IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 1 Recap

Like Pennywise himself, director Andy Muschietti knows how to make an entrance. Across both *IT* (2017) and *IT: Chapter Two* (2019), Bill Skarsgård’s demonic entity occasionally slithers into frame, slowly and eerily, through the cracks of what’s polite and what’s plausible, before bursting like a hideous geyser to terrify some helpless child. Muschietti’s edge as a director shined in his Pennywise setpieces — the lesser quality of *Chapter Two* notwithstanding. (Even still: the scene between Jessica Chastain and Joan Gregson as Mrs. Kersh? Paralyzing.)

Because maximizing shareholder value is paramount these days, nothing stays in the dark forever. And so, we return to Muschietti’s interpretation of Stephen King’s literary tome with *IT: Welcome to Derry*, a new HBO series helmed by Muschietti along with his producing partner and sister Barbara Muschietti, and screenwriter Jason Fuchs.

Cynical as we ought to be about *Welcome to Derry* as yet another instance of a big studio leveraging its IP library for quarterly growth, it feels right that Muschietti still sits in control. It’s for the better that this prequel feels like an extension of the duology rather than a prolonged prologue.

This is still Derry, Maine as seen in those movies, where nostalgic Americana hides all of its cruelty beneath a veneer of politeness. Handsome production design and muscular sequences of trauma-inducing terror were the markers of Muschietti’s films, and it’s thrilling to see more of that in the first episode of *Welcome to Derry*.

### Here’s What Went Down in “The Pilot” of *IT: Welcome to Derry*, Directed by Andy Muschietti

In the first episode, we meet the main kids of *IT: Welcome to Derry*. But not all of them survive the premiere.

### Welcome (Back) to Derry

It’s simply not *IT* if the plot isn’t also a coming-of-age tale. Adolescents, caught between childhood and adulthood, are at an age where quite literally no one understands them. They don’t even really know themselves. It’s no wonder Pennywise likes to feed on them. They reek of fear — fresh meat to a hungry lion.

We open with Matty (Miles Eckhardt), a stunted adolescent boy who, as far as we can infer, is just trying to escape a bad home environment. Picked up on the road by another family on their way to Portland (or so they claim), Matty soon realizes whose clutches he’s actually trapped in.

The violent, gruesome “birth” of a demonic baby (The Crimson King, is that you?) is just the beginning of a long, long nightmare for poor Matty. And yet, more for HBO Sunday nights, but alas. As far as everyone else in Derry knows, Matty is dead. But his “friends”—associates, really—suspect otherwise.

At school, nerdy outcasts Teddy (Mikkal Karim-Fidler), who in another life might froth at the mouth over chemtrails, and Fred (Jack Molloy Legault), a realist who gets all his fanciful fixes from comic books, struggle to fit in. Meanwhile, Lilly (Clara Stack), a social pariah haunted by her father’s freakish death at a pickle factory, struggles to forgive herself for hurting Matty’s feelings right before his disappearance.

It isn’t long before Lilly hears from Matty—out of her bathroom pipes (a recurring motif in this saga). Teddy and Fred aren’t convinced until Teddy gets a bizarre late-night visit from Pennywise, in the form of lampshades made of screaming human flesh.

This is all preceded by a scene depicting Shabbat, where Teddy’s frustrated father lectures him on the horrors Jews suffered in the Holocaust, and ends his point by tossing out his copy of *The Flash #123* — an issue that introduced the multiverse to comic books. Is Muschietti foreshadowing a Stephen King multiverse? Or is this a playful nod to Muschietti’s colossal 2023 bomb for Warner-owned DC? (By the way, a pristine copy of that comic might net you about $13,000.)

The kids soon link up with Ronnie (Amanda Christine), another neighborhood kid whose father works at the local movie theater and is one of the few people to last see Matty alive. Putting on *The Music Man* (the movie Matty saw, from which Lilly heard the music coming through her pipes), the kids find Matty in the movie.

But is it really Matty?

Remember, Pennywise feeds on fear. In taking the form of Matty and reminding them all how they collectively treated him, Pennywise instills fear for him to feed from. Basically, he’s preparing dinner, and the theater has become his kitchen.

After Matty digs his face into a mysterious baby wrapped in a yellow blanket, his grin turns sinister — as sharp as a knife. It’s then that *IT* veterans should recall this isn’t the first time they’ve seen Pennywise on a screen before.

Thus begins several minutes of pure, pants-shitting terror.

With diegetic lighting turning the whole place blood red, the demon baby that killed (or did it?) Matty now comes after the kids, sending them screaming and running with no place to hide. Just when you think the action lulls, Muschietti snaps things into focus.

Pennywise straight-up rips apart Teddy, his blood and guts spilling over the popcorn on the floor, before making mincemeat of the other kids off-screen. The only survivors are Ronnie and Lilly, who unknowingly holds the severed hand of Teddy’s little sister.

If *Welcome to Derry* seemed confused about who its main character is at first, it makes it clear by the bitter end whose story it’s really telling. But Lilly isn’t the only one whose story matters.

### “A Little Taste of Normal”

*IT* might be a story preoccupied with youth, but it isn’t exclusively about kids. Standing in contrast to the show’s small and already dwindling ensemble of children is its other major character: Major Leroy Hanlon, played by Jovan Adepo.

Fresh from the Korean War, Major Hanlon is assigned to a base in Derry, Maine — the “tip of the spear” against Russia in a war that’s definitely going to happen.

But despite his accolades abroad, not everyone in the Air Force is keen to salute a Black man in 1962.

In our interview with Adepo, the actor told us that *Welcome to Derry* isn’t shying away from the brutal realities of life in a racist America. For now, we’re only seeing the surface — the small indignities and gestures of disrespect, like a refusal to salute in the presence of superior command.

It surely won’t be long before we see worse, like the true colors of Hanlon’s new neighbors. As the major himself said, he’s moving his family into town, which means more Black folk living in a mostly white Maine town.

(If there’s anything we learned from this season of *Peacemaker*, it’s to look closely at the extras.)

It’s 1962, remember. Not everyone will be so welcoming.

To say nothing of Hanlon’s own fears about his newly important position.

Early in the episode, Major Hanlon passes by Special Projects — a closed-off section of the base shrouded in secrecy. Later that night, Hanlon is visited by masked men who beat him for classified specs on experimental weapons.

My first impression was that this was a test; the men would unmask to reveal Hanlon’s own superiors, testing his loyalty. But the men run off to who knows where, leaving the story unresolved. For now.

**Rep. Eric Swalwell Demands 2028 Democrat Candidates Pledge to Tear Down Trump’s Planned White House Ballroom**

United States Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) is calling on potential Democrat presidential candidates for 2028 to pledge to dismantle President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom.

On Sunday, the Democrat congressman posted on X:
“Don’t even think of seeking the Democratic nomination for president unless you pledge to take a wrecking ball to the Trump Ballroom on DAY ONE.”

Swalwell added in a comment that he would find it acceptable if the next Democrat president were to “rename it the Barack Obama Ballroom,” though the White House has not suggested any name for the space.
“But a Trump monument to corruption will not stand,” he concluded.

Swalwell is the latest Democrat to oppose the new addition to the White House, despite the project being fully funded by the president and private donors, putting no cost on American taxpayers.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt condemned the “fake outrage” over the project, noting that “nearly every single president who has lived in this beautiful White House behind me has made modernizations and renovations of their own.”

Indeed, former President Barack Obama added a basketball court while in office.

During the Obama administration, many state dinners were held on the South Lawn under a tent, requiring guests to use portable restrooms. The new 90,000-square-foot ballroom will have the capacity for approximately 650 seated guests, allowing dinners and receptions to be held indoors.

President Trump even mentioned possibly holding the inauguration in the ballroom. This may provide some extra security to high-profile individuals, compared to open-air venues like the one in Pennsylvania where Trump was shot in the ear last summer.

Most of the White House remains untouched by the new construction, including the West Wing, the Executive Residence, and both the east and west colonnades. The East Wing, which has held the First Lady’s office and other staff office spaces along with a nuclear bunker, will be expanded to accommodate the grand ballroom.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also criticized the building project, which has drawn scrutiny on her own treatment of the White House when her husband, former President Bill Clinton, left office. The couple took furniture and other “gifts” from the People’s House and ended up returning $28,000 worth of furnishings. The Clintons also reimbursed the White House an additional $86,000 for items taken.

Their daughter, Chelsea Clinton, who lived in the White House from ages 12 to 20, wrote on X:
“The erasure of the East Wing isn’t just about marble or plaster; it’s about President Trump again taking a wrecking ball to our heritage, while targeting our democracy, and the rule-of-law.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has also repeatedly criticized the project. This has drawn attention to his own state’s ongoing renovations of the Capitol building in Sacramento. The project began shortly before he entered office with an estimated cost of less than $550 million but has grown to more than $1 billion under his governance, and it is fully funded by taxpayers.

Conservatives have jokingly diagnosed those who take offense to the independently funded, $300 million ballroom with “BDS,” also known as “ballroom derangement syndrome.”

Soccer star continues heartbreaking search for lost beagle Halo in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Aaron Ramsey’s move to Mexico has taken a distressing turn off the field as he continues his search for his lost dog, Halo.

On Friday, the Wales soccer star posted a black-and-white photo on Instagram showing him hugging the beagle, accompanied by the heartfelt message: “What I’d do to hold you one last time Halo.” Ramsey has appealed for help in tracking down his beloved pet and has offered a $10,000 reward.

“Please help us find Halo, he was lost in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato,” Ramsey wrote on Instagram.

The former Arsenal, Juventus, and Cardiff midfielder moved to Mexico in July, signing a one-year contract with top-tier club Pumas, which currently sits 12th in the 18-team league.

Ramsey missed Pumas’ last match against León on Saturday as he continued the search for Halo, who went missing earlier this month after being left at a dog shelter in Dolores, a city in Guanajuato, an industrial and agricultural state located in central Mexico.

His Pumas teammates and coach understand how much the dog means to Ramsey.

“We are with him, let’s see what happens in the upcoming days,” Pumas coach Efraín Juárez said after the team’s 1-0 win against Lyon. “He has this issue, we all know what it is, with his dog, but we are there for him.”

The search continues.

“We are still searching for answers. If you see a beagle in San Ignacio, Dolores Hidalgo, please message us,” Ramsey’s wife, Colleen Ramsey, said on social media.

Ramsey recently finished the final three games of the 2024-25 season as Cardiff’s interim manager after the club was relegated from England’s League Championship to the third-tier League One.

With 86 appearances for Wales, Ramsey has been a key player, helping his country reach the Euro 2016 semifinals.

‘Moments of the Unknown’: Justin Aversano Shares Globetrotting Love Letter to Humanity

For his latest project, artist and photographer Justin Aversano—known for his acclaimed series “Twin Flames”—set out with a simple compass: love. Armed with just a camera, intuition, and an unspoken promise to document humanity across all seven continents, Aversano embarked on a remarkable journey.

The result is *“Moments of the Unknown,”* a living archive of global intimacy. This ambitious work is currently presented as an exhibition at Glitch Gallery in Marfa, Texas, coinciding with the Art Blocks Marfa Weekend this month. Additionally, a documentary screening is being held at the nearby Crowley Theater.

Decrypt had the opportunity to sit down with Aversano for an inside look at his journey, reflections, and creative process.

### From a Quiet Film to an Audio-Visual Experiment

Initially, Aversano planned the film to be a much quieter affair.
“It was mostly just gonna be no sound,” he recalls.

However, the project evolved as he traveled across continents into an audio-visual experiment. Hundreds of brief video portraits were stitched together, enhanced by soundscapes sourced from humanity’s most iconic artifact of love and hope: the “Voyager Golden Record.”

“I wanted to reintegrate that historical movement in culture and space exploration—and use it as the soundtrack for a film about cultures and continents around the world and how they’re connected,” Aversano explained.

Each location in the film resonates with its own fragment from these sounds. Voices speak in 55 different languages, and delegates from the United Nations each say one simple word: “Hello.” It all culminates with the film’s final line: **“Hello from the children of planet Earth.”**

At its core, *“Moments of the Unknown”* is about love—but not just romantic love. It encompasses family, friendship, and a sense of oneness.

“What I discovered while shooting is that love has so many forms,” Aversano shared.
“It became about unity, closeness, intimacy. The love of humanity and recognizing we are one human family.”

Rather than scouting subjects in advance, Aversano woke up each day uncertain of who he would meet. With no checklist for diversity or specific goals, he captured human encounters as they came—children, elders, strangers, twins, entire families.

Even the recurring heartbeat sounds in the soundtrack have personal significance. “That’s family,” he explained. “My dad, my sister, my brother. Moments where I felt presence and love.”

### Self-Portraits, Time Capsules, and a Nod to Twin Flames

Aversano quietly inserts himself into his projects, and *“Moments of the Unknown”* is no exception. His first appearance is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo at a barbershop in New Orleans.

“I just wanted to be a prop in her portrait,” he said.

Another self-portrait appears at Stonehenge on his birthday—an intentional callback to his earliest work, *“The Birthday Project.”* He calls it “an Easter egg,” a thread linking ten years of his artistry.

People reappear over time in his work. They age. Twins emerge, old and new. “I always run into twins,” he laughs, referencing his highly regarded *Twin Flames* series.

“A two-day boat from Argentina. Seven days there, two days back,” he shared.

Aversano shot the project two years ago and is releasing each portrait and video exactly on the same calendar day it was taken. The series began on April 8 and will conclude on April 7, 2026.

Each evening, he writes a diaristic entry about the person he met that day. He is now auctioning these daily portraits as unique, single-edition NFTs. Impressively, Aversano hasn’t missed a day.
