Power restored to 800,000 in Kyiv after major Russian strikes in Ukraine

Russian drone and missile strikes wounded at least 20 people in Kyiv early Friday. The attacks damaged residential buildings and triggered blackouts across swaths of Ukraine. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the strikes as “one of the largest concentrated strikes” against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Russia’s Defence Ministry stated on Friday that the strikes targeted energy facilities supplying Ukraine’s military. Although it did not provide specific details about the facilities, it confirmed that Russian forces used Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and strike drones in the attacks.

Ukraine’s air force reported on Saturday that its air defenses intercepted or jammed 54 of the 78 Russian drones launched against Ukraine overnight. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed it had shot down 42 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory.

At least two people were killed and five others wounded in airstrikes on Kostiantynivka, a city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, according to regional Governor Vadim Filashkin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday that he had a “very positive and productive” phone call with US President Donald Trump. In a post on X, Zelenskyy shared that he informed Trump about Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, and the two discussed opportunities to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.

“There needs to be readiness on the Russian side to engage in real diplomacy. This can be achieved through strength,” Zelenskyy wrote.

Ukraine’s energy sector has been a key battleground since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. Each year, Russia has attempted to cripple the Ukrainian power grid before the onset of the bitter winter season, seemingly aiming to erode public morale. Winter temperatures in Ukraine run from late October through March, with January and February being the coldest months.

In his nightly address on Friday, Zelenskyy said Russia was taking advantage of the world’s attention being “almost entirely focused on the prospect of establishing peace in the Middle East.” He called for strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems and implementing tighter sanctions on Russia.

“Russian assets must be fully used to strengthen our defense and ensure recovery,” he stated in a video posted to X.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement on Friday expressing readiness to use “in a coordinated way, the value of the immobilized Russian sovereign assets to support Ukraine’s armed forces and thus bring Russia to the negotiation table.”

The statement added that they aimed to undertake this “in close cooperation with the United States.”

Ukraine’s budget and military needs for 2026 and 2027 are estimated to total around 130 billion euros (USD 153 billion). Since the war started in February 2022, the European Union has already contributed 174 billion euros (about USD 202 billion).

The largest pool of available funds lies in frozen Russian assets, most of which are held in Belgium—around 194 billion euros (USD 225 billion) as of June—and outside the EU in Japan, with around USD 50 billion. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada also hold lesser amounts.

Claude’s technical usage in India higher than rest of world

**Claude’s Technical Usage in India Significantly Higher Than Rest of the World**

*By Dwaipayan Roy | October 11, 2025, 05:29 PM*

Guillaume Princen, Global Head of Start-ups and Head of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) at Anthropic, has revealed that half of the usage of their AI tool, Claude, in India is dedicated to technical purposes. These tasks include user interface (UI) design, code debugging, and software development. This is notably higher than the global average, where only 30% of Claude’s usage involves such technical applications.

**India: Anthropic’s Second Largest Market**

India, home to the world’s fourth-largest developer community, is Anthropic’s second largest market after the United States. Princen shared that around 33% of all Claude conversations globally take place in India, underscoring the scale and reach of Anthropic’s services in the country.

**Expansion Plans: New Office in Bengaluru**

To further strengthen its presence in India, Anthropic plans to open an office in Bengaluru by the first quarter of 2026. The new office will enable the company to launch key offerings more quickly and effectively in one of its largest markets.

Princen emphasized the importance of a local footprint, stating, “You’ll see more of us because we really want to have a local presence.” He added that Anthropic aims to be closer to its users and will build teams across the board to provide enhanced community support.

With these strategic moves, Anthropic is positioning itself to better serve the rapidly growing Indian tech ecosystem and capitalize on the high demand for AI-driven technical solutions.

Why EVs and semiconductor components are about to become costlier

**Why EVs and Semiconductor Components Are About to Become Costlier**
*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 11, 2025*

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has issued a warning that the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China is poised to drive up prices for electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines, and semiconductor components. This caution comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a new 100% tariff on Chinese imports, set to take effect on November 1, 2025. The move is a response to China’s recent export controls on rare earth minerals—critical to the US defense, EV, and clean energy sectors.

### Trade Implications: Tariffs to Reach 130%

With the introduction of this new tariff, the total tariff rate on Chinese goods will soar to approximately 130%. This marks the most significant escalation in US-China trade tensions since the initial tariff war began. According to the GTRI report, “The impact will be felt quickly. Prices of EVs, wind turbines, and semiconductor parts are expected to rise.”

Furthermore, the report highlights that China may pivot its supply chains to favor its non-Western partners, thereby strengthening alternative industrial networks outside of Western influence.

### Strategic Negotiations: US Reliance on China

The GTRI report draws attention to the strategic importance of rare earth minerals to US industries. It suggests that Washington may soon have little choice but to engage in fresh negotiations with Beijing. Unlike the often impulsive US approach, China appears more deliberate and better prepared in its trade strategy.

The report underscores America’s heavy dependence on China not only for critical electronics but also for textiles, footwear, white goods, and solar panels. This dependency leaves the US vulnerable to retaliatory measures from China.

### Economic Impact: Potential Backfire of Tariff Strategy

As tariffs push prices higher, President Trump may face challenges in controlling inflation and managing production costs domestically. The GTRI warns that his tough stance on China risks backfiring, potentially harming US consumers and undermining his broader economic agenda.

### Trade Advice: India’s Strategic Approach

The GTRI report also offers guidance for India, urging the country to negotiate with the US carefully and on equal terms to ensure reciprocity while preserving its strategic autonomy. Rather than depending on uncertain US promises, New Delhi is advised to prioritize building self-reliance in critical technologies and minerals.

This strategy could insulate India’s economy from future trade shocks and leverage its neutral position to strengthen relationships with both Western nations and BRICS economies.

*As the trade landscape evolves, stakeholders across industries must prepare for the economic ripples these tariffs will create, especially in sectors reliant on global supply chains such as EVs and semiconductors.*

Pakistan: 11 killed in clashes between police, TLP protesters

**Pakistan: 11 Killed in Clashes Between Police and TLP Protesters**

*By Snehil Singh | October 11, 2025, 05:04 PM*

Violent clashes erupted in Lahore on Saturday between police forces and protesters from the hardline Islamist group Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). The unrest began when authorities attempted to stop TLP demonstrators from marching toward Islamabad in support of a pro-Palestinian rally.

### Protests Sparked by Gaza Conflict

The protests started on Thursday in response to Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and escalated with what TLP termed the “Gaza March.” Thousands of protesters marched from Multan Road in Lahore toward Islamabad, chanting religious slogans and carrying sticks and rods.

### Escalation and Casualties

TLP, led by chief Saad Rizvi, accused Punjab police of firing “indiscriminately,” resulting in the deaths of 11 protesters and injuring over 50 others. These casualty figures have not been independently verified by police authorities.

### Police Tactics to Control Protesters

In an effort to control the demonstrations, the police used tear gas and set up barricades at key intersections including Yateem Khana Chowk, Chauburji, Azadi Chowk, and Shahdara. Despite these measures, protesters breached several barriers and continued their advance.

Videos circulating on social media showed TLP activists occupying portions of the Orange Line Metro track and hurling stones at police officers. Clashes intensified particularly near Lahore’s Azadi Chowk, where several police vehicles were set on fire.

### Statements from Protest Leaders

A TLP leader’s viral video claimed, “11 TLP people have been killed since the morning. Continuous shelling and firing is happening,” highlighting the scale of the violent confrontations.

### Context Amid International Developments

These clashes come at a significant moment as Israel and Hamas have agreed to a Gaza peace deal, mediated by US President Donald Trump.

### Government Response

Pakistan’s Minister of State for Interior, Talal Chaudhry, condemned TLP for “misusing” the Gaza issue for “political gain.” He warned that the government would not tolerate violence or blackmail from any group.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has placed 110 TLP activists in police custody on charges including attacking officers and damaging public property.

The situation remains tense as authorities and protesters remain at odds over the handling of the demonstrations. Further developments are awaited.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is now a Donald Trump supporter

**Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff Now a Supporter of Donald Trump**

*By Dwaipayan Roy | Oct 11, 2025, 2:26 PM*

Marc Benioff, the billionaire CEO of Salesforce, has surprised many with a dramatic shift in his political stance. In a recent interview with *The New York Times*, Benioff expressed his full support for President Donald Trump and suggested that National Guard troops should patrol the streets of San Francisco. This new position marks a sharp departure from his previous liberal-leaning views and philanthropic efforts in the city.

**Unexpected Support**

During the interview, Benioff openly praised Elon Musk for his efforts to enhance government efficiency. He also recounted a moment from a Windsor Castle state dinner where he told President Trump, “how grateful I am for everything he’s doing.” Interestingly, Benioff admitted that he had not been closely following news about immigration raids or Trump’s media controversies.

**A Reflection of a Broader Trend**

Benioff’s political transformation aligns with a growing trend in Silicon Valley toward accepting Trump. However, the interview also highlighted potential tensions within his inner circle. When his public relations executive reacted to the political questions, Benioff noticed and asked, “What about the political questions? Too spicy?” This exchange suggests that not everyone around him shares his new political views.

Marc Benioff’s shift marks a significant moment in tech and political circles, signaling evolving attitudes that could have broader implications for the industry and its relationship with government policies.
