Court remands 2 more accused in Durgapur `gangrape` case to nine day custody

A local court in West Bengal on Monday remanded two men to police custody for nine days in connection with the alleged gangrape of a medical student in Paschim Bardhaman district. Earlier, three other accused were remanded to 10-day police custody on Sunday.

The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) in Durgapur ordered the nine-day custody for the two men following a request from the prosecution. The prosecution alleged their direct involvement in the case alongside the previously arrested three accused and sought custody for questioning and further investigation.

The medical student, who hails from Odisha, was allegedly gangraped outside the campus of a private medical college in Durgapur on Friday night. The incident occurred when she had gone out for dinner with a friend.

Her parents subsequently lodged an FIR with the New Township police station.

All five accused are scheduled to be produced before the court on the next hearing date.

AI reveals Martian winds can reach speeds of up to 160 kmph

Winds and swirling dust devils on Mars can reach speeds of up to 160 km/h, much faster than scientists once believed.

An international research team, led by the University of Bern, Switzerland, used advanced machine learning techniques to analyze images captured by the Bernese Mars camera CaSSIS and the HRSC stereo camera. Their findings provide valuable data that will help researchers better understand how the Martian atmosphere works.

Even though Mars has an extremely thin atmosphere, it still experiences winds that play a key role in shaping its climate and moving dust around the planet. While winds themselves cannot be seen in images, dust devils stand out clearly.

Afghanistan says it has killed 58 Pak soldiers as Pakistan claims to kill 200 Afghan militants

**KABUL:** Afghanistan announced on Sunday that it killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in overnight border operations, responding to what it described as repeated violations of its territory and airspace.

Earlier in the week, Afghan authorities accused Pakistan of bombing the capital city, Kabul, as well as a market in the country’s east. Pakistan, however, did not claim responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban government’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, stated that Afghan forces have captured 25 Pakistani army posts. According to him, 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 30 others wounded during the clashes.

“The situation on all official borders and de facto lines of Afghanistan is under complete control, and illegal activities have been largely prevented,” Mujahid said at a press conference in Kabul.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s military reported on Sunday that 23 of its troops and more than 200 Taliban and affiliated fighters on the Afghan side were killed during overnight border clashes.

“Precision fire and strikes, as well as physical raids, were directed against Taliban camps and posts, as well as terrorist training facilities,” the Pakistani military said in a statement. The statement noted that 23 Pakistani troops were killed and 29 wounded, while “more than 200 Taliban and affiliated terrorists have been neutralized.”

Pakistan has previously conducted strikes inside Afghanistan, targeting what it alleges are militant hideouts, but these strikes were typically carried out in remote mountainous areas. Nevertheless, the two sides have experienced frequent skirmishes along the border.

Saturday night’s heavy clashes underscore the rising security tensions between the two countries.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government Defense Ministry said early Sunday morning that its forces had conducted “retaliatory and successful operations” along the border. The ministry added, “If the opposing side again violates Afghanistan’s territorial integrity, our armed forces are fully prepared to defend the nation’s borders and will deliver a strong response.”

The Torkham border crossing, one of the two main trade routes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, did not open at its usual time of 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Chaman crossing was also closed.

Pakistan accuses Afghan authorities of harboring members of the banned group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad claims that the group carries out deadly attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul denies these charges, insisting it does not allow its territory to be used against other countries.

Before Afghanistan’s claim of casualties, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the assault. He stated that the Pakistani army “not only gave a befitting reply to Afghanistan’s provocations but also destroyed several of their posts, forcing them to retreat.”

The Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Saturday, calling for “restraint, avoidance of escalation and the adoption of dialogue and wisdom to help de-escalate tensions and maintain the security and stability of the region.” Saudi Arabia recently reached a mutual defense pact with Pakistan, which reportedly places the kingdom under Islamabad’s nuclear umbrella following Israel’s attack on Qatar.

A senior Pakistani security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Afghan forces opened fire in several northwestern border areas within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, including the districts of Chitral, Bajaur, Mohmand, Angoor Adda, and Kurram.

The official further noted that Pakistani troops responded with heavy weaponry near Tirah in the Khyber district and across the frontier in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.

The two countries share a 2,611-kilometer border known as the Durand Line, which Afghanistan has never officially recognized.

Benjamin Netanyahu threatens to break the peace deal in Gaza

Tens of thousands of Palestinians headed back to the heavily destroyed northern Gaza Strip on Friday as a US-brokered ceasefire came into effect. The deal has raised hopes for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.

All the remaining hostages are set to be released within days. However, questions remain about who will govern Gaza as Israeli troops gradually pull back, and whether Hamas will disarm, as called for in US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who unilaterally ended a ceasefire in March, hinted that Israel might renew its offensive if Hamas does not give up its weapons.

The latest truce, nevertheless, marks a key step toward ending a ruinous two-year war that was triggered by Hamas’ 2023 attack on Israel. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced around 90 percent of the Gaza population of approximately 2 million people, often multiple times.

In a televised statement on Friday, Netanyahu said the next stages would see Hamas disarm and Gaza demilitarized. “If this is achieved the easy way, so be it. If not, it will be achieved the hard way. Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarized,” he said.

The Israeli military has stated it will continue to operate defensively from the roughly 50 percent of Gaza it still controls after pulling back to agreed-upon lines.

Hairstylist Jawed Habib, his son booked in Rs 7 crore fraud case

Hairstylist Jawed Habib and his son Anos Habib have been booked in 23 fraud cases for allegedly swindling Rs 7 crore from people through an investment scheme, police said on Wednesday.

Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Vishnoi revealed that the two operated a scheme under the banner of FLC Company, promising investors annual returns of 50-70 percent on Bitcoin purchases. They collected around Rs 5-7 lakh from each investor, claiming these investments would yield high returns.

However, even after two and a half years, none of the investors have received their money back, Vishnoi added. Investigators have so far identified 38 people who were defrauded through this scheme.

To date, 23 FIRs have been filed against Jawed Habib, his son Anos Habib, and their associate Saiful. The scam appears to have been run like an organized gang, according to police officials.

Authorities have also issued a lookout notice against the duo as the investigation continues.

AstraZeneca gets nod to market cancer drug in India

AstraZeneca Pharma announced on Tuesday that it has received approval from the national drug regulator to market a new cancer treatment drug in India.

The company has been granted approval by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) to import, market, and distribute Trastuzumab Deruxtecan for an additional indication in the country, according to an official statement.

With this approval, Trastuzumab Deruxtecan is now indicated for the treatment of adult patients with unresectable or metastatic HER2-positive solid tumours. These patients must have received prior systemic therapy and have no satisfactory alternative treatment options.

This approval marks the first and only antibody-drug conjugate in India with a tumour-agnostic indication, representing a significant advancement in precision oncology, AstraZeneca said.

Taiwan detects presence of 9 Chinese sorties, 6 PLAN vessels around strait

The Ministry of National Defense (MND) of Taiwan reported on ‘X’ that 9 sorties of PLA aircraft and 6 PLAN vessels were detected operating around Taiwan up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. Out of these 9 sorties, 2 crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The ROC Armed Forces have been actively monitoring the situation and have responded accordingly.

Earlier on Saturday, Taiwan recorded similar activity, with 10 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels operating near the island. The MND noted that 5 out of those 10 aircraft sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern ADIZ. The official ‘X’ post stated: “10 PLA aircraft and 7 PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 5 out of 10 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s northern ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded accordingly.”

This recent surge in military activity comes amid warnings from defense experts regarding China’s newly unveiled weapon systems. These systems are reportedly designed to counter Taiwan’s long-standing asymmetric warfare strategy.

According to the Defence and Security Biweekly published by the Institute for National Defence and Security Research (INDSR), assistant research fellow Sheu Jyh-shyang highlighted that Taiwan has invested heavily for decades in asymmetric warfare. This defense strategy relies on low-cost, highly effective systems intended to deter Beijing from launching a large-scale invasion.

The frequent incursions and maritime operations exemplify rising tensions between Taiwan and China, a relationship long marked by geopolitical strain. Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), governs itself independently with its own distinct political and economic systems. However, China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory under the “One China” principle, insisting there is only one China with its capital in Beijing.

The roots of this dispute trace back to the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, when the ROC government retreated to Taiwan after the Communist Party, led by Mao Zedong, took control of mainland China.

Luxembourg’s crown passes to Guillaume after Henri’s abdication

Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri abdicated his throne on Friday in favour of his son, Guillaume. Henri, 70, served the tiny duchy in the heart of Europe for 25 years in a largely symbolic role.

Guillaume, 43, was crowned in a ceremony before he greeted the public atop a balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace with the royal family at his side. Present were his wife, the Belgian-born Countess Stephanie de Lannoy, and their sons, Charles, 5, and Francois, 2. Royals from the Netherlands and Belgium also attended the event.

Guillaume will be Luxembourg’s seventh Grand Duke since 1890, when the modern monarchy was established.
