How to use Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec

Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec: A Complete Guide

The Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec are an integral part of the weapon upgrade system. These kits allow players to upgrade weapons found on the map, making them an excellent choice for those who don’t have access to drop firearms early in the game. While Redsec lets gamers create their preferred custom loadouts, the on-ground loot—including Gunsmith Kits—provides a convenient way to survive the early stages of a Battle Royale match.

What Are Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec?

Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec do not have fixed spawn points and appear in random locations. Typically, you can find these kits inside loot crates scattered across buildings on the map. The orange weapon crates especially have a higher chance of containing a Gunsmith Kit. Because their spawn is random, you’ll need to rely on luck — so make sure to open every crate you come across to increase your chances of securing one.

Once you acquire a Gunsmith Kit, you can either use it immediately if you have a compatible weapon or store it in your inventory. Alternatively, you can also share the kit with your teammates.

How to Upgrade Weapons Using Gunsmith Kits in Battlefield Redsec

To use a Gunsmith Kit, you must have a compatible weapon. Battlefield Redsec offers different types of kits, each designed for specific weapon categories—for example, PDW Kits are compatible with SMGs, while MG Kits are meant for LMGs.

Once you have both the compatible weapon and the corresponding Gunsmith Kit, upgrading is simple:

  • Hold the interact button to open the upgrade menu.
  • Select one of the two available attachments offered by the kit.

Applying an attachment will increase the weapon’s rarity and enhance its performance. The types of attachments you receive depend on your weapon’s current rarity:

  • Common weapons usually yield basic scope attachments.
  • Higher-rarity weapons unlock better attachments that significantly improve your weapon’s capabilities.

If you want to maximize your arsenal’s potential, keep scavenging for more Gunsmith Kits throughout the match.

Final Thoughts

Gunsmith Kits are a valuable resource in Battlefield Redsec, especially for players who might not have access to high-tier weapons early on. By understanding how and where to find these kits and how to apply their attachments effectively, you can gain a substantial advantage in the fast-paced Battle Royale environment.

### Remember Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse?

A colleague in the newsroom mentioned the name yesterday, and although I hadn’t thought about it in decades, the smell instantly came back to me. Also, the talking Christmas tree.

### NIH Says There Are No Banned Words. Hundreds of Grants Were Changed Anyway.

There’s no formal list of banned words or phrases at the NIH, officials say. And yet, researchers changed the titles of more than 700 multi-year grants from 2024 to 2025, according to an analysis by former agency leader Jeremy Berg.

The vast majority of those edits involved removing words like “equity” and “disparities” that denote an area of study clearly and consistently condemned by the Trump administration. Such compromises can alter the course of a project and the questions scientists address.

STAT’s Anil Oza spoke with nine current and former NIH officials, as well as five outside researchers, who described the often demoralizing and ambiguous process.

“What is infuriating about it is the fact that we cannot access the ground truth. There is no ground truth,” one NIH program officer said. “Was it necessary to censor this person’s work? I don’t know.”

For another sense of the stakes: Anil told me that he reached out to 150 outside researchers to find five who would speak to him, “which I think shows the fear people have about losing their funding,” he said in a DM.

### Texas Lawsuit Targets Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) filed a lawsuit yesterday accusing Tylenol’s makers of deceptively marketing the drug to pregnant mothers and asserting unproven claims linking its main ingredient, acetaminophen, to autism risk.

The suit alleges that the companies violated Texas consumer protection laws by hiding the danger that acetaminophen posed to fetuses and young children — again, unproven.

Texas also alleges that Johnson & Johnson fraudulently transferred liabilities arising from Tylenol to Kenvue to shield assets against lawsuits.

The suit was filed in rural Panola County and requests a jury trial in the Republican-leaning East Texas county of about 23,000 people.

### The Surprising Impact of Organ Donation Opt-Out Policies

Many countries have adopted an opt-out approach to organ donation, where every eligible person is a donor after death unless they choose to opt out. This policy has been shown to increase both registration rates for deceased organ donation and actual donations made by deceased donors.

However, a study published yesterday in *PNAS Nexus* found that overall, countries can still be left undersupplied using this strategy because fewer people become living organ donors.

Researchers analyzed data from 24 countries that implemented opt-out policies between 2000 and 2023. The results showed a 7% increase in deceased donors but a significant 29% drop in living donors overall, driven by a reduction in altruistic donations (organs donated to non-family members).

The researchers believe this is due to a community assumption that the opt-out policy has eradicated any previous organ shortage. Clearer communication about the effectiveness of the strategy, and the continuing need for living donors, may be the best way forward, the authors conclude.

### What Are Those Weight Loss Drugs Called, Again?

On a recent weekday, STAT’s Alex Hogan went to the epicenter of biotech: Kendall Square in Cambridge, Mass. When he asked industry workers on their lunch breaks what those blockbuster weight loss drugs are called, most said the same thing: Ozempic.

But of course, that’s not technically the generic name for GLP-1 medications.

In Alex’s latest video for his Status Report series, he explores the possibility that Ozempic could someday lose its trademark if the name becomes the generic term for an entire category of product — think: Dumpster, aspirin, thermos.

“If you’re a trademark lawyer, you have this conflicting instinct,” law professor Robin Feldman told Alex. “You want the name to be on the tip of people’s tongues so they buy it without inciting ‘genericide,’ as it’s called.”

Watch the video now. It’s a fascinating topic, and Feldman provides great insight, including why genericide is less common in the pharmaceutical space. On top of that, you’ll also get to see Alex shred on some (name brand!) Rollerblade inline skates.

### The Wrong Name for a Huge Problem?

In 2021 — when everything I knew about AI chatbots came from Vauhini Vara’s brilliant, prescient personal essay in *The Believer* — Valerie Black was a Ph.D. student researching how people use chatbots for help coping with suicidal thoughts.

Black argued then that it wasn’t necessarily crazy or unusual for people to do so, highlighting how few outlets exist to discuss suicidal ideation.

But these days, the language of insanity is exactly how many describe society-level problems with chatbots. The bots hallucinate, while people report AI psychosis.

For example, “the term AI psychosis shifts focus away from misinformation as an addressable issue, implying that the problem is something inherent to AI or the user’s psyche,” Black writes.

Read more on what Black sees as the bait-and-switch strategy of large language model (LLM) companies navigating these discussions.

In a related First Opinion essay published today, two researchers and clinicians argue that doctors need to start asking patients about chatbot use.

Man held in death of 8-year-old Sophia Mason released from jail after plea deal

A man charged with murdering Sophia Mason, the 8-year-old Hayward girl whose gruesome death nearly four years ago highlighted numerous failings in Alameda County’s child safety net, accepted a plea deal earlier this month and was released from jail.

Dhante Jackson was released from Merced County jail on Oct. 6 after pleading guilty to an accessory charge in Sophia’s death, his attorney and the Merced County District Attorney’s Office confirmed this week. His release was a result of having spent nearly three years in jail—nearly two years longer than the maximum sentence to which he pleaded guilty, according to his attorney.

The resolution of Jackson’s case leaves Sophia’s mother, Samantha Johnson, as the lone person still facing murder and child abuse charges in the girl’s death.

On Tuesday, Jackson’s attorney criticized Merced County prosecutors and Merced’s police force for their investigation and their alleged reliance on Johnson’s statements, suggesting “they just took her word for it.”

Todd Melnik, Jackson’s attorney, said he undertook a “painstaking” investigation to prove Jackson’s innocence on the murder charge. His efforts included pulling license plate reader data, reviewing Bay Area toll records, and administering a polygraph test to Jackson.

“Justice was clearly done, but it was justice delayed,” said Melnik, whose previous work to exonerate a murder suspect was highlighted in the 2017 Netflix documentary *Long Shot*. “Dhante never should have been arrested.”

In March 2022, Sophia’s body was found decomposing in the bathtub of a Merced house after her relatives in Hayward—where she had spent much of her life—grew concerned about her well-being. The girl had been dead for at least a month before her body was discovered. She appeared extremely malnourished at the time of her death, which the Merced County coroner’s office ruled a homicide.

Police records show that Johnson, Sophia’s mother, had previously told authorities that Sophia was punished by being made to stay in a metal shed in their backyard. She also admitted to burning Sophia’s leg with a hot spoon as discipline and choking her on at least one occasion.

Johnson told investigators that she had removed Sophia from the shed after noticing the girl had “feces on her” and needed a shower. At one point, there was a “thud” in the bathroom, but Johnson did not investigate because Jackson said the girl wanted to be left alone, according to a police report.

The next day, Johnson assumed that Sophia had run away because the back sliding door was open. She did not notify authorities or ask for help looking for her daughter.

Subsequent investigations by the Bay Area News Group uncovered deep deficiencies in the response by the Alameda County Department of Children and Family Services to repeated concerns about Sophia’s well-being during the last 18 months of her life. County social workers appeared to repeatedly ignore evidence of danger under the mother’s care and failed to promptly report allegations of abuse to law enforcement.

Alameda County had jurisdiction over the case because Sophia lived most of her life in Hayward. The revelations underscored systemic issues within Alameda County’s child welfare agency regarding how quickly employees responded to reports of child abuse and neglect.

These concerns remain unresolved. Just last month, California State Auditor Grant Parks issued a report claiming the county agency failed to meet state deadlines to investigate alleged child abuse and provide necessary physical and mental health care.

In May 2023, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors commissioned an inquiry into the handling of Sophia’s case. However, nearly two and a half years later, the outcome of that investigation and any formal findings have not been announced.

Sophia’s grandmother filed a lawsuit against the county and multiple social workers involved in Sophia’s case, alleging violations of more than a dozen state child welfare regulations during the last 14 months of the girl’s life, along with falsification of records to cover up their failures.

In an interview Tuesday, Sophia’s aunt, Emerald Johnson, criticized the outcome of Jackson’s case, expressing she was “disappointed and disgusted,” and likened the resolution to “a slap in the face.” Emerald had called Alameda County’s child welfare agency multiple times while Sophia was still alive to raise concerns about the girl’s wellbeing under Jackson and Samantha Johnson’s care.

Jackson’s plea deal this month has reopened painful wounds regarding how Sophia’s case was handled.

“I feel like she was failed while she was alive, and now she’s being failed again in her death,” Emerald Johnson said.

Merced police quickly named Jackson as a suspect alongside Samantha Johnson—his girlfriend—after discovering Sophia’s body in their home. Authorities arrested Samantha Johnson swiftly; however, a manhunt for Jackson stretched across the Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California.

Jackson was arrested in September 2022 following an extensive investigation, which included executing over 20 search warrants—often focusing on cell phone data—and spending hundreds of hours analyzing forensic information.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta personally announced Jackson’s capture at a press conference, expressing his outrage.

“This case left me damn angry that a girl had been subjected to so much abuse,” Bonta said.

“We shouldn’t be here; little Sophia should still be alive today. She should be playing. She should be learning. She should be growing up. She should be pursuing and chasing her dreams,” he added.

“Those accused of her murder must pay a steep price for their abhorrent crimes,” Bonta concluded.

The criminal proceedings against Jackson and Samantha Johnson have dragged on for years, with Jackson cycling through multiple attorneys and questions arising regarding Samantha Johnson’s mental wellbeing. Neither defendant has faced a preliminary hearing, where a judge determines if sufficient evidence exists to send the case to trial.

Monkeys escape from overturned truck on Mississippi highway

**Monkeys Escape After Truck Overturns on Mississippi Highway**

*HEIDELBERG, Miss. (AP)* — Monkeys being transported on a Mississippi highway escaped captivity Tuesday after the truck carrying them overturned, according to law enforcement officials.

All but one of the escaped monkeys were killed, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post, warning that the monkeys were “aggressive.” It remains unclear how many monkeys were originally in the truck.

The truck was carrying Rhesus monkeys, which typically weigh around 16 pounds (7.7 kilograms) and are among the most medically studied animals on the planet. The monkeys were being housed at the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, an institution that routinely provides primates to scientific research organizations.

In a statement, Tulane University clarified that the monkeys do not belong to the university, nor were they being transported by the university. Details about the ownership of the monkeys, who was transporting them, and their intended destination have not been disclosed.

Video footage shows monkeys crawling through tall grass on the side of Interstate 59 just north of Heidelberg, Mississippi. Wooden crates labeled “live animals” were found crumpled and scattered around the crash site.

Initially, the sheriff’s department stated that the monkeys were carrying diseases including herpes, but Tulane University later countered in a statement that the monkeys “have not been exposed to any infectious agent.” The sheriff’s department noted that the truck driver informed law enforcement that the monkeys were dangerous and required handling with personal protective equipment.

Tulane University said it is cooperating with law enforcement authorities. Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries was also on the scene.

The crash occurred approximately 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the state capital, Jackson. The cause of the truck overturn remains unknown.
