Urvashi Rautela appears before ED in illegal betting app case

**Urvashi Rautela Appears Before ED in Illegal Betting App Case**

*By Isha Sharma | Sep 30, 2025 | 12:01 pm*

Bollywood actor Urvashi Rautela appeared at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office on Tuesday after being summoned as part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal betting app, 1xBet. The probe centers around a money laundering case linked to the betting platform.

Earlier, TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty was also summoned by the ED, which believes both actresses have connections to 1xBet through brand endorsements.

### Investigation into Illegal Betting Platforms and Celebrity Promoters

The ED’s inquiry into 1xBet is part of a broader crackdown on illegal betting platforms and their celebrity promoters. Several high-profile individuals, including cricketers Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, have already been summoned in relation to the investigation.

Urvashi Rautela’s statements will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), according to reports from PTI.

### Proceedings Against Actors Involved in Betting Promotions

In May, Telangana Police booked 25 actors, including Rana Daggubati and Prakash Raj, for allegedly promoting betting platforms. Both actors have denied any wrongdoing, stating they only endorsed platforms legal in regions permitting online skill-based games.

Other celebrities named in the case include Manchu Lakshmi, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagalla, and TV anchor Srimukhi.

Earlier this year, actress Kangana Ranaut publicly criticized celebrities for endorsing betting apps, revealing that she had turned down several lucrative offers to promote such platforms.

The investigation continues as authorities aim to crack down on illegal betting and money laundering activities involving prominent figures from the entertainment and sports industries.

Indore News: IET Seniors Forced Juniors To Create Fake Social Media Accounts, Vandalise Hostel

**Senior Students at IET Allegedly Coerce Juniors into Posting Defamatory Content and Vandalism**

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a shocking revelation, senior students at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) have allegedly forced their juniors to create fake social media accounts and post defamatory content against the institute and Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV).

According to reports, the juniors were also compelled to vandalise hostel property, including CCTV cameras and DVRs.

The institute’s Anti-Ragging Committee initiated an investigation following complaints of alleged ragging. Preliminary findings suggest that final-year students coerced juniors into creating fake Instagram, X, and Facebook accounts. The juniors were instructed to make two to three posts daily targeting the institution.

Sources reveal that the seniors summoned the juniors to a café outside the campus, where they threatened them and issued strict instructions via a WhatsApp group. These instructions detailed the juniors’ conduct in the hostel as well as the content that needed to be posted online.

During the inquiry, mobile phone checks uncovered chat records confirming the seniors’ orders. The committee has identified final-year students Adarsh Makwana, Aditya Sharma, Aman Patel, and Vivek Sharma as the prime accused in this matter.

The Anti-Ragging Committee has recommended recovering damages from the juniors who carried out the vandalism. Meanwhile, the university has decided to file a formal complaint at Bhawarkuan police station over attempts to malign the institution’s reputation.

Police are currently conducting a detailed probe into the case. Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.

‘Bail Is Rule, Jail An Exception’: Thane Sessions Court Grants Bail To Man Booked In 10 Cases

**Thane Sessions Court Grants Bail to Man Accused in Multiple Criminal Cases**

The Thane Sessions Court has granted bail to a man allegedly accused in 10 criminal cases registered across Thane, Mumbai, and Pune. The court held that the mere registration of multiple offences does not automatically disqualify an accused from seeking bail.

### Court’s Observation

The court observed that the investigating officer’s claim that the accused was a threat to society because he was found holding a sickle was not sufficient grounds to deny bail.

> “Considering the material placed on record and citations supra, it is noted that the investigating officer has recovered a sickle from the hands of the accused by showing him as the leader of an organised crime syndicate. In the investigation, it also transpired that the accused has given threats to the public by brandishing the said sickle. However, he has neither assaulted the complainant nor robbed the alleged amount of Rs 4,500 from the shop’s cash box. He has not played an aggravated role in the alleged crime… Mere registration of said crimes would not disentitle him to get the relief of bail in the absence of incriminating evidence against him,” the court said in its order.

### Principle of Bail Reiterated

The court emphasised the legal principle that **“bail is the rule and jail an exception,”** underscoring that an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

### Background of the Case

The bail order pertains to a case filed by complainant Neelkumar Divakar, who alleged that on October 21, 2024, after 9 p.m., the accused, Akshay Jadekar, approached his pan stall demanding a cigarette. When Divakar asked him to clear earlier dues, Jadekar allegedly assaulted him with the help of his associates using fists and kicks, and forcibly took Rs 4,500 from the cash box while brandishing a sickle.

One of Jadekar’s associates is also accused of threatening the complainant with a pair of scissors.

### Arrest and Charges

Following the incident, Jadekar and his associates were arrested. The police invoked provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against them after obtaining the necessary approvals.

### Defence by the Accused

Akshay Jadekar, who has been in custody since his arrest on October 24, 2024, maintained his innocence. He claimed to be falsely implicated and denied assaulting the complainant with any weapon.

Jadekar argued that the investigation was complete, the charge sheet had been filed, and there was no risk of him absconding or tampering with evidence if released on bail.

### Prosecution’s Argument

The prosecution opposed the bail plea, contending that Jadekar was the leader of an organised crime syndicate. They argued that releasing him could lead to a repetition of similar offences.

### Court’s Final Decision

Rejecting the prosecution’s apprehensions, the court found no reasonable grounds to believe that Jadekar would commit similar crimes if released.

The court noted that the complainant’s injuries were simple in nature and highlighted that the accused had a fixed place of residence.

One dead and nine injured in shooting and fire at Michigan church, say police

A gunman opened fire inside a Michigan church during Sunday services before apparently setting the building ablaze, killing at least one person and injuring nine, authorities said. Police later shot the suspect.

Hundreds of people were inside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township when a 40-year-old man rammed his vehicle into the front door. He then exited the vehicle and started shooting, Police Chief William Renye told reporters.

The suspect is believed to have set the church on fire, Mr. Renye added. Flames and smoke were visible for hours before the blaze was finally extinguished. First responders have since been sifting through the wreckage.

“We do believe we will find some additional victims once we find the area where the fire was,” Mr. Renye said.

Scott Bennett, supervisor of Grand Blanc Township, described the shooting and fire as a tragedy that no one wants to encounter.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting or the fire.

The church, surrounded by a parking lot and a large lawn, is located near residential areas and a Jehovah’s Witness church.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences in a statement, saying, “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.”

The shooting occurred the morning after Russell M. Nelson, the oldest-ever president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away at the age of 101. The next president of the church, widely known as the Mormon church, is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, following church protocol.

Crimes Against Women In Mumbai Rise Nearly By 12% In 2025, Raising Alarms Over Safety

Mumbai’s Long-Standing Slogan of Being a “Safe City” Under Question as Crimes Against Women Rise

Mumbai, often hailed as a “Safe City,” is facing growing concerns over women’s safety as the latest data from the Mumbai Police reveals a worrying increase in crimes against women. The statistics from the first seven months of 2025 show a nearly 12% rise compared to the same period last year, painting a starkly different picture from the city’s longstanding reputation.

Sharp Rise in Rape, Kidnapping, and Molestation Cases

According to police reports, 353 rape cases have been registered so far this year, up from 317 in 2024—an 11% increase. Impressively, investigations in 346 of these cases have already been completed, reflecting police efficiency in handling such sensitive matters. However, the growing number of incidents remains alarming.

Kidnapping cases involving women have surged by 18%, rising to 822 from 697 last year. Molestation cases have also seen a significant jump, climbing to 515 from 384 in 2024. These figures underscore the increasing threats women face in public spaces across the city.

Persistent Challenges: POCSO, Harassment, and Domestic Abuse

Cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act continue to be at troubling levels. Additionally, reports of abetment to suicide and marital cruelty stood at 271, a slight decline from 289 last year but still a serious concern.

Mental harassment cases have also risen, with 268 incidents reported compared to fewer cases in the previous year. These numbers highlight ongoing challenges surrounding domestic abuse and psychological violence.

Acid Attacks and Dowry Deaths Remain Disturbing Issues

Mumbai has recorded five acid attack cases and five dowry deaths so far in 2025. While these figures are consistent with previous years, they emphasize the persistence of grave social evils that continue to menace the city’s women.

Overall Surge Despite Strong Police Response

In total, 3,920 cases of crimes against women were recorded till July 2025, compared to 3,500 during the same period last year. Although the police have completed investigations in nearly 94% of these cases, the overall rise in crimes indicates that enforcement alone is insufficient to curb the deep-rooted crisis.

A Social and Administrative Challenge

The steady increase in crimes against women in a metropolis like Mumbai highlights a complex social and administrative challenge. While the police deserve credit for their swift and thorough investigations, the broader issue remains society’s mindset towards women’s safety.

Experts emphasize the urgent need for the government, law enforcement agencies, and civil society to collaborate and implement stronger, more effective, and sensitive policies. Only through such collective efforts can the city hope to truly ensure the safety and security of its women residents.

‘Hand for dad…’: Man confesses on TV about killing parents

**Man Confesses on TV to Killing His Parents and Burying Them in Backyard**

*By Snehil Singh | September 27, 2025, 04:27 PM*

A 53-year-old man from Albany, New York, has made a shocking confession on live television, admitting to killing his parents and burying their bodies in the backyard of their family home.

Lorenz Kraus revealed the grim details during an interview with local TV station WRGB. He confessed to murdering his parents, Franz and Theresia Kraus, eight years ago, claiming that he did it out of concern for their suffering.

**Details of the Confession**

In the interview, Kraus explained how he suffocated both of his parents—using his hand to suffocate his father and a rope for his mother. After the killings, he kept their bodies for three days before burying them in the backyard.

“I did my duty to my parents. My concern for their misery was paramount,” Kraus stated during the interview.

**Health Issues and Initial Investigation**

Kraus cited his mother’s injury from a fall and his father’s cataract surgery as reasons for their ongoing suffering, which influenced his decision.

Earlier this year, authorities began investigating Kraus for alleged financial crimes after receiving a tip in May. The Social Security Administration had requested the police to check on the Kraus parents, as they continued to collect benefits despite having been missing for some time.

**Background and Legal Proceedings**

Lorenz Kraus is a well-educated individual. He graduated as valedictorian from Siena University in 1994 with a degree in political science and later earned an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Following his televised confession, Kraus was arrested outside the WRGB studio. He now faces two counts of murder and concealing a corpse. However, during his court appearance on Friday, he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
