How much gold can Indians own? Know the law

**How Much Gold Can Indians Own? Know the Law**
*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 13, 2025, 05:48 PM*

With Dhanteras and Diwali approaching, many families are considering their gold purchases. Understanding the legal aspects of gold ownership in India is essential before making any investment.

### Historical Background
The Gold Control Act of 1968 once imposed restrictions on gold ownership in India. However, this law was repealed in 1990. Since then, there are no legal limits on how much gold a person can own, provided they can prove the legitimate source of the gold through invoices or inheritance documents.

### Limits on Seizing Gold Jewelry During Raids
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued specific guidelines for income tax officials during raids on gold holdings. According to a circular dated May 11, 1994, there are limits on the quantity of gold jewelry that cannot be seized during such raids. These limits are:

– 500 grams for married women
– 250 grams for unmarried women
– 100 grams per male member of the family, regardless of marital status

These measures are intended to protect genuine personal holdings from confiscation.

### Tax Implications on Gold
The tax treatment of gold depends on its form and the holding period:

– Physical gold, Gold Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), and other digital gold products are considered capital assets.
– If sold within 12 months of purchase, the gains are treated as short-term capital gains (STCG) and taxed according to the individual’s income tax slab (ranging from 5% to 30%).
– If held for more than 12 months, the gains qualify for long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax at a flat rate of 20% under the current tax regime, without the benefit of indexation.

### Conclusion
There is no restriction on the amount of gold an individual can own in India today. However, it is crucial to maintain proper documentation to prove the source of gold and to be aware of tax liabilities when selling gold assets. As the festive season nears, investors should make informed decisions regarding their gold purchases to stay compliant with the law.

Telangana Police seizes 499 kgs of ganja, held two

A total of 499 kg of ganja worth Rs 2.5 crore, being transported to Rajasthan in a container lorry, was seized in Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana on Monday. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the case, police said.

Based on credible information, police teams conducted vehicle checks in Sujathanagar Mandal and intercepted the lorry. Upon inspection, they recovered 96 packets of ganja, Bhadradri Kothagudem Superintendent of Police B Rohit Raju said.

The contraband was loaded in Andhra Pradesh and was being transported to Jaipur in Rajasthan, the official added. A case has been registered against four accused individuals.

‘The universe had other ideas’: They bought their dream house, but it was the cat who came back to it that made it truly feel like home

**Purrfect Timing! A One-Year Homeowner and Her Feline Queen**

One year ago, this proud new homeowner was just settling in with two kids and a promise. Once the budget bounced back, they planned to adopt a cat. But the universe clearly had other plans—and didn’t want to wait.

One night, a determined feline showed up at their door, meowing as if she already had the keys. Within seconds, she’d claimed the house, leaping from counters to cabinets like a fuzzy parkour champion.

It turns out Angel (as she’s now lovingly called) had been abandoned by the previous owner and stuck around, waiting for her true family to move in.

What began as a stowaway story quickly transformed—Angel is now the queen of the castle, complete with her own bed on the cabinets and two kitten sidekicks to rule alongside her.

From stray to spoiled, this is one glow-up story for the hiss-tory books. Sometimes, you don’t choose the cat—the cat chooses you (and your mortgage).

Beed: 72-year-old killed over property dispute, six of his family held

He died after being attacked on Saturday evening with a sickle and iron rods by his three nephews and their wives, an official from the Ambhora police station said.

“The family members had been embroiled in a boundary wall and pipeline dispute for several days. One such argument ended in a fatal attack on Devkar. He sustained serious injuries in the incident,” the official added. Devkar was rushed to the hospital in Ahilyanagar on Sunday afternoon, where he later died. His son was also assaulted during the attack. “The matter is further being investigated,” the official said, according to PTI.

The police have registered a case and arrested six people in connection with the incident. Those arrested were identified as Ramdas Devkar, Rahul Devkar, and Santosh Devkar, along with their wives Kavita Devkar, Manisha Devkar, and Lata Devkar, the news agency reported.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a 36-year-old farmer was reportedly mauled to death by a leopard in a village in Beed district, police officials said on Monday, according to PTI.

The attack occurred in the Bavi-Darewadi area of Ashti tehsil on Sunday when the victim had taken his cattle out for grazing. Rajendra Vishwanath Golhar, a resident of Bavi village, went to his farm in the morning to graze his cattle but failed to return home, an official said.

Suspecting a leopard attack, villagers alerted the forest department and local authorities, who launched a search operation. Golhar’s half-eaten body was found in the fields, confirming that he was attacked by a leopard, Range Forest Officer Amol Munde stated. The post-mortem report is awaited.

In response, police and forest authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing out alone after dark. They have also initiated measures to increase patrolling and awareness campaigns across nearly 15 surrounding villages.

WHO warns of global rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals

**WHO Warns of Global Rise in Antibiotic-Resistant Infections in Hospitals**

*By Snehil Singh | Oct 13, 2025, 04:11 PM*

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the rising prevalence of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals worldwide. According to data gathered from over 23 million bacterial infections across 104 countries, one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections was resistant to antibiotic treatments in 2023.

### Alarming Loss of Antibiotic Effectiveness

Between 2018 and 2023, more than 40% of antibiotics lost their effectiveness against common infections affecting the blood, gut, urinary tract, and sexually transmitted diseases. This growing resistance threatens the success of treatments and puts patients’ lives at risk globally.

### Regional Disparities and Impact

The problem is most severe in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare systems tend to be weaker. Dr. Yvan Hutin, director of the WHO’s Department of Antimicrobial Resistance, described the findings as “deeply concerning,” emphasizing that “we are running out of treatment options and we are putting lives at risk.”

In particular, antibiotic resistance was found in:

– One in three bacterial infections in Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean regions.
– One in five bacterial infections in Africa.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria evolve to withstand drugs designed to kill them, making infections harder to treat.

### The Growing Toll of Drug-Resistant Infections

In 2021 alone, bacterial infections caused 7.7 million deaths worldwide. Of these, 4.71 million were linked to drug resistance, and 1.14 million were directly attributable to antibiotic-resistant infections.

### Treatment Challenges: The Threat of Gram-Negative Bacteria

The WHO report highlights particular concern about gram-negative bacteria such as *Escherichia coli* and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, which are commonly responsible for severe infections leading to sepsis, organ failure, and death.

Dr. Hutin noted that 40% of *E. coli* and more than 55% of *K. pneumoniae* strains are now resistant to third-generation cephalosporins—the preferred first-line treatment for these infections. In the African region, resistance in these bacteria often exceeds 70%, posing significant treatment challenges.

### Urgent Calls for Action

Experts warn that if unchecked, antimicrobial resistance could reach a critical tipping point. Dr. Manica Balasegaram from the Global Antibiotic Research and Development Partnership projects that deaths caused by drug-resistant infections could rise sharply by 70% by 2050.

To combat this growing threat, Professor Sanjib Bhakta of University College London advocates for tailored global action, which includes:

– Strengthening surveillance of antibiotic resistance.
– Ensuring equitable access to narrow-spectrum antibiotics.
– Investing in research to develop novel therapies against drug-resistant bacteria.

The WHO’s alarming report underscores the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to address antibiotic resistance and safeguard the future of effective infection treatment worldwide.
