Historic Move: Pune Metro Deploys All-Women Drivers On Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi Line, Sets Example Of Women Empowerment

**Pune Metro Line 3 to be Operated Exclusively by Women Drivers**

In an inspiring move towards women’s empowerment, Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) announced on Monday morning that Pune Metro Line 3 trains will be driven exclusively by women. Under a 10-year operations contract awarded to Keolis, all trains on this line will be operated by a team of 100 women metro drivers.

The women drivers have undergone extensive training over three months, preparing them for both day and night shifts. Their training included more than 200 kilometres of supervised driving and comprehensive instruction on safety and well-being, ensuring their long-term integration into the workforce with strong technical expertise.

PITCMRL CEO Anil Kumar highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating,
“This isn’t about running trains but about inspiring the next generation of women to step into roles which were once viewed as conventional by society. Our women training pilots symbolise resilience, discipline, and progress. They are setting a powerful example.”

The women drivers have already demonstrated their skills during successful metro trial runs conducted from Hinjawadi Maan Depot to Balewadi Stadium, covering stations 1 through 10.

**Public Anticipation and the Need for Metro Services**

Residents and commuters eagerly await the launch of Pune Metro Line 3, which is expected to alleviate severe traffic congestion in key areas across Pune District, including Hinjawadi, Baner, Shivajinagar, and Balewadi.

With thousands of people traveling daily to Hinjawadi for work, traffic problems have been escalating due to growing infrastructural demands. The new metro line connecting Maan (Hinjawadi) to Shivajinagar aims to address these issues effectively.

IT employees and local experts have advocated for a phased opening of the Pune Metro to expedite relief, emphasizing the urgent need for this service in the area.

As Pune Metro moves closer to operation, this all-women driver initiative stands out as a beacon of progress while promising a more efficient commute for thousands.

Arrests on first day of transit safety initiative ‘no surprise’: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say their new transit safety initiative has already borne fruit, with arrests occurring as early as Wednesday—the very day the project was announced.

Officers stationed at the Unicity Transit Hub made two separate arrests on launch day. In one incident, a 37-year-old man was apprehended as he attempted to board a bus to flee with goods stolen from a nearby business. The man was charged with theft under $5,000.

“It comes as no surprise to us,” said Supt. Brian Miln. “There’s a direct link to our transit strategy, as some individuals involved in retail crime use transit as a means to leave the area after committing shoplifting and theft inside retail outlets.”

The second incident involved a report from a transit driver who witnessed a man smash a bus window with his elbow. Police patrolling the hub quickly tracked down the 35-year-old suspect, who was charged with mischief under $5,000.

Additionally, police found flammable liquid and a lighter on the man, items he was banned from possessing under the conditions of a release order. He was subsequently charged with failing to comply with those conditions and taken into custody.

Although the transit safety initiative has only been in place for a few days, Miln said public response has been positive so far. “We’ve had a couple of people reach out to us through various means—emails, phone calls, etc.—who are very pleased to see a police presence on buses, saying the initiative is very welcome and overdue.”

The campaign was launched in response to a record high number of violent crimes recorded on transit buses and around bus shelters last year—more than triple the numbers reported in 2019. Authorities say this troubling trend is continuing.

The ramped-up police presence involves both uniformed and plainclothes officers and will focus on routes and stops flagged as problem areas to enhance safety for transit users.

Mumbai News: Mock Train Accident Drill Conducted At Jogeshwari Station With NDRF

A mock drill simulating a train accident was conducted at Jogeshwari (JOS) station on Thursday in collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The drill aimed to test the preparedness and coordination of various emergency response teams in handling railway disasters.

In the simulated scenario, Train number 19003 was shown derailing after colliding with a stationary coach on the NS2 line at Jogeshwari station. The impact caused one of the coaches to mount over the stationary coach, resulting in approximately 10 simulated injuries.

Emergency response teams, including the NDRF, SPART (Self Propelled Accident Relief Train), Civil Defence, and the Railway’s 140-tonne crane unit, swiftly swung into action. Rescue teams demonstrated how they would cut open the damaged coaches to safely evacuate injured passengers and casualties. Meanwhile, the Railway medical team provided immediate first aid and attended to the victims as part of the drill.

The exercise witnessed the active participation of various agencies, including the city police, ambulance services, and other civic authorities. From the Railways, departments such as RPF, Signal & Telecom (S&T), Engineering, Traction Distribution (TRD), Commercial, Mechanical, and Safety played crucial roles.

The entire operation was conducted under the supervision of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Mumbai Division, along with other senior railway officials. The drill provided valuable insights into inter-agency coordination and emergency response times.

Officials emphasized that such mock drills are critical for strengthening disaster management strategies and ensuring the safety of passengers in real-life emergencies.
