NYC sidewalk shed that earned ‘worst’ award taken down after nearly 20 years – and locals are throwing a ‘party’

The owner of an Upper West Side apartment building finally removed its longtime sidewalk shed Monday after nearly two decades, and neighbors are shedding no tears.

The infamous green blight at 51 West 86th St. was even awarded the title of the Worst Sidewalk Shed on the West Side at Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assemblymember Micah Lasher’s inaugural “Sheddie Awards” this spring.

“It’s been up for a very long time, so the building’s very excited,” resident Omet Hit told The Post. The 31-year-old tech worker added, “There’s so much of it,” referring to the scaffolding that covers much of the Upper West Side. “Then it’s like a whole new world when it’s finally gone.”

“Now it’s so exciting. It’s so beautiful, it’s so open,” Hit said. “It’s like a new breath of fresh air. We had champagne already… but I think there’s going to be a party.”

“We’re organizing a big party,” confirmed another building resident who declined to share her name. “It’s a disease in this city—scaffolding—and there’s more of it there [across the street]; ours was up the longest.”

An 11-year resident of the building added, “I was actually gone for the Jewish holidays for a full month, and I had to come around again because I just didn’t recognize the building. It’s great. I think everybody’s going to be happier, and it’s nice and clean.”

The scaffolding and netting that had covered the area since 2020 came down four months ago, the West Side Rag first reported. The building’s notorious shed was erected in 2006. It is owned by Weinreb Management, which did not return a request for comment on Thursday.

In 2022, Weinreb Management was sued by the city for hundreds of building violations, including fire safety issues and “failing to correct hazardous facade defects,” following a tragic fire at another Weinreb-owned building in the Bronx that killed 17 residents.

According to the lawsuit, “Defendants have displayed a pattern of failing to correct hazardous façade defects at their buildings: rather than taking corrective action, Defendants have allowed their buildings to deteriorate to the point where they pose an imminent threat to the health and safety of the tenants and the public.”

The 51 West 86th St. building was issued two violations cited in the 2022 lawsuit, including faulty sprinklers and alarm systems, as well as missing fire extinguishers.

This litigation was part of the city’s Long Standing Sheds program, which sought to compel owner Jacob Weinreb “to make needed repairs across 11 of their buildings, several of which had long-standing sidewalk sheds,” a Department of Buildings (DOB) representative told The Post.

Weinreb Management has been “making progress on these repairs and have already resolved hundreds of open violations across their portfolio of buildings,” the DOB confirmed, including the façade repairs finally made to 51 West 86th St.

“Through an affirmative litigation case brought by our partners at the Law Department, we were able to compel the owners of this property to finally make needed façade repairs and return the valuable sidewalk space in front of the building back to the public,” said Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo.

Longtime resident Ellen expressed mixed emotions: “Everybody’s so happy, and everybody is so mad that it took this long. I’m very grateful that the city sued because that’s what really got things going… and after that, I think Weinreb Management company had no choice but to respond, obviously, and they did. I hope it’s a model.”

The oldest current sidewalk sheds in New York City date back to 2010 and can be found at a pair of apartment buildings in Yorkville and the East Village, according to a Post analysis of Buildings records. They are part of 10 buildings across the city that still have scaffolding at least a decade old.

“It’s [scaffolding] clearly out of hand,” added the unnamed 11-year resident of 51 West 86th St. “The city’s beautiful, and I hope we can see more of it.”

Minnehaha County Rebel Republicans going to try hold meeting to censure chair over censure

It’s getting kind of hard to figure out who is being censured by the Minnehaha County Republican Party without a censure scorecard.

In the latest development, the vice chair and the committeewoman are trying to hold an unauthorized meeting to sanction the chair, Korry Petterson, over his sanctioning of Senator Tom Pischke for being a dirtbag to people on Facebook.

Here is the notice they sent out:

I find it hard to believe that people don’t want to get involved in politics when they read about this kind of stuff. (That was sarcasm.)

Actually, this is a clown car. Except it’s South Dakota’s largest county, and there are more people—so they need a clown bus.

Stay tuned.

A Mosaic Elk at Prairie Creek

Those who wander into the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park Visitor Center are in for a unique encounter—not with a live Roosevelt elk, as typically found in nearby Elk Prairie, but with a remarkable glass-encrusted bull elk sculpture created by Jennifer a’Midi, a local Southern Humboldt mosaic artist.

Weighing 225 pounds and life-sized, the Roosevelt elk sculpture features museum-quality antlers and is covered from head to tail with thousands of hand-cut pieces of glass. These glass pieces form an intricate mosaic depicting scenes of 138 unique habitat types, along with local plants, animals, and fungi, including seven banana slugs and a California Condor.

“Redwood National and State Parks is honored to host a’Midi’s custom-made artwork, and we are thrilled to connect visitors to creative experiences in the parks, which provide inspiration and connection to nature,” said Shelana deSilva, Deputy District Superintendent, during the sculpture’s unveiling on September 13.

The Yurok Tribal Council will soon vote on a Yurok name for the mosaic elk, which State Parks will then feature on an accompanying plaque. The unveiling event, hosted by California State Parks North Coast Redwoods, Redwood Parks Conservancy, and Redwood National and State Parks, concluded with a scavenger hunt for 22 of a’Midi’s mosaic rocks.

This Prairie Creek mosaic elk is the fourth mosaic art sculpture that a’Midi has gifted to a North Coast Redwoods District Park unit. In 2023, she donated her “Mushroom Connection” mosaic, featuring mushrooms and a river scene with otters and salmonids, to the historic Richardson Grove Lodge during Richardson Grove State Park’s Centennial celebration. That same year, she gifted a mosaic otter named “Tce yac” to the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center.

More recently, in 2024, a’Midi presented her giant mushroom mosaic titled “Midnight”—named after the fungi Entoloma medianoxa—to the Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park Visitor Center.

When asked what motivates her to create these painstaking mosaic works and generously donate them to local California State Parks, a’Midi shared, “I have a deep passion for the redwoods and protecting them, so I share my art with the public to hopefully inspire conservation and protection of our forests and all the creatures within.”

She added a favorite quote from Pablo Picasso: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

After completing the mosaic for Grizzly Creek State Park, a’Midi felt inspired to create mosaic pieces for as many visitor centers as she could. “Every time I’ve visited Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, I see the beautiful elk, so I proposed gifting a mosaic elk to State Parks District Superintendent Victor Bjelajac, and he approved my idea,” she said.

“Jennifer’s attention to detail and species representation is spectacular in her art, and she’s performing a public service at our visitor centers with her donations,” Bjelajac commented.

To begin the project, a’Midi ordered a museum-quality fiberglass and resin sculpture from Texas, then carefully selected scenes from California’s North Coast to incorporate. “I love to draw, so I created a Prairie Side and an Ocean Side scene on each side of the elk to represent Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park,” she explained.

She enjoyed researching the flora, fauna, and fungi native to the Prairie Creek area, choosing those she could depict recognizably in mosaic. The California Condor holds special significance for her, as she has followed their restoration efforts through the Yurok Tribe’s work. “It’s amazing, and I wanted to honor that work,” she said.

“I hope Prairie Creek visitors will be inspired when they see my mosaic elk—and I hope they can find all seven banana slugs hidden within the artwork,” a’Midi shared.

Regarding the biggest challenge in making life forms recognizable in mosaic, a’Midi noted, “Covering any 3D object with flat pieces of glass is a challenge. Curved surfaces require smaller cuts so the glass lays as flat as possible. Small crevices are difficult to get the glass into. Grouting is the most physical part. The best moment was wiping the grout off and seeing my vision become this amazing creation.”

The project took just over a year to complete. “I’m not sure about the total hours, but I worked on it every day, or was researching or engineering it.”

The finished mosaic elk, dubbed the “Great Elk Migration,” required six people to carry it out of a’Midi’s home to a waiting trailer. A convoy of four vehicles then followed the sculpture north to the Prairie Creek Visitor Center, where it was installed indoors in its permanent, protected location.

Looking ahead, a’Midi revealed that her next mosaic animal project will be a black bear for Sue-meg State Park Visitor Center (formerly Patrick’s Point State Park). Bjelajac joked that after completing her mosaic bear, a’Midi would have “only 275 more California State Parks to go.”

Navi Mumbai Tragedy: 2 Men Killed As Tempo Hits Negligently Parked Dumper On Uran–Belapur Road; Case Registered Against Driver

**Two Men Killed as Speeding Tempo Collides with Negligently Parked Dumper on Uran–Belapur Road**

*Navi Mumbai, Early Wednesday Morning* — Tragedy struck on the Uran–Belapur Road near Ulwe in the early hours of Wednesday when a speeding Eicher tempo crashed into a stationary dumper parked carelessly by the roadside. Both men inside the tempo were killed on the spot.

**Victims Identified**

The deceased have been identified as Umesh Sadanand Utekar (45), the tempo driver, and his cleaner, Suyog Rajendra Pawar (25). According to police reports, the duo had started their journey from Ratnagiri late Tuesday night, carrying goods destined for Bhiwandi.

**Details of the Accident**

Around 4:45 a.m., as their vehicle approached the Ulwe bridge stretch, the tempo suddenly collided with the dumper that was parked along the roadside. An Ulwe police officer explained, “The dumper had been parked negligently outside the barricaded area. Due to low visibility at dawn and the speed of the tempo, the driver failed to notice it and collided directly.”

**Rescue Efforts**

The impact was so severe that the cabin of the tempo was crushed, trapping both men inside. Fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene and, after carefully cutting open the mangled vehicle, recovered the victims’ bodies.

**Negligent Parking Cited**

Preliminary investigations revealed that the dumper was part of ongoing road repair work but was not parked within the designated barricaded area. This violation created a significant safety hazard for other motorists.

A senior Ulwe police official stated, “This accident occurred solely because of the negligent parking of the dumper. We have booked the driver for causing death due to negligence.”

**Investigation Underway**

The dumper driver was taken into custody, served a notice, and later released pending further investigation.
