Jack Smith And Allies Are Making New Moves As Republicans Mount Pressure

Former special counsel Jack Smith and his allies are leveraging their experience prosecuting President Donald Trump to criticize his administration and launch new legal campaigns.

Two top prosecutors for former special counsel Jack Smith, Molly Gaston and J. P. Cooney, have launched their own law firm, Gaston & Cooney. According to their website, the firm will focus on helping state and local governments enforce “public corruption” laws, criminal defense, and supporting clients subject to congressional investigations.

Gaston and Cooney worked on Smith’s election interference case against Trump, which was dropped when Trump won the 2024 election. They were subsequently fired from the Department of Justice amid suggestions that they should face disbarment.

Meanwhile, Smith himself is already facing an ethics investigation by the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), an independent federal investigative and prosecutorial agency. Trump’s nominee to lead OSC, Paul Ingrassia, withdrew from consideration on Tuesday after failing to secure “enough Republican votes.” This occurred in the wake of leaked messages published by Politico.

‘Under siege’: Inside Trump’s comprehensive plan to steal 2026 midterms

Both times he was inaugurated—January 20, 2017, and January 20, 2025—President Donald Trump entered the White House with Republican majorities in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. However, Democratic strategists are hopeful that the 2026 midterms will play out similarly to the 2018 midterms, which saw Democrats flipping the House with a net gain of 40 seats.

Some Democrats have argued that the 2018 “blue wave” in Congress’ lower chamber could have been even larger if House districts had not been so heavily gerrymandered. It remains to be seen what will happen in 2026, but Trump is clearly hoping that next year’s midterms won’t be a repeat of 2018.

In an op-ed published by MSNBC on October 23, Symone D. Sanders Townsend—who co-hosts MSNBC’s *The Weeknight* with Alicia Menendez—alongside former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele, argues that although Trump faces some major disadvantages going into the 2026 midterms, he has devised a comprehensive game plan to try to steal the election.

Townsend warns, “As part of a broad, multi-state effort by allies of President Donald Trump, Republicans in North Carolina have taken the dramatic step to try to redraw their already gerrymandered congressional districts five years before the normal end-of-decade cycle. The goal is to secure one more Republican U.S. House seat in a desperate attempt to hang onto the House majority and protect Trump from political consequences. Keep in mind, this map was already unfairly drawn up.”

She continues, “The Princeton Gerrymandering Project gave it an ‘F,’ with only one competitive district, ten safe Republican seats, and three safe Democratic seats. The new map would be even worse.”

This pattern is happening across the country. From Texas—where lawmakers passed a new map reportedly at Trump’s behest—to Missouri, where organizers are attempting to put an initiative on the ballot to overturn a recent gerrymander, to Indiana, where party leaders recently admitted they may not have the votes to push through a new map.

Townsend emphasizes that Republicans “wouldn’t be trying this if they were confident they could win in 2026. But rather than trying to persuade the American people that they have better ideas, they are trying to rig it so that they can win anyway.”

She warns that the representative ideal is under siege—but not defeated. “The people still hold the power. They always have. And the fight now is to make sure they can still exercise it freely.”

As Republicans attempt to redraw the lines of power, Townsend urges us to “listen for the echoes of our ancestors. Times have changed, but the struggle has not.”

Critics of $1 trillion payday for Elon Musk are ‘corporate terrorists,’ Tesla CEO says

**Who Wants to Be a Trillionaire? Elon Musk Does**

Elon Musk is aiming for a staggering $1 trillion pay package, and he doesn’t hold back against those opposing his quest. During the latest Tesla earnings call, Musk interrupted the proceedings to push for approval of his 10-figure salary plan, characterizing the advice from advisory firms opposing the move as “asinine.”

The proposed mammoth pay package would significantly increase Musk’s stake in Tesla—from 13% to as much as 29%—if he hits several ambitious performance benchmarks. Musk emphasized the need for enough voting control to maintain strong influence over the company, but not so much that he couldn’t be removed if necessary. “There needs to be enough voting control to give a strong influence, but not so much that I can’t be fired if I go insane,” Musk said near the end of the hour-long call on Wednesday, even cutting off his chief financial officer to make his point, according to a Bloomberg report.

He didn’t mince words when describing proxy advisers Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) and Glass Lewis, who have urged shareholders to reject the $1 trillion pay package, labeling them “corporate terrorists.” Musk added, “I just don’t feel comfortable building a robot army here, and then being ousted because of some asinine recommendations from ISS and Glass Lewis, who have no freaking clue.”

ISS expressed “unmitigated concerns” about potential future adjustments to the pay levels, while Glass Lewis highlighted worries that the plan could dilute the stakes of other shareholders in the company.

As the world’s richest person, with a net worth of $487.5 billion according to Forbes, Musk has argued that the most critical component of the plan is his gain in voting control. After Musk finished, Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja praised the special board committee for their “amazing job” in crafting the plan. “There’s nothing which gets passed on until the time shareholders make substantial returns,” Taneja noted.

**Tesla’s Disappointing Earnings and Lofty Milestones**

Musk’s fiery comments capped a tense end to a disappointing earnings call, where Tesla missed profit estimates despite delivering record sales. The proposed 10-year compensation plan ties Musk’s payout to several ambitious milestones, including:

– Selling 20 million vehicles
– Delivering 1 million humanoid robots
– Increasing Tesla’s market value more than eightfold, to an eye-popping $8.5 trillion

According to a proxy filing obtained by Bloomberg last month, Musk warned Tesla’s board that he would abandon the electric vehicle maker to “pursue his other interests” unless he secured approximately 25% voting control and was “fully paid for his past services.”

Shareholders are scheduled to vote on Musk’s pay package during Tesla’s annual meeting in Austin on November 6.

Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives expressed confidence in the package’s approval despite some opposition, stating in a Wednesday night note that he believes it “will be approved by a wide margin” as the automaker aims to keep Musk “as a war-time CEO.”

**Financial Highlights and Market Reaction**

Adding to the tension, Tesla reported that its operating income plunged 40% in the third quarter, while revealing over $400 million in tariff-related costs. Operating expenses surged 50%, reaching $3.4 billion.

Tesla’s shares fell 3.8% on Thursday morning, though the stock remains up 11.1% year-to-date.

Elon Musk’s pursuit of a trillion-dollar pay package reflects both his ambition and the high stakes involved as Tesla continues to navigate a complex and competitive market. The upcoming shareholder vote will be critical in determining the company’s leadership and future direction.

While one Eagles WR sends cryptic messages, DeVonta Smith just catches the football – at a higher rate than usual

“I don’t think it’s something that maybe is voiced enough, but everybody sees it,” Hurts said Wednesday at his press conference at the NovaCare Complex. “Everybody feels it. It definitely oozes through the team. He’s been that size his whole entire career, his whole life.”

But Hurts doesn’t wonder about it like he once did. He gave that up a long time ago.

“I remember times asking him, ‘Hey, how much you weigh? You gaining weight?’” Hurts recalled. “I stopped asking him that as the years have gone on because that’s no indication of what type of player he is. He’s a hell of a player, and he’s been making some big-time plays.”

The Eagles’ pass offense has struggled for most of the season—enough that the team’s other star receiver, A.J. Brown, has once again expressed his dissatisfaction. It’s been enough for Hurts, Brown, and Saquon Barkley to hold a gathering after a Thursday night loss to the Giants this month. Even after Sunday’s breakout performance against the Vikings, Brown still went to social media to send a cryptic message about his usage despite his 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Ironically, Smith is in the middle of his best season yet, with his per-game average in almost every category surpassing his career averages. Smith is on pace for close to 1,300 yards, which would be the most of his career.

The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner ranks ninth in the NFL in receiving yards and 11th in receptions, despite sharing targets with Brown and tight end Dallas Goedert.

Advanced analytics show that Smith is among the NFL’s most productive receivers, even though the Eagles have the league’s seventh-fewest pass attempts. Smith’s receiving EPA (+37.5) is fourth in the NFL, and his catch rate over expectation (+18.9) is third.

“He’s a dynamic player, right?” offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said Tuesday in his press conference. “He’s a Heisman Trophy winner. He is one of the best players in the league still, obviously. We’re going to use him in any capacity we can, and his energy is just infectious at all times.”

For sure, Smith is the team’s spark plug. He broke open Sunday’s win over the Vikings with a 79-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter on a Hurts play-action pass from under center. Smith had told the coaches prior to the play that it was there for the taking.

“Smitty does a great job of communicating what he’s seeing out there,” head coach Nick Sirianni said Monday. “He’s got great football instincts and football IQ, so he gives you that confidence to be able to call things in those scenarios when he sees something. It’s just like having another set of eyes from coaches out there on the field.”

The touchdown put the Eagles up 12 points, but the Vikings didn’t go away. It took several more big conversions from both Smith and Brown to stave off Carson Wentz’s attempted comeback.

The Eagles led only 21-16 when Smith came up with a 19-yard catch that not only moved the chains into Vikings territory but also demonstrated his unique ability to take crushing hits, land hard, and still hang onto the ball.

On another under-center play action, Hurts delivered a strike to Smith at the left seam on a deep over route. Smith had to extend both arms up as veteran Vikings safety Harrison Smith rotated over.

Harrison Smith drilled DeVonta Smith in the chest as he reached for the ball, causing the receiver to land awkwardly on his right leg while his left leg was still airborne, then crash down on his rear end as his body rolled on the turf. And then Smith just popped right back up.

“DeVonta is so tough, and he knows that,” Sirianni said after the game. “We talk a lot about—and I know he talked a lot about this in college—about finishing runs and finding ways to get ugly yards after the catch. He’s going to go look for those ugly runs and extra yards because of just his makeup, who he is, and the toughness that he has.

“I remember the Super Bowl in ’22, our first third down, he catches a little shallow route and [then-Chiefs safety Justin] Reed comes over and just smokes him on the sideline and he hit him good. I don’t know if you remember, his feet were up over his head and Smitty just gets up fast. I think about that. There was also the game in ’22 against the Cardinals where someone came over and just drilled him on a wide receiver screen and he pops up.”

These are both gifts and curses, Sirianni explained.

“Sometimes you don’t want him to take those hits, there’s a time to go out of bounds, but he is always looking for the grimy, gritty yards,” Sirianni said. “You try to show your physicality and your toughness many different ways, and I think there brings a lot of energy to guys when you see Smitty lower his shoulder and get those extra yards.”

Tearful Kim Kardashian Shares Doctors Found Brain Aneurysm

The Total Bellas alum revealed that one of her breast implants shifted after an elbow slam from fellow WWE star Piper Niven during a July 2025 wrestling match.

“It’s OK,” she told sister Bella Garcia at the time. “We’re going to get it fixed one day. I told the doctor, I go, ‘Newly divorced, so the minute the boots are hung up, I’m going to come back to you and we’re going to make these girls look real good, because these girls are going to get some action in the future and that can’t look like that.'”

The 12 Years a Slave star was diagnosed with uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus—in 2014, the same year she won an Oscar for her performance in the movie. However, it wasn’t until 2025 when she disclosed her diagnosis, writing on Instagram that she had been “suffering in silence” for more than a decade.

“When we reach puberty, we’re taught periods mean pain, and that pain is simply part of being a woman,” she shared. “We’re struggling alone with something that affects us most.”

In July 2025, the Daisy Jones & The Six star shared that she had been hospitalized due to a hernia—a gap in the muscular wall that’s commonly found in the abdomen or groin area—caused by wearing tight pants.

“‘Suki you never tweet anymore,'” she wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Have you ever considered I wore pants so tight 6 months ago it caused a hernia & I’ve been too scared to tell you?”

The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum revealed in April 2025 that he was recovering from surgery after his appendix nearly burst.

“Last week, I started feeling some pain in my stomach,” Brian said in an Instagram video at the time. “I ended up going to the emergency room, and I had a perforated appendix. Not quite burst, but just before.”

He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

The Racing Louisville midfielder collapsed just a few minutes into her soccer team’s Sept. 14 match against Seattle Reign at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The United States Women’s National Team player could be seen slowly sitting down on the field with a teammate by her side, per Reuters, as the referee called for trainers to check her out. She collapsed seconds later.

“Savannah received immediate on-field care from medical personnel and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation,” the National Women’s Soccer League wrote on X later that night. “She is stable and alert.”

Adam Devine shared that injuries he sustained after getting hit by a cement truck when he was 11 years old are still affecting him to this day.

“It’s been a nightmare,” Devine said in a 2025 episode of the *In Depth With Graham Bensinger* podcast. “I have spasms all over. For a while, [the doctors] told me I was dying—literally, within this last year.”

He noted that pain comes and goes, adding, “My body has all these things that are a little wonky and a little wrong with it.”

The Bachelor Nation alum shared that he went to the hospital “crawling on all fours” due to overwhelming back pain that was aggravated during an RV trip with a friend.

“Right now, knees to my toes, it’s, like, still tingly, which is crazy,” he said on a March 2025 episode of his *Trading Secrets* podcast.

“To put in perspective, I don’t know, man, like not to sound douchey, but like two, three weeks ago, maybe a month ago, I was squatting probably like 295 pounds. And right now, I can’t do a squat on my foot. I can’t do a one-legged squat, I fall. It’s like I had a stroke or something.”

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

The *Even Stevens* alum shared in February 2025 that she was shot in the face while on a trip to shoot clay pigeons to celebrate husband Brendan Rooney’s birthday.

“There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face,” she wrote on Instagram. “@thebrendanrooney immediately sprung into action, assessed me, and rushed me to the hospital. I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye.”

The *Kim Possible* alum continued, “Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me.”

She explained the blood clot had traveled into her heart, “escaped” through the hole, and went to her brain, leading to the TIA.

Hailey said she had a successful PFO closure procedure and was now feeling great.

The same year Hailey had her health scare, Justin experienced one of his own.

In June 2022, the “Baby” singer shared he was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that caused temporary paralysis to parts of his face and forced him to cancel the remainder of his Justice World Tour.

“It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis,” Justin explained in an Instagram video at the time.

“As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move. So, there’s full paralysis on this side of my face.”

In fact, he told his followers it had gotten “progressively harder to eat.” But after a while, the paralysis went away.

“He’s doing really well,” Hailey said on a June 2022 episode of *Good Morning America,* later adding, “He’s feeling a lot better. Obviously, it was just a very scary and random situation to happen, but he’s going to be totally OK and I’m just grateful that he’s fine.”

While Jamie Foxx initially kept details of his April 2023 hospitalization private, he later opened up about what he went through.

One day in Atlanta, “I was having such a bad headache, so I asked my boy, I said, ‘Listen, I need an aspirin,’” the Oscar winner said in his 2024 Netflix special *What Had Happened Was.*

“Before I could get the Aspirin, I went out. I don’t remember 20 days.”

Jamie said he was initially taken to a doctor who gave him a cortisone shot and then sent him home. However, his concerned sister Deidra Dixon then drove him to a hospital, where they got an answer: He had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

Twenty days after undergoing an operation, the *Django Unchained* star woke up May 4 in a wheelchair and couldn’t walk. He then went to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy.

“All I can tell you is that I appreciate every prayer,” he said, “because I needed every prayer.”

The reality star revealed that she “died” while running a mile during the first challenge of the NBC competition series.

“I don’t remember a lot,” she explained on *Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser.*

“I remember hearing the helicopter. I just felt like I was floating. And then my grandpa was there. And then I saw darkness. But then I saw light. So I knew, I knew I died that day.”

“My organs were literally shutting down,” she continued. “I didn’t realize that I had rhabdomyolysis. And rhabdomyolysis is your body’s way of saying, ‘I’m going to shut down on you.’”

Emilia Clarke filmed battle scenes for *Game of Thrones,* but in 2019, she published an essay in *The New Yorker* titled “A Battle for My Life.”

Having a bad headache at the gym, “I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill,” the actress wrote. “Meanwhile, the pain—shooting, stabbing, constricting pain—was getting worse. At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged.”

She was taken to the hospital for a brain scan. “The diagnosis was quick and ominous: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain,” the Emmy nominee added. “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture.”

Emilia had immediate surgery to seal the aneurysm, calling the pain “unbearable.” While she was recovering, she continued, she experienced aphasia and was “muttering nonsense.” A week later, “the aphasia passed,” Emilia added, and she left the hospital a month after being admitted.

At a 2013 brain scan, she learned a growth “doubled in size” and that she needed surgery again.

“When they woke me, I was screaming in pain,” she wrote. “The procedure had failed. I had a massive bleed and the doctors made it plain that my chances of surviving were precarious if they didn’t operate again. This time they needed to access my brain in the old-fashioned way—through my skull.”

Thankfully, Emilia shared, she’s now “at a hundred per cent.”

Snoop Dogg’s daughter Cori Broadus is grateful for her family. After she suffered a “severe stroke” in January 2024, her loved ones rushed to be by her side.

“I texted them that I just had a stroke and sent them a picture,” she told *E! News* correspondent Will Marfuggi in December 2024. “Everybody just came to my rescue.”

Because of other medical concerns, Cori ended up staying in the hospital longer than she initially expected.

“I could have went home after my stroke, but my lupus wasn’t doing so well,” the *Snoop’s Fatherhood: Cori and Wayne’s Story* star continued. “My kidneys were failing. It was a lot going on.”

Today, Cori is on the mend.

“I’m doing great,” she added. “I just had a little bit of motor skills that I had to work back on. But other than that, I was fine.”

Shailene Woodley’s early 20s were not an easy time health-wise.

“It got to the point where I was losing my hearing. I couldn’t walk for longer than five minutes at a time without having to lay down for hours, and hours and sleep. Everything I ate hurt my stomach,” the actress said on a September 2024 episode of the *SHE MD Podcast.*

“It was this conflation of issues and diagnoses and different doctors telling me different things.”

So Shailene—who chose to keep the exact condition private—set out to find answers.

“I come from a very holistic background and study herbalism,” she added. “So I was very keen on, ‘I’m going to work with real MDs, [and] I’m also going to work with independent kind of healers.’ Just trying to search for some sense of comfort in my own skin.”

It was a long journey—one that lasted for 10 years.

“Throughout that decade, a lot of other things came from feeling so much discomfort physically,” the *Big Little Lies* star noted, “which was, ‘My gosh, if everything I eat hurts my stomach, I’m now suddenly afraid of food.’ And then going into the kind of mental f–ckery that can happen with that of body dysmorphia and confusion about identity and feeling safe in my own capsule, in my own skin, what that meant, and what that should be.”

After tending to both her physical and mental health, Shailene is feeling much better.

“It was a journey that ultimately physically resolved itself, and I am very healthy,” she shared. “I’m so happy to be able to say that.”

Public Schoolteacher Faces DOJ Probe Over ‘Unhinged’ Threat Toward ICE

The Department of Homeland Security history teacher Ron Gochez stated during a Tuesday press conference denouncing ICE raids that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “are not the only ones with guns” and that “people have every right to defend themselves” against them.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin responded to Gochez’s comments, telling the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) that such remarks endanger agents’ lives and “look criminal.”

“Calling for violence against law enforcement is un-American and beneath the conduct of someone teaching the next generation of Americans,” McLaughlin said. She added that the DHS will refer Gochez to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

“Our law enforcement officers are already facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them including terrorist attacks, cars being used as weapons, and rocks thrown at them,” McLaughlin continued. “Words have consequences and this type of rhetoric is going to get one of our officers killed.”

Neither LAUSD, Gochez, nor the DOJ responded to DCNF’s requests for comment.

Gochez led the press conference on behalf of activist group Unión del Barrio (UDB), which also did not respond to a request for comment.

In his remarks, Gochez maintained that he was not “calling for violence” by suggesting that anti-ICE agitators carry guns, though he praised rioters who threw bricks at federal agents.

“This is South Central Los Angeles. They are not the only ones with guns in this city. They’re not the only ones and don’t forget that,” Gochez told his audience.

“And I don’t say that because we’re calling for violence, I’m saying that because the people have every right to defend themselves against masked, unidentified gunmen with AR-15s and other military rifles.”

“The people have every right to defend themselves,” he continued. “That’s not violent, that’s intelligent.”

Gochez also boasted that rioters had effectively reduced ICE raids in California, mentioning those who threw hard objects at federal agents in Paramount after mass protests began in June.

“They caught some bricks. Y’all remember Paramount? They caught those bricks,” Gochez said. “This is Los Angeles and this is South Central. The people will fight back.”

Earlier this year, UDB received a letter from Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism Chair Josh Hawley of Missouri announcing an investigation into the group’s possible ties to California’s anti-ICE riots.

In response, UDB stated that it “has not organized, aided, abetted, financed, or engaged in any illegal activity.”

The DCNF previously reported that Gochez was seen telling an audience at a UDB-led press conference to resist ICE “by any means necessary” just one day after riots broke out.
