaches is limited to residents or those staying at vacation homes nearby.

– **Bruce’s Beach, California**
Created in 1912 by Charles and Willa Bruce to provide the Black community with beach access, though the land was later seized by the government.

– **The Inkwell Beach, Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts**
A significant gathering place for Black Americans since the late 1800s. The name originated as a derogatory term due to the skin color of the beachgoers but was later reclaimed as a symbol of pride.

– **Chicken Bone Beach, Atlantic City, New Jersey**
Located at Missouri Avenue and the Boardwalk, this beach was the designated Black section of the Atlantic City beachfront. The name derives from chicken bones found in the area. From around 1900 until integration, the area was known for its vibrant atmosphere and celebrity visitors.

### Other Black Beach Communities

There were other notable Black beaches as well:

– **Idlewild, Michigan**
Founded by white developers catering to Black vacationers from the Midwest. Established in 1915, it was known as “Black Eden” and “Black Las Vegas.” The resort attracted notable figures such as Madame C.J. Walker and W.E.B. Du Bois. Ownership was transferred to the Idlewild Lot Owners Association in 1921. Entertainers like Cab Calloway and Aretha Franklin performed here. However, as desegregation allowed Black travelers access to previously off-limits locations, Idlewild slowly declined. Efforts are ongoing to restore its former glory with the help of organizations like the Idlewild Historic and Cultural Center and the National Idlewilders Club.

– **Mosquito Beach, Charleston, South Carolina**
A mid-20th century gathering spot featuring a boardwalk, pavilion, restaurants, and music clubs catering to the Black community.

– **Sag Harbor, New York**
Recognized as one of the few Black-owned beachfront communities attracting Black vacationers.

Other Black beaches include:

– Lewis Beach, Delaware (now Johnnie Walker Beach)
– Rosedale Beach, Maryland
– Elktonia-Carr’s Beach, Maryland
– Sparrow’s Beach, Maryland
– Henry’s Beach, Maryland
– Atlantic Beach, South Carolina (the only historically Black-owned beach to have remained in Black hands since its founding in 1934)
– Virginia Key Beach Park, Florida
– Freeman Beach, North Carolina
– The Inkwell, Santa Monica, California
– Amelia Island, Florida
– Buckroe Beach, Virginia
– Gulfside Assembly, Mississippi
– Freeman Park, North Carolina

I suspect there are many more Black beaches beyond those named here. If you have knowledge of others, I invite you to share them with me.

### The Impact of Integration on Black Beaches

In previous columns, I have discussed how integration—despite being a vital and necessary goal—has negatively impacted the Black economic agenda. The rise and fall of Black beaches serve as evidence of how integration contributed to the decline of these vibrant Black-owned and operated spaces that once thrived.

Bill Maher Sounds Off on Trump’s $300 Million White House Renovation: “The Symbolism Is He’s Not Leaving”

Bill Maher has some strong feelings about President Donald Trump’s latest project—and no, it’s not another social media platform.

On Friday’s episode of *Real Time with Bill Maher*, the HBO host took aim at Trump’s controversial $300 million renovation of the White House, calling it a troubling sign of permanence.

“The symbolism is he’s not leaving,” Maher told his panel. “Who puts in a giant ballroom if you’re leaving?”

Earlier that day, demolition began on the East Wing—the portion of the White House long used for guest arrivals and official events. Trump has said the planned 90,000-square-foot ballroom will be funded privately by himself, several major tech companies, and “many generous patriots.”

While Maher admitted the move “bothers” him, the conversation heated up when former RNC chairman Michael Steele pushed back on the comedian’s casual take about the White House being “just a building.”

“We watched this week the destruction of a symbol of this government,” Steele lamented. “Of our democracy, of our pluralistic society.”

“You’re talking about the White House?” Maher shot back. “Oh, it’s a building, Mike.”

Steele disagreed. “Okay, Bill, it’s a building maybe to you, but to a lot of Americans it’s not,” he said, sharing a personal connection. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Steele called the White House his “childhood.”

“I’m going to tell you as a young kid growing up in D.C., when my daddy took me by ‘that building,’ it meant something to me as a 10-year-old,” he recalled. “It meant something to me to grow up in a town where everybody in this country came and protested and cried and screamed and laughed. So that building, to me, was my childhood.”

Steele also slammed Trump for tearing down the East Wing “without accountability.”

Maher acknowledged, “He should have gotten the permits, but that’s how he does things. I agree, but it is just a building, first of all.”

The host pointed out that past presidents have made their own changes to the White House. “That part of the building wasn’t always there,” Maher noted. “Nixon put in a bowling alley. Obama made the tennis court a basketball court. I can’t get this mad about everything, Mike. I just can’t.”

Former Biden White House communications director Kate Bedingfield joined the debate, arguing that the East Wing demolition is part of a larger pattern.

“If this was the only impulsive, reckless, you know, driven by his own desire for self-aggrandizement, then I would give you it’s just a building,” she said. “But it’s not. It’s part of a manner of governing that is tearing at some of the foundations, the institutional foundations in this country. And that’s scary.”

Maher ultimately agreed that Trump’s actions and attitude go beyond architecture.

“What could President Trump not do?” he asked. “He’s drunk with power.”

Shaquille O’Neal responds to NBA gambling arrests

Shaquille O’Neal Expresses Disgust Over NBA Gambling Scandal Involving Coaches and Players

Shaquille O’Neal, the four-time NBA champion, has voiced his embarrassment following recent revelations about illegal sports betting and alleged game-fixing involving NBA figures. On Thursday, O’Neal shared his dismay over the scandal, which reportedly involves several coaches and players manipulating games through rigged gambling schemes.

The investigation has already led to the arrest of Chauncey Billups, Damon Jones, and Terry Rozier, along with 30 others suspected of involvement. Speaking on *Inside the NBA*, O’Neal said, “I’m ashamed that those guys would put their families and their careers in jeopardy.”

Billups, currently the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Damon Jones, a former Cleveland Cavaliers star, stand accused of assisting Mafia members in swindling wealthy individuals during high-stakes poker games. According to the indictment, Billups and other former professional athletes acted as the “face cards,” lending credibility to the games and thereby attracting victims. In return, they allegedly received a portion of the Mafia’s winnings.

Terry Rozier, a point guard for the Miami Heat, is accused of providing inside information to co-conspirators about an injury he suffered in a March 2023 game. This information allegedly enabled others to place bets on his underperformance after he left the game early.

“There’s an old saying in the hood,” O’Neal remarked. “‘All money ain’t good money.’ So if you’re making $9 million and you’re dealing a certain thing like, how much more do you need? Especially if you know you can get caught, face jail time, lose your career, and bring a bad image on yourself, your family, or the NBA.”

O’Neal added bluntly, “They dropped the ball.”

In response to the scandal, the NBA has placed both Rozier and Billups on administrative leave. Damon Jones, who is not currently employed by the league, is not subject to any NBA disciplinary measures at this time.

The NBA is actively cooperating with law enforcement authorities as the investigation continues.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the situation during the Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden on Friday, October 24.

“My initial reaction was I was deeply disturbed,” Silver said in an interview with Amazon Prime reporter Cassidy Hubbarth. “There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition, so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting.”

As this story develops, the NBA and its fans await further updates on one of the most serious scandals to hit the league in recent years.

Four sisters diagnosed with rare brain condition: “Got to be kidding”

Paul and Ashlee Higginbotham knew what was and wasn’t normal for their kids. As the parents of six, they had seen a lot of illnesses and tantrums. But they were baffled by the behavior of their youngest daughter, Austyn.

Austyn was “just not happy” and “never content,” Ashlee said. As an infant, she never slept and cried constantly. She was “never smiling, never laughing,” the toddler’s mother recalled. Austyn had mild developmental delays and a tremor.

At 18 months old, genetic testing revealed that Austyn had a genetic condition called Chiari malformation. The condition occurs when the lower part of the brain does not fit inside the skull and bulges out of the opening where the skull joins the spinal cord, explained Dr. David Harter, director of pediatric neurosurgery at NYU Langone.

This malformation puts pressure on both the brain and spinal cord and can cause symptoms like limb weakness, difficulty breathing, scoliosis, headaches, and nerve pain. If left untreated, it can result in lifelong pain and problems such as paralysis and nerve damage. Most Chiari malformation patients are born with it. The rare condition affects about 1 in every 2,000 people and has no clear cause, Dr. Harter said.

Ashlee admitted she had never heard of Chiari malformation before. “That moment when Austyn’s MRI results came up on my screen and we read the diagnosis of Chiari malformation—that was the moment our world was flipped upside down,” she said.

### Trying to Hold It Together

Further tests showed that Austyn had severe compression in her spine and a spinal fluid blockage, meaning she would need brain surgery.

“Life doesn’t stop. We had five other kids, their lives were still moving, and we were trying to hold it together but we’re terrified,” Ashlee said. “We were traveling three and a half hours away for MRIs, bloodwork, and all these different specialists. Now we need brain surgery? Life was chaos.”

The Higginbothams traveled from West Virginia to New York City to seek care from Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield, a pediatric neurosurgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

### The Surgery

In most cases, surgeons delicately decompress the brain by elevating muscle, drilling bone, and expanding the dura—the sac surrounding the brain. For very young patients like Austyn, surgeons may only remove some of the bone. Both procedures aim to give the brain sufficient space and restore the flow of spinal fluid, Dr. Greenfield explained.

Austyn underwent surgery in March 2023. When she woke up a few hours later, she was like a different child, Ashlee said.

“She was ready to go. She was trying to get out of bed, trying to walk. She was smiley. It was like the pain she’d always felt was gone, and the pain of surgery didn’t match what she’d always felt. She was just ready to run laps around the ICU,” Ashlee recalled.

“When we did the follow-up with Dr. Greenfield, I told him, ‘You gave me her laugh.’”

### Another Shock

The Higginbothams were relieved to find light at the end of the tunnel. But just days later, their world would be rocked again.

Five days after returning from New York, the family took Austyn to a local follow-up appointment. They also brought along Amelia, then 3, because they feared she was showing symptoms of Lyme disease after a recent tick bite.

Imaging revealed that Amelia also had Chiari malformation, coupled with a tethered spinal cord. A tethered cord occurs when the spinal cord becomes abnormally attached to surrounding tissue, such as bones, muscle, or skin. It is seen in about 5% of Chiari malformation patients, Dr. Greenfield said.

Amelia would need surgery to correct the Chiari malformation as well as a procedure to release the tether. The Higginbothams returned to New York, where Dr. Greenfield completed both surgeries in October 2023.

Sitting in the waiting room was “just as nerve-wracking as the first time,” Paul said. “It feels like days that you’re just sitting there, waiting to see what the outcome is.”

Like Austyn, Amelia recovered quickly. But for the Higginbothams, more challenges lay ahead.

### A Pattern Emerges

Their daughter Aubrey, then 7, was moody and had frequent urinary tract infections. One day, Ashlee realized the symptoms were familiar.

“I remember driving down the road, and it just clicked in my head. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I need to get an order for an MRI. She needs to be checked for a tethered cord,’” Ashlee said.

“She was our happy kid, and it was like one day she woke up and was different, like a flip of a switch, and we were losing her. I wish I would have thought of it sooner.”

Sure enough, Aubrey had both Chiari malformation and a tethered spinal cord.

Less than a month after Amelia’s surgery, the Higginbothams were back in Dr. Greenfield’s office.

### “You’ve Got to Be Kidding”

Aubrey’s operation in November 2023 went well, and soon she returned to the happy child her parents recognized. But the rollercoaster wasn’t over yet.

Adalee, then 11, had complained of leg pain for years, but her parents believed it was growing pains. In sixth grade, the pain became so severe that she spent much of her free time in bed.

As her symptoms escalated, the family sought imaging, which showed the same issues as her younger siblings: Chiari malformation and a tethered spinal cord.

“It was such a blur of ‘You’ve got to be kidding,’” Ashlee said. “You hear of people having one or two kids, but four?”

About 10% of Chiari malformation cases have a genetic link, Dr. Greenfield said, but it’s usually between a parent and child. He admitted feeling “a little bit of disbelief” as the diagnoses kept coming.

The couple’s growing knowledge about Chiari malformations, tethered cords, and their symptoms helped piece things together.

Dr. Greenfield decided to operate on Adalee’s tethered cord, which was causing her pain, but not on the Chiari malformation itself. Dr. Harter said if a Chiari malformation isn’t causing symptoms, doctors prefer to monitor it rather than operate immediately.

Adalee recovered from surgery in March 2025 and later joined her school’s dance team, Ashlee shared.

### The Most Amazing Gift

The Higginbothams screened their eldest two children for Chiari malformations; thankfully, neither has the condition.

Austyn underwent a successful follow-up surgery in February 2025. Ashlee noted that about 20% of children who have the minimal operation will require a second procedure.

Now, the family is enjoying their “new normal,” Ashlee said. The house is full of laughter and smiles. Austyn (4), Amelia (6), Aubrey (9), and Adalee (12) are active and happy.

Some of the girls still experience occasional symptoms or pain, which Dr. Greenfield said is common in older children who require surgery for Chiari malformations. But it is nothing like before, the Higginbothams said.

“It is a relief,” Ashlee shared, “to finally see my children healthy.”

“Dr. Greenfield gave us our family back, and that is the most amazing gift anyone could get,” Ashlee said. “Some days we weren’t sure how things would ever get better for our girls. It’s been a whirlwind, but we’re thankful we are where we are today.”

Why XRP Price is Up Today?

XRP Price Surges 2.94% to $2.48, Outperforming Broader Crypto Market

XRP’s price today surged by 2.94% to reach $2.48 over the past 24 hours, outperforming the broader cryptocurrency market, which recorded a modest 0.9% gain. This rally is fueled by growing institutional interest, driven by Ripple’s recent strategic moves and positive market developments.

**Ripple Prime Launch Boosts Institutional Adoption**

On October 24, Ripple finalized its acquisition of prime brokerage Hidden Road, rebranding it as Ripple Prime. This milestone positions Ripple as the first crypto firm to operate a global multi-asset prime brokerage, providing institutions with direct access to XRP, Ripple USD, and RLUSD for cross-border settlements and collateral management.

Integration with Ripple’s custody and payment infrastructure is expected to accelerate XRP adoption across more than 300,000 FX derivatives markets. This launch follows Ripple’s aggressive expansion strategy, having completed five major acquisitions since 2023, underscoring the company’s push into institutional finance.

Key indicators to watch include the adoption rate of the RLUSD stablecoin on Ripple Prime, which could further strengthen XRP’s utility in traditional financial markets.

**XRP Derivatives and ETF Growth Signal Strong Institutional Demand**

Institutional demand for XRP is also evident in derivatives activity. Since May 2025, XRP options have reached $26.9 billion in notional volume, averaging $213 million in daily trading. Approximately 567,000 options contracts have been traded, compared to a daily spot volume of 600 million XRP.

Meanwhile, the first U.S.-based XRP ETF, ECARP, has surpassed $100 million in assets under management (AUM). Offering regulated exposure to XRP, this ETF has attracted interest from hedge funds and wealth managers. Additionally, CME-listed XRP derivatives have seen open interest rise to 10,100 contracts, signaling increasing institutional participation.

Analysts suggest that growing ETF inflows could reduce sell pressure on XRP, providing further support to its price.

**XRP Price Analysis**

From a technical perspective, XRP recently reclaimed the $2.30 support level, where 70% of recent trading volume occurred. The Relative Strength Index (RSI-14) stands at 39.69, indicating neutral momentum, while the MACD indicator is approaching a bullish crossover.

Fibonacci retracement levels show the 38.2% retracement at $2.50, aligning closely with the 30-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $2.61. A successful break above $2.61 could target a price of $2.73.

However, traders should remain cautious, as approximately 6 million XRP were moved to exchanges in the past week, potentially signaling selling pressure from whale investors.

Overall, ongoing institutional developments and technical indicators suggest a positive outlook for XRP, but market participants should monitor key resistance levels and whale activity closely.
